OLDRING

Patricia 'Joy' Oldring (nee: Warren), passed away peacefully with her family at her side on Monday, March 12, 2001. Born in London, England, Joy came to Canada on the Queen Mary as a young 'war bride' after marrying flight Lieutenant Edward Oldring. Joy had a real love for children and was a gifted and creative teacher. She taught school in Claresholm, Ottawa, and Red Deer. After moving to Vancouver, Joy became a Senior VP with a large toy store chain later opening her own store, Joy's Play and Learn. Joy recently moved back to Red Deer in August of 2000. Joy was predeceased by her husband and her best friend, Reverend Edward Oldring in 1996. She leaves, to celebrate her life, five children and their spouses Robin and Bonnie, Brian and Jane, Margaret and Doug, John and Bonnie and David and Jane. Nan's 13 loving grandchildren are Carol (Tracy, great grandchildren Austin and Alex) Peter, Sara, Craig, Heather, Paul, Matthew, Kurt, Lori, Kelly, Nicholas, Rachel, Christopher. Joy's sister, Audrey in Australia, special nieces Margaret Towers (husband Tom) and Maxine Allinson (husband Tony). Joy had a real love for life and family but was looking forward to being with her husband Ed once again. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made if desired, to Parkland Community School. Joy was a Principal of this school and had a true heart for some very special students. The family would like to thank Dr. Shirley Hovan and staff on Unit 37 for all the care and kindness they extended to Joy and the family. A memorial service will be held on Friday, March 16, at 2:00 p.m. at Unity Baptist Church (139 Northey Avenue).

ORCHISON

Julia 'Megan' Orchison passed away at the Red Deer Regional Hospital on Saturday, March 10, 2001 at the age of 73 years. Megan was born July 13, 1927 at Aggaziz, B.C. Her memory lives on with her children Robert Orchison of Shawningan Lake, B.C., Judy Cornell of Red Deer, Alberta, Lawrence Orchison of Richmond, B.C.; six grandchildren, Kim (Richard) Zigler of Salmon Arm, B.C., Robynn (Tim) MacFarlane of Abbotsford, B.C., Shawn, Krista, Gary and Sasha Cornell all of Red Deer; three great grandchildren, Alexandria, Maddison and Rebecca MacFarlane of Abbotsford, B.C.; her brother David (Emily) Llywarch of Penticton, B.C.; sister Joan (Roy) Bertram of Langley, B.C.; two sisters-in-law, Agnes Orchison of Summerland, B.C., Mary Johnston of Nepean, Ontario; a brother-in-law Chris (Marcy) Orchison of Surrey, B.C. Megan was predeceased by her mother Rebecca in 1954, father Walter Llywarch in 1963, brother Donald in 1992, sister May in 1996, husband Robert Russell in 1995, daughter Mary Martens in 1998, a granddaughter Melissa Cornell in 1976, and a son-in-law Gary Cornell in 1993. A graveside service with the family in attendance will be held at a later date. Condolences emailed to condolences@ reddeerfunerlhome.com will be forwarded directly to the family. PETERSON

Mr. Irving Eugene Thomas Peterson of Alix passed away at the Ponoka General Hospital on Tuesday, April 3, 2001 at the age of 83 years. Irving was born February 25, 1918 at the farm in the George School District north of Mirror, Alberta. He attended country schools in the area before starting to farm south of Alix. Irving married Ethel Rouse in 1943 and to this union three children were born. Irving is survived by his companion of over 40 years Gwen Jarvis of Alix, his two sons Gary (Lesley) Peterson of Calgary, grandchildren Richelle and Kris, Curtis (Donna) Peterson of Alix, grandsons Craig (Jenny) and Jeff; one daughter Myrna of Calgary, grandchildren Ralene and Brad; one sister Alice Nielsen of Alix; and her son Russell (Paulette) Jarvis, grandson Terry Jarvis all of Edmonton. He was predeceased by his wife Ethel (1994), his parents George and Bessie, brother Carl and sister Ellene. Funeral services will be held from Wilson's Funeral Chapel, Lacombe on Saturday, April 7, 2001 at 2:00 p.m. with Rev. Susan Skrepneck officiating. PHILLIPS

Alan Gerald Phillips passed away peacefully at Westshore Laylum on March 12, 2001, born at Allan, Sask. Sept. 14, 1928. Alan was predeceased by his parents and brothers Gordon and Russell. He is survived by his brothers Lester (Margaret) of Ladner and Laurie (Leona) of Red Deer, AB and sister-in-law Louise of Red Deer; his very close and dear friend Margaret; nephews, Jim (Mayling), Gil (Betty-Ann), Wayne (Cindy), Lester (Colleen), Gordon (Joanne), Blair (Cindy), Darryl (Darcy), Brad (Josie) and thirteen grand nieces and nephews. A Memorial Service will be held at Ladner United Church on Monday, March 19, 2001 at 1:30 p.m. In lieu of flowers a donation may be made to Delta Hospital or a charity of your choice. SAND

