CALENSO, Betty Ellen (Newman)

On August 19, 2003, Mrs. Betty Ellen Calenso (Newman) of Edmonton, widow of Morly Calenso passed away at the age of 83 years.

Betty will be remembered in Lacombe as a long-time Bank of Montreal employee, a member of The United Church and an active participant in the local garden club.

She leaves to mourn her loss, one daughter Loretta (Grant) Gall of Calgary; five step-children, Kae (John) Sparkes of Calgary, Collin Calenso of Madeira Park, B.C., Lorale (Richard) Griffiths of Arcadia, CA, Luci (Augie) Sarong of Boyne Island, Australia, Dayle Lambert of Edmonton; grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

A Memorial Service will be held on Saturday, September 6, 2003 at 2:00 p.m. at the Unitarian Church of Edmonton, 12530 - 110 Avenue. Reverend Brian Kiely will officiate. Cremation. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Unitarian Church of Edmonton, T5M 2L5 or the S.P.C.A., 12251 - 67 Street, Edmonton, AB T5B 1M8.

BEAUCLAIR, Angus Albert

Angus Albert Beauclair born September 12, 1934 passed away suddenly August 22, 2003 at the age of 68 in Lacombe, Alberta.

Angus is survived by his wife Rachel of 48 years, his children Gord (Lany) Beauclair, Debbie Beauclair, Morris (Sandra) Beauclair, Brian (Pat) Beauclair, Earl (Eva) Beauclair, Linda (Stew) Sheflo, Carolin (Gary) Peters; grandchildren Joanne, Kyle, Christopher, April, Scott, Brandin, Brittney, Erin, Brooke, Kyle, Krystal, Bradly, Dylan; great-grandchildren Michael, Justine, Tasia, Alexis, Jordan, Katrina; siblings Leslie, (Michilene) Beauclair, Earl Beauclair, Pat (Bert) Daniels, Dorothy (Oliver) Doiron, Betty McMahon along with several nieces and nephews.

Angus is predeceased by his parents Albert and Pearl and his two sisters Hilda Quenell (Vincent) and Doris Wilson (Ted).

Angus loved to camp, fish and play cards, especially crib. Angus will be sadly missed by his family.

In lieu of flowers donations in Angus Beauclair’s memory may be made to the Heart and Stroke Foundation.

FOOKES, Marie Anita Joanne

Marie Fookes of Ponoka, Alberta passed away in the Palliative Care Unit on August 26, 2003 at the age of 46 years.

She was born on December 23, 1956, the fifth daughter of Charles and Lillian Jarratt of Naco, Alberta where she spent most of her childhood. In 1968, the farm was sold and the family moved to an acreage south of Bentley, Alberta where she graduated from Grade 12 in 1974. She enrolled in the School of Nursing in Ponoka and graduated two years later as a Psychiatric Nurse. She was married to David Fookes of Ponoka on May 23, 1981 in the United Church in Lacombe, They had three daughters; Jennifer, Jessica and Jackelyn and a granddaughter Shelby Genesis, now four months old. Marie always enjoyed dance recitals, festivals, vacations and other family outings with her family. She was diagnosed with cancer in March 2002 and put up a great challenge until her passing. Marie will be remembered forever as a very dedicated mother, wife, grandmother, aunt, co-worker and friend.

Marie is lovingly remembered by her dear husband Dave, daughters Jennifer, Jessica, Jackelyn and granddaughter Shelby all of Ponoka, her mother Lillian Jarratt of Lacombe, sisters Jeannie (Leo) Papadopolous of Edmonton, Gwen (Gregg) Hodge of Edmonton, Cynthia (Jim) Raabis of Bentley, Esther (Sven) Larsen of Sylvan Lake and Edna Jarratt of Lacombe, brothers Roger Jarratt of Lacombe and Dan (Alethia) of Vancouver, mother-in-law Eleanor Aucoin of Calgary as well as many nieces and nephews, cousins and other relatives and friends.

She was predeceased by her father Charles, brother Leslie and niece Nicole Jarratt recently.

