FLARO

Mr. Joseph Herbert Alexander 'Herb' Flaro, beloved husband to Georgina of Red Deer, passed away on Friday, March 16, 2001, at the age of 59 years. Herb was born in rural Ontario in 1941. He was the eldest of eleven children. When his father died in 1954, Herb was 13 years old. God blessed him with great strength, courage and wisdom to accept the role of patriarch for his family. His loyalty to family and the church was steadfast. In 1967 Herb married his true love Georgina with whom he spent the next 33 years of his life. Together they loved and raised three children, Bert, Rebecca and Jeffrey. Herb and Georgina brought their family from Ontario to Alberta in 1980. They moved to the rural community of Turner Valley. It was here that Herb and his family blossomed and grew as members of the Diamond-Valley community. Herb's contribution to the St. Michael's parish included every aspect of human kindness from the children, church functions and the Knights of Columbus to ministering to th elderly and in infirm. The creation and stand up of the Black Diamond chapter of the Knights of Columbus was not the least of Herb's projects and marks on the community. Herb worked in the oilfields with Pembina for fifteen years. He served with the 2nd Battalion Princess Patricia Canadian Light Infantry Jump Company in the late 1950's as a private infantryman. Herb was a servant of God and a beacon of light to the communities he served. His quick smile and bright eyes were not only his trademark but one of his gifts from God that gave him the ability of bright light, hope and peace to others. Herb and Georgina spent two weeks in Jamaica in 1997 with some of their many dear friends. This was their first real vacation and fulfilled a lifetime dream of the couple. Herb spent much of the last five years helping love, enjoy and raise two grandchildren, Micheila, 5 years and Sophie, 3 years. Their daughter and son-in-law served in the Canadian Forces and Herb and Georgina often kept the children for weeks at a time while Mark and Rebecca were away on duty. Herb's youngest son Jeffrey followed in his footsteps to become a truck driver. His son Bert passed away in Turner Valley in 1987 in the arms of the community Herb and his family had become a part of. Besides his loving wife Georgina, Herb is survived by his son Leonard Jeffrey Flaro of Red Deer; his daughter Julia Rebecca Verrall of Edmonton and her husband Mark Allan Verrall, as well as his two grandchildren Micheila and Sophie. HALVORSON, HOWARD O.
May 24, 1918 to March 30, 2001

On March 30, 2001, Mr. Howard Halvorson of Sylvan Lake passed away at the age of 82. His life is an incredible gift and inspiration to all of us. He was a loving husband, dedicated father, and successful businessman. Cherishing his memory are his wife of 45 years, Aneta; three children, Connie, Glenn (Pam), Jennifer (Keith) and son-in-law Brett Matson; eight grandchildren, Dallas (Tamara), Charmaine (Domenic), Cherilyn (Ted), Nolan, Brandon, Ashley, Travis and Derek; and one great granddaughter, Anja. Howard is survived by two sisters, Alice and Florence; two brothers, Arthur (Grace) and Clifford (Daisy); and numerous nieces and nephews. Howard was predeceased by his father, Andrew; mother, Lydia and brother Gordon. Howard was the fourth child born to Lydia and Andrew Halvorson on May 24, 1918, in Strongfield, SK. In April 1919 the family moved south of Sylvan Lake to half section, which his father had previously purchased. Howard attended school at Burnt Lake and was an avid hockey player even into his adult years. He was able to purchase his first truck in 1945, and began a business of general trucking. The trucking business eventually changed to road construction and maintenance, and saw various trucks throughout the years until 1988 at the age of 70, he retired. In 1955, Howard married the former Aneta Hagerman. They resided in Red Deer from 1958 to January of 1967, when they purchased the south Halvorson quarter from Howard's Mom. This generation would also begin the process of developing a bare quarter into a home for their family and a busy farm in addition to the trucking business. Howard will be sadly missed by his family and friends. He will be remembered for how caring he was as a husband, father, grandfather and friend, for his quick wit and often dry sense of humor. In our journeys, we will carry memories of him with us, and his spirit of love will be with each of us. We will miss you so much, but we will let you go; your soul is set free. A celebration of his life will be held at the Sylvan Lake Community Center, 4725-43 Street, on Friday, April 6, 2001 at 3:00 p.m. Arrangements in care of Parkland Funeral Home and Crematorium, 6287-67A Street (on Taylor Drive, one block north of 67 Street) Red Deer.