Beloved husband, father and grandfather, Mr. Gordon Dennis Sand of Rimbey, Alberta passed away at the Red Deer Regional Hospital Centre on Friday, March 16, 2001 at the age of 65 years. Gordon will be lovingly remembered by his wife Jackie; one son Darrell (Elaine) Sand of Red Deer; one daughter Terry (Glen) MacNeill of Calgary; and five grandchildren, Clayton and Erin Hanner and Katie, Taylor and Griffin Sand. He will also be lovingly remembered by his brothers and sisters Karen Benjamin, Martin (Molly) Sand, Marie (Fred) Hull, Violet (Helmut) Scheiner, Shirley (Bob) Russell, Doreen (Mel) Chambers, Hjordis Brown, Les (Merrlynn) Sand and Sharon Sand; as well as numerous nieces and nephews. Gordon was predeceased by his parents, Bjorne and Margot Sand, two brothers and two sisters. Mary Akins Sande (nee Waters) of Ponoka passed away on March 10, 2001. SAUNDERS

It is with great sadness we announce the passing of Howard 'Lee' Saunders, beloved husband of Vernice. Lee passed away at the Lacombe Hospital and Care Centre on March 25th, 2001 at the age of 78, with his family at his side. He was the second child of a family of eight; born to Howard and Jennie Saunders of Woodynook district west of Lacombe. Lee attended school and lived in the Woodynook area all his life until he moved to Lacombe in 1998. He worked in the Lacombe area until he went to drive truck on the Alaska highway. In 1943 he joined the army taking his basic training in Grande Prairie, his advanced training in Red Deer, and then overseas later that year. Upon arriving overseas he became a member of the 65th Tank Transport Detail, where he hauled tanks to the front lines. While serving in active duty Lee was in England, France, Belgium, Germany and assisted in the liberation of Holland. After returning home in January 1946 he purchased a farm in the Woodynook district, next to where he was born. Later, when his father retired Lee purchased the home farm. In 1949 he met Vernice and they were united in marriage June 15th, 1950. Margaret Saunders and Harlin Kinley; Marie Hill and Charlie Saunders joined them in a triple wedding ceremony. Lee loved to play softball, and caught and coached for the Gull Lake team for many years. He enjoyed hunting and was an avid fisherman in all seasons; camping was a family interest as time went on. Curling was also a pleasure for him until he had to give it up due to poor health. Wood crafts and of course, family and farming were his passion. Lee was a hardworking, kind and gentle man; a dedicated husband, caring father and grandfather. He was also a loving brother who always saw the best in others. Lee leaves to mourn in passing his wife and best friend Vernice; one son Larry Saunders and his wife Fay of Saskatoon, Sask; one daughter Barbara Winslow and her husband Brian of Lacombe, and three grandchildren Kurt Saunders of Saskatoon, Chelsey and Lindsay Winslow of Lacombe. He is also surived by three sisters and four brothers, Jeanne (Gardie) Shaw, Charlie (Marie) Saunders, Roy Saunders and companion Eileen, Margaret Kinley, Herb (Evelyn) Saunders, Hazel (Howard) Young and Don (Mabel) Saunders; his sister-in-law Lily (Ben) Zirk and numerous nieces, nephews and cousins; one favorite step-brother Fred (Shirley) Doberstein and numerous extended family members. He was predeceased by his mother and father, two step mothers, four brothers-in-law, three sisters-in-law, three nephews and two nieces. Funeral services will be held from Wilson's Funeral Chapel Lacombe on Thursday, March 29th, 2001 at 2:00 pm. Interment will follow in the Lacombe Fairview Cemetery. SCHULZE

Florence Schulze passed away suddenly on March 23, 2001 at the age of 56 years. She is survived by her loving family, two sons Kurt Leon, and Christopher Schulze; seven sisters; one brother as well as numerous relatives and friends. She was predeceased by her parents, one niece, one nephew, one brother and one sister. A Memorial Service will be held at Gaetz Memorial United Church, 4758 Ross St., Red Deer, AB on Monday, April 2, 2001 at 1:00 p.m. In lieu of flowers, a donation in Florence's memory may be made to Central Alberta Women Emergency Shelter, Box 561, Red Deer, AB, T4N 5G1, or the Red Deer & District SPCA, Box 931, Red Deer, AB, T4N 5H3.
