JOHNSTON, Wilfred Clifford
It is with sadness that the family of Wilfred Clifford Johnston announce his passing at the age of 67 on September 18, 2003 at Blackfalds, Alberta where he resided for the past 46 years.
Born on February 17, 1936 at Rosetown, Saskatchewan, Wilfred lived on a farm at D’arcy, Saskatchewan until four years of age. The Johnston family moved to the Vancouver area where Wilfred started school. Several years later they returned to Alix, Alberta where farm life was again enjoyed. Wilfred left school to begin carpentry and construction work with his father Clifford Johnson and uncle Robert L. Johnston for many years. A stint working at Fort McMurray when the Tar Sands began was brief as it did not suit him being away from home and family. Hence, a new venture began as a Finishing Cabinet Maker. Wilf had his workshop at home and fully completed many customized kitchen cabinets and renovations in homes and businesses in the area. His talent and craftsmanship was greatly admired and appreciated. Wilf’s pasttimes and passions were to travel and did so extensively. His adventures began as a very young man working on a sailing ship as “Jack of all Trades”, to visiting , driving and exploring in over 40 countries. His last trip was to Fiji which was one of his favorite places plus any island (the more remote the better) in the South Pacific. After retiring from cabinet finishing, he spent many enjoyable hours at auction sales - either buying, selling or acting as a “ring man”. Wilf loved collecting antiques and collectibles, time spent at his “farm”, nature, reading, reminiscing and teasing his granddaughters.
Wilf will be sadly missed by his loving family; his wife of 42 years Beulah, son Darcy of Winfield, Alberta, daughter Alana (Paul) Bruce of Airdrie, Alberta and two granddaughters; Alexia Michelle and Hayley Morgan Bruce. In addition, he is survived by his mother Claire Johnston of Lacombe, Alberta and his brother Kenneth (Irene) of Buck Lake, Alberta, his sister Fern Edwards of Blackfalds, Alberta and numerous nieces and nephews.
To honor Wilfred’s wishes an immediate family burial will take place. A Celebration of Life took place at Blackfalds Community Hall, 4810 Womacks Road on Monday, September 22, 2003 from 2:00 to 4:00 p.m. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Camp Quality Sylvan Lake c/o Kid’s Cancer Care Foundation of Alberta, Suite #205, 609-14 Street, N.W, Calgary, Alberta T2N 2A1 or Children’s Wish Foundation, #320, 223-12 Avenue, S.W., Calgary, Alberta T2R 0G9.