The Funeral was held in the Church of the Open Bible with Reverend Spencer Laycock officiating on August 30, 2003 in Ponoka, Alberta and the Interment Service was held at the Bentley Cemetery. Memorial donations may be made to the Ponoka Dance Kompany, Lacombe Hospital Palliative Care Unit or Church of the Open Bible.

EATON, Elsie (nee Nawalkowski)

Elsie Eaton (nee Nawalkowski) passed away on August 26, 2003 at the age of 71 years after a battle with cancer.

Born on April 25, 1932 at Sandy Lake, Manitoba to Rose and John Nawalkowski, Elsie received her education in Alberta and in Washington State. She was joined in marriage to Arthur Eaton on June 20, 1965.

She was predeceased by her father John Nawalkowski.

Elsie will be dearly missed by her husband Les of Creston, son Jim Eaton of Calgary, Alberta, step-daughter Iris (Al) Jackman of Sarnia, Ontario, step-son Lloyd (Deb) Eaton of Nelson, B.C., step-daughter Ruth Eaton of Sylvan Lake, Alberta, sister Olga (Chris) Olesen of Farwell, Michigan, brother Mitchell (Eleanor) Nawalkowski of Rackham, Manitoba, Ernie (Frances) Nolan of Ponoka, Alberta, sister Marie Nawalkowski of Creston, B.C., brothers Caesar (Linda) Nawalkowski of Ponoka, Alberta and Nelson (Ronna) Nawalkowski of Creston, B.C. and numerous nieces and nephews.

The Memorial Service was held on Sunday, August 31, 2003 at the Seventh-day Adventist Church, Creston, B.C. with Pastor Jim Burgess officiating.

ZELIZNIK, William Frank (Bill)

William Frank (Bill) Zeliznik, beloved husband of Helene of Red Deer, Alberta passed away in Red Deer Regional Hospital on Tuesday, August 26, 2003 at the age of 77 years.

Born on March 11, 1926 at Gleichen, Alberta, Bill was an avid musician, hockey player and politician. He worked as a CPR station agent until his retirement in 1970. In 1949 Bill married his darling Helene Sawatsky and together they had three daughters. In 1960 doctors removed a brain tumor, leaving him hemiplegic. He was often heard to tell that what he gained at this time, his strong and life transforming faith, was worth it all. Many people will remember Bill for his unquenchable sense of humor and love of practical jokes. These who knew him best remember his uniquely selfless ways. How he always looked to see who needed special care or attention, a card or a letter. How he endured endless challenges without complaint or criticism.

Bill loved his family and always enjoyed getting together for family gatherings. He will be greatly missed by his beloved wife Helene, his sister Lillian (Ralph) Hertz, his brother Tommy Zeliznik, his daughters Debra (Gunther) Schroeder, Valerie (Barry) Garding and Robin (Glen) Bird; grandchildren Christy (Jim) Andreeff, Kurt (Lyn) Schroeder, Angel (Mike) Kehler, Amy (Brad) French, Laura Garding and Ben Bird; great-grandchildren Nicolas, Lucas, Katarina, Angelica and Alexa Andreeff, Jaymz and Christopher Kehler and Alexander Garding.

Bill was predeceased by his parents, John and Mary Zeliznik.

The family wishes to thank all the medical and nursing staff at Red Deer Regional Hospital who provided gentle and compassionate care to both Bill and Helene during the past four months. Family visitation at Parkside Alliance Church on Thursday from 5:00-7:00 p.m., friends from 7:00-8:00 p.m. Interment and graveside service Friday morning at 10 a.m. Memorial Service was held at Parkside Alliance Church in Lacombe at 2:00 p.m. on Friday, August 29 with Reverend Jim Heller officiating. Donations in Bill’s memory may be made to World Vision, a child sponsor agency Bill supported for many years.

“As time goes by, the really important things in life become stronger, more meaningful and even more precious...You’re at the heart of everything that truly matters to me in this life.

