It is with great sorrow that we announce the passing of Lois Stuart. Lois passed away peacefully on Oct. 13, at the Bethany Care Centre in Airdrie after a lengthy illness. She leaves to mourn, her son Greg (Bev) of Okotoks; granddaughter Shelley and grandson Bryan. Her husband Harold predeceased Lois in 1981. Lois was a long time resident of Vulcan. She came from Lethbridge where her father was a printer. She moved to Vulcan in the early fifties where she carried on the family tradition at the Vulcan Advocate for many years. Relatives and friends are invited to a Memorial Service at the Champion Cemetery on Oct. 23 at 2 p.m. If friends desire, memorial donations may be made in Lois’s name directly to the Bethany Care Society, Bag Service 3, 136 – 1 Avenue NW Airdrie, Alberta T4B 2C4, attention Recreation Dept.

2004-12-02 - Walter Kushner, of Champion
Walter Kushner, of Champion, Alta. passed away Dec. 2 at the Vulcan Community Health Centre at the age of 80.
Walter was born Oct. 2, 1924 in Yorkton, Sask. to Anthony and Helen Kushner. In 1941 at the age of 17 years he joined the Navy. Following his military service Walter worked as a high rigger for Ontario Hydro, had a mail route, moved to northern Manitoba where he drove a cat train. On May 1, 1955 Walter married Eleanor Bunes at Claresholm. They returned to the family farm where he worked with his father and later farmed his own land, he drove a truck until beginning to work with Westburn Oil Company as a well driller until retiring in 1980 to Champion where he has resided since.
Walter was a very kind, generous and dedicated family man. He liked to read informative books, visit with people and tell his life stories to his grandchildren. Walter enjoyed working on vehicles, swimming, hiking, camping, gardening and yard work, sailing and flying. He was a past member of the Royal Canadian Legion and a member of the Audubon Society.
Beloved husband of wife Eleanor of Champion, loving father of a daughter Marcia (Dave) Hagedorn of Langdon, a son Craig (Deb) of Calgary, seven grandchildren Matthew, Tristan, Brianna, James, Nichole, David and Leah, a great grandson Michael, a brother Michael of Toronto, Ont., two sisters Edna Kazakoff of Prince George, B.C., Alice (Garth) Storey of Grandview, Man., sister-in-law Jerry Kushner and numerous nieces and nephews.
Walter was predeceased by his son Kerry in 1975, four brothers Paul, Frank (Stella), Peter, Orest, a sister Sophie (Wilf) Barschel, a sister-in-law Rose and a brother-in-law Fred Kazakoff.
Funeral service Dec. 8 at 1:30 p.m. at the Champion Congregational Church, Champion with Pastor Wayne Lee and Pastor Bill Roycroft officiating.

2004-12-20 - Alvin Ronald Walker, of Lomond
Alvin Ronald "Ron" Walker of Lomond, Alberta passed away Dec. 20 at the Vulcan Community Health Centre at the age of 69.
Ron was born July 23, 1935 in Champion, Alta. to Fred and Helen Walker. He attended Yetwood, Rosemead and Travers school until 1944 when the family moved to the Bill Newton farm just north of Lomond.
On Oct. 27, 1963 Ron married Delores Ruggles. Together they lived on his father’s land, raising their family, working the land and raising livestock, which was his passion.
In the late 1980s Ron started to get involved with horse racing. He loved to go to the races and was always attending auction sales. It was not very often that Ron would return home from a sale without purchasing some kind of animal. His purchase of animals included thoroughbreds, miniature donkeys and horses, chickens and rabbits. Ron would never allow an animal to starve in the winter as he would even feed the town cats behind the local store, going as far as warming their milk.
Ron continued to live on the family farm until his passing.
Ron enjoyed a variety of sports. During ball season he would always make a point to be home to watch the Cleveland Indians. Ron also enjoyed curling. In his younger years he was an avid curler, traveling to the Brier a couple of times. When unable to attend the Brier, Ron would watch curling on TV. He also enjoyed traveling, with his favorite holiday spot being Hawaii, where he tried to go every other year.
Ron loved his wife Delores, children and especially his grandchildren. He enjoyed sharing special times and his love of animals with his family and friends.
Beloved husband of Delores of Lomond, loving father of daughter Pamela (Trent) Tornquist of Lomond, son Sheldon (Katie) of Milo, two grandchildren Shawntel and T.J. Tornquist, two surrogate grandsons Lance and Dustin Gillespie of Calgary, sister-in-law Paulene Walker of Cochrane, brother-in-law Ernie (Liz) Ruggles of Lomond, and numerous nieces and nephews.
Ron was predeceased by his father and mother, Fred and Helen, brother Doug, and father and mother-in-law, Wayne and Violet Ruggles.
Funeral service was held Dec. 23 at 1:30 p.m. at the Bethany Lutheran Church in Lomond, with Rev. Ed Summers officiating.
Casket bearers were Everett Ruggles, Larry Root, Darren Lebsack, Marvin Henrickson, Buckey Ruggles and Garry Marks.
Internment in the Lomond Cemetery.

