Mrs. Marjorie (McAlister) Grant, beloved mother of Audrey Schwartz, of Red Deer, formerly of Melfort, Saskatchewan, passed peacefully from this life on Wednesday, February 21, 2001 at the age of 92 years. Marjorie was born at home in the Silver Park district (south in Melfort, Sask.) on November 18, 1908, the eldest child of David and Annie McAlister. She was raised on the farm in the Silver Park district, and attended the country school near their home. After completing her schooling, she continued to live at home, helping her mother with the many household tasks of the farm. She was involved in musical and social events in her community during this time, and it was there she met a handsome and fun-loving young man named Ted. On November 1, 1933, Ted Grant and Marjorie were married at her home. Following their marriage, they moved to the Clemens district where they farmed along the '44 Trail' for forty years. Marjorie kept the "home fires burining" for her husband. During the early years, she and Ted spent many winter evenings with Ted playing at community dances, and curling with friends. Ballgames were squeezed in during the busy summer months. After the arrival of their only daughter, Audrey, their social calendar included school, music and sporting events. Marjorie experienced a "new life" in 1946, and became involved in the Church of the Nazarene of Melfort, Sask. After selling the farm and moving into town in 1973, she volunteered at the senior's lodges, leading Bible studies, reading and serving on the Nirvana Auxiliary. She loved to read and study, taught Sunday School for many years and was involved in the music ministry at the church. Marjorie also kept busy with sewing projects for her grandchildren. Each grandchild and great-grandchild received one of her afghans, the most recent completed in November, 2000. After moving to Red Deer, following Ted's passing, she became involved in many church activities; Bible study, sewing circle, J.O.Y. group, and also took part in the activities at Canyon View Place. She so enjoyed getting to know those in her apartment building. Marjorie was predeceased by her husband, Ted in December 1995. She leaves to mourn, her daughter, Audrey and her husband Earl Schwartz of Red Deer; her three grandchildren, Judy (Steve) Fillmore of Didsbury, Laurie (Cheri) Schwartz and Kelly (Jody) Schwartz, of Calgary. Being together as a family was a great joy and we have many happy memories to cherish. "Ma" was very special to her eight great-granchildren, Christi and Brett Fillmore, Kyla, Kenzie and Kieran Schwartz, and Alanna, Adam and Lauren Schwartz; her sister, Marion Hopkins of Edmonton; her two sisters-in-law, Dora McAlister of Melfort and Edna McLaren of Olds; and numerous nieces and nephews. As well as her husband Ted, Marjorie was predeceased by her parents, an infant sister, Evelyn; and younger brother, Cameron. A celebration of Marjorie's life will be held at First Church of the Nazarene, 2 McVicar Street, Red Deer, on Monday, February 26, 2001 at 3:00 p.m. with The Reverend Dale Fallon officiating.