GARRETT, Walter James

Walter James Garrett passed away on August 27, 2003 in the Drayton Valley Health Center at the age of 82 years.

Walter was born at Traynor, Saskatchewan on September 29, 1920. He shared a special bond with his eight children; Ray (Marg) Garrett of Lacombe, two children Dyane and Doug, Phyllis McIntosh of Red Deer and daughter Lori, Edith (Chris) Schultz of Alix and two children Darwin and Tina, Lorne (Cecilia) of Alsike and three children Pat, Brian and Shelly, Nancy Garrett (Doug Bennett) of Ponoka and two children Darcy and Rich, Linda Garret of Alix and three children Jason, Jeffrey and Brandy, Larry Garrett of Alix and three children Justin, Candace and Josh, Norman Garrett (Corinne) and daughter Jade, one brother Jim Garrett of Riverton, Manitoba, six great-grandchildren; Darien, Brandon, Shelby, Christiane, Dustin, Zackary as well as numerous nieces and nephews.

Walter was predeceased by his wife Mary Alma Garrett in 1995, one son David William Garrett in 1965 as well as two brothers; Art and Charlie Garrett.

He will be missed by family and everyone who knew him.

Funeral Services were held from the Alix Community Center on Monday, September 1, 2003 at 1:00 p.m. Inurnment took place in the Clive Cemetery. ATKINSON, Kathleen
July 19, 1920 - August, 29, 2003

Kathleen Atkinson peacefully passed away on August 29 in Lacombe.

Her immediate family; daughters Brenda Rolfe and Irene Finney and son Roy Atkinson were with her in her final hours. Therefore a Remembrance Service was held on Monday, September 1 at St. Cyprian’s Anglican Church where her ashes were interred with those of her husband Keith.

Sevigny, Doreen Gertrude

Mrs. Doreen Gertrude Sevigny passed away peacefully on Saturday, August 30, 2003 with her girls by her side.

Doreen was born in Melville, Saskatchewan on September 23, 1921. She was united in marriage to Alfred Sevigny in May 1944.

Doreen will be lovingly remembered by her three daughters; Lynn (Dave) Will, Lee (Terry) Bott, Laverne (Rod) Turnbull all of Lacombe. Very special to Doreen were her grandchildren; Todd Sevigny (Sandra), Doug (Julie) Will, Lisa (Brent) Bailey, Kandace Turnbull, Angie Turnbull (Kevin), Ryan Bott and great-grandchildren; Jacob, Zachary and Nathanial Bailey and Kelsey and Kristin Will. Doreen is also survived by two sisters; Gladys Stratton of Brooks, Alberta and Joyce Abel of Melville, Saskatchewan and one brother Alan (Gladys) Hepburn of Grand Bend, Ontario; her brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law; Ervy and Marie Sevigny of Calgary, Alberta, Lewis and Irene Sevigny of Manitoba and Dovey Hepburn of Ontario.

Doreen was predeceased by her husband Fred, her mother and father Rankin and William Hepburn and brothers; Elmer, Melville and William.

Doreen was a loving wife, mother, grandmother and great-grandmother with a wonderful sense of humor and always there for her family. She was very athletic, enjoyed skating, curling, dancing and even tried her hand at golf. She skated with her grandchildren into her seventies. She loved hockey and never missed an Oilers game (she called them her boys) until Alzheimers robbed her of her ability to enjoy her beloved game. She passed on her love of music to her daughters and found great comfort in it in her final days.

The family would like to give special thanks and appreciation to Dr. Visser and the entire staff of the Chinook Unit of the Alberta Hospital, Ponoka for the loving and exceptional care given to our Mom (Peanut).We would also like to give thanks to Barb Pohl for her years of devotion and care to Mom.

HOLMWOOD, Dolores Jean

Dolores Jean Holmwood of Lacombe passed away peacefully on August 30, 2003 at the Lacombe Hospital and Care Center at the age of 70 years.