2004-12-17 - Betty Dougherty nee: McGinnis, of Vulcan
Dougherty, Betty June, of Vulcan, Alberta passed away peacefully at her home on Dec. 17, at the age of 67.
Betty was born on June 17, 1937 at Dawson Creek, B.C. to John and Agnes McGinnis. She lived in the Groundbirch area in her younger years, then moved to Victoria, B.C., where she met Wayne Dougherty and on July 8, 1960 they were married.
Over the years they moved from Victoria to several places, including Winnipeg, Man., Grande Prairie and then Ponoka. While living in Ponoka Betty was co-owner of the NAPA Store for twenty seven years. In August of 2004 Betty and Wayne moved to Vulcan where she has resided since.
Betty loved her family and enjoyed special times with them. She especially loved sharing quality time with each and every one of her grandchildren, playing cards and having tea parties.
Betty enjoyed traveling south in the winter to soak up the sun and spend time on the golf course with all of her winter friends. Her one true passion in life was ironing in the sun finding it to be extremely soothing.
Beloved wife of Wayne Dougherty of Vulcan, loving mother of a daughter Erin (Doug) Paulgaard and their children Shannon, Holly and Darren all of High River, a son Drew (Shirley) Dougherty and their children Dugan and Tucker all of Ponoka, a sister Diane (Joe) Gibault of Victoria, B.C., two sisters-in-law Arlene McGinnis of Tofino, B.C., Charlotte (Oliver) Barsfield of Winnipeg, Man. numerous cousins, nieces and nephews.
Betty was predeceased by her sister Irene Kehn, two brothers Ray McGinnis, Donald McGinnis and her parents.
A memorial mass was held at 11 a.m. on Dec. 21 at St. Andrew’s Catholic Church Vulcan with Rev. Fr. Philip Le celebrant.

2004-12-29 - Eva Elizabeth Clark, of Vulcan
Eva Elizabeth "Beth" Clark of Vulcan, formerly of High River, died peacefully at the Vulcan Community Health Care Centre on Dec. 29 at the age of 82.
She is survived by her daughters; Lois-Ann Brodrick, of Edmonton, Bettejean (Bill) Ferguson of Vulcan and Geraldine Glazerman of Spruce Grove and by seven grandchildren: Michael Brodrick, Jim (Bonnie) Ferguson, Cathy (Grant) Massey, Sherry (Dan) Kunkel, Debbie (Clark) Williams, Shayne (Shannon) Glazerman, Heather (Rob) Price and by thirteen great-grandchildren.
She was predeceased by her husband, Jim Clark on Apr. 19, 2001, her parents William and Bernice Gunter and one brother Harry Gunter.
A memorial service was held at Snodgrass Funeral Chapel, High River on Jan. 3, at 2 p.m. with Pastor Doug Barrie officiating. Cremation has taken place at Parklawn Crematorium. If desired, memorial tributes may be made to the Ladies’ Auxiliary to the Vulcan and District Health Care Centre, Box 299, Vulcan, Alberta T0L 2B0.
2004-12-29 - Reta Isabell Curr, of Black Diamond
1918-2004.
It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Reta Isabell Curr, on Dec. 29 at Oilfields General Hospital in Black Diamond, Alta. She was predeceased in 1983 by her first husband, Bill Black of Milo, and in 1997 by her second husband, David Curr of Alex, Alta.
Reta was the last surviving member of her family having been predeceased by her parents, three sisters and two brothers. She loved sports, either as a participant or spectator and her most special accomplishment was being a director of the Alberta Summer Games and watching her teams compete. Reta's favorite sports were bowling, baseball and curling and she spent many, many hours cheering on her teams. She will surely be missed by all who knew her for her great enthusiasm and sports knowledge.
Reta is survived by her three daughters, Carol Stier of High River, Joy Comeau of Turner Valley and Murial (David) Knowler of Turner Valley, Alberta. She will be dearly missed by her five grandchildren, Tracey (Bob) Davis, Rob (Alana) Stier, Michelle Comeau and Ryan and Reed Malmberg, as well as her two great grandchildren, Erin and Colin Davis.
A private family memorial service was held in Lacombe on Jan. 4 at 1 p.m. at Wilson's Funeral Home, 6120 Highway 2A Lacombe, Alberta.

2004-12-29 - Lawrence Donald Frey, of Vulcan
Lawrence Donald "Bay" Frey of Vulcan passed away Dec. 29 at the Vulcan Community Health Centre at the age of 81.
Lawrence was born Nov. 7, 1923 in Coaldale, Alta. to Erwin and Elizabeth Frey. He received his education at Readymade School.
In 1950 Lawrence married Betty Marie Riley. He farmed with his father until 1958. Lawrence and Betty then moved to a farmstead west of Carmangay. In 1966 the family moved to Glen Greene’s farm three miles south of Vulcan. Lawrence actively farmed until 2000.
He moved into the Long Term Care Unit at the Vulcan Community Health Centre due to health reasons.
Lawrence loved hunting, fishing and playing card games. He was an avid sports fan and especially loved baseball. Lawrence was a member of the Champion Seniors Drop-in Centre. He was known for his sense of humor and he loved to tease.
Loving father of a son Doug (Jocelyn Fradette) of Vulcan, a grand daughter Rachael, Jocelyn’s children Tina (Greg) Storle of Lake Alma, Sask., Kyla Eddy (Al) of Tuxford, Sask., Larry (Sharon) Skold of Calgary, three sisters Fran (Delvin) Andrews, Deanna (Edward) Smith all of Lethbridge, Bonnie Mullhand of Grand Forks, B.C. and numerous nieces and nephews.
Lawrence was predeceased by his wife Betty in 1984, a brother Ronald and his parents.
Funeral service was held Jan. 3 at 1:30 p.m. at the Vulcan United Church, with Sue McDonald D.M. officiating.
Honorary bearers were Stan Comstock, Gerry Gorill, Ron Barnes, John Weibe and Harvey Wenzel.
Casket bearers were Larry Skold, Jim Barnes, Greg Andrews, Bernard Bexte, Stew Birch and Brad Larkins.

Warnock, Thelma Margaret
Thelma Warnock, beloved wife of Clay Warnock of Brant, passed away at the High River hospital on Feb. 26, at the age of 78. Besides her loving husband, Thelma is survived by her children Arlene (Martin) of Rochester, Doug of Calgary, Margaret (Lyle) of Vernon, B.C.; Calvin (Sherry) of Hanna, Greg (Valerie) of Brant, step-daughter Cheryl (Gerry) of St. Albert, and Gaylene (Wayne) of Pilot Butte, Sask., as well as numerous grandchildren, great-grandchildren, nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her parents Frances and James Johnston and her infant son, Eric.
Thelma raised her family in the Camrose area, moving to Calgary, Okotoks and High River areas later in life. She and Clay enjoyed their retirement years in Brant. A celebration of Thelma’s life was held at Snodgrass Funeral Chapel, High River on Mar. 3 at 2 p.m. Elizabeth Pitura, celebrate.