She is survived by her loving husband of 50 years Jim, her children; Layne (Bonnie) of Sherwood Park, Alberta, Grant (Gail) of Okotoks, Alberta, Darren (Kim) of Lacombe, Alberta, six grandchildren; Dwayne, Miles, Marissa, Amy Rae, Kris and Jeff. She is also survived by her brother-in-law Glen Holmwood of Porcupine Plains, Saskatchewan.

Dolores was predeceased by her mother Jean Shaw, brother Lee, sister-in-law and brother-in-law Dale and Doris Holmwood.

She will be greatly missed by numerous nieces, nephews and long-time friends.

Funeral Services were held from Wilson’s Funeral Chapel, 6120 Highway 2A, Lacombe, Alberta on Wednesday, September 3, 2003 at 2:00 p.m. Interment followed in the Fairview Cemetery, Lacombe. DOOL, Beatrice Ada

Beatrice Ada Dool passed away September 2, 2003 in the Bentley Care Centre. Ada was born in Nome, North Dakota, U.S.A. on July 13, 1906 to Adolph and Julia Gillund of the Meadowbrook District.

Ada met and married the late George Clayton Dool on January 18, 1927. They took up married life on George’s farm in the Lincoln District. There they raised a family of three children, son Vernon and two daughters, Verna and Barbara.

She was predeceased by George on January 14, 1964, daughter Verna Voss on August 19, 1980 and two grandsons, Gary Voss in 1960 and Jody Burnett in 1997; her sisters, Effie Miller, Hattie Bjornson, Lillian Rusk and two brothers, Elmer and Norman Gillund.

Ada leaves to mourn her son Vernon (Mary) and families, Barbara (Ervin) and families and the Voss families; her sister-in-law, Helene Gillund of Ponoka, a host of nieces and nephews and a multitude of friends that stretched across North America.

Funeral services were held from Wilson’s Funeral Chapel on Saturday, September 6, 2003 at 2:00 P.M. with Reverend Franklin Lough officiating. Interment Service at the Fairview Cemetery. Honorary Pallbearers were Jack and Doreen Kanngiesser, Adam and Elsie Schonheiter, Ellen Glenn, Jean Bruns, Cliff Baldwin, Tom Alexander, and Russ Creasey. Active Pallbearers were Martin Wilson, Wayne Spink, Douglas White, John Trynchuk, George MacRae and John Hnybida. Organist was Marilyn Almond.

A time of fellowship followed at the Royal Canadian Legion. Donations may be made to the Multiple Sclerosis Society, 4322 - 52 Avenue, Red Deer, AB T4N 4J9 or to the Royal Canadian Legion #79, Lacombe Benevolent Fund.

BUGG, Warren

Mr. Warren Bugg of Bentley, Alberta passed away in the Rimbey Hospital and Care Centre on Wednesday, September 3, 2003 at the age of 84 years.

Warren will be lovingly remembered by his wife of 54 years Hester, one daughter Gloria (Fred) Duffy of Sherwood Park, two grandsons; Colin (Michelle) Duffy of Calgary and Eric Duffy of Sherwood Park. Warren also leaves to mourn two sisters; Myrle Stewart of Red Deer, Pauline (Maynard) Rapley of Climax, Saskatchewan, one brother Fred (Ann) Peno of Bracken, Saskatchewan, two sisters-in-law; Jean Peno of Shaunavon, Saskatchewan, Della Budd of Summerland, B.C. and by numerous nieces and nephews.

Funeral Services were held from the Bentley United Church on Monday, September 8, 2003 at 2:30 p.m. with Reverend Raymond Goodship and Pastor Jim Toews officiating. Interment followed in the Bentley cemetery. If friends desire, memorial contributions may be made to Area III of the Rimbey Hospital and Care Centre, P.O. Box 440, Rimbey, Alberta T0C 2J0.

In memory of the Late Mr. Warren Bugg a donation will be made to the Rimbey Hospital Bed Project. A lasting memorial presented by Wilson’s Funeral Chapel.

Special thanks to Dr. Rautenbach and all the staff of Home III for their care and support while Warren was with them.

The family also wish to thank all those who provided transportation for Hettie to visit Warren.
