Alan Andrew Hunter of Elnora passed away suddenly in the Red Deer Regional Hospital on June 10, 2001, at the age of 63 years. Alan was born in Elnora on February 1, 1938, the fifth child and the third son of Charles Roy and Grace (Ogilvie) Hunter. The family lived in several places as Alan was growing up, always on farms. There was never much money, but Alan enjoyed the simple things like sledding with the Silbernagel boys, horseback riding, baseball, hockey and later, curling. He quit school when he was fourteen to go to work for several farmers, including Trev Roberts, Mac McAllister and Vernon Oak. He saved enough money to start a herd of purebred Herefords and also milked cows and shipped cream for years. Alan married Christine Huggins on July 12, 1969 and they lived in Roy and Grace's old house for the first five years. They then moved to their present home west of Elnora. Alan worked at the Elnora General Hospital as the maintenance engineer from May of 1974 to April of 1995 when the hospital was officially closed. Since 1998, he worked part-time at D'n A gardens. Alan was an avid outdoorsman, participating in activities like curling, hunting, fishing and gardening. He loved his animals, especially his cows and cats. He just loved to see things grow, from baby pigs and calves to vegetables and flowers. He also enjoyed spending time working on various projects around the farm. Besides having a love of the outdoors, Alan always loved to watch the chuckwagon races or a good hockey game, especially when the Oilers were playing. He had a great love for children and was eagerly awaiting the arrival of his first grandchild. Alan loved the simple things in life, always had a kind word, and had a tendency to accept things as they came without judgement. He was a gentle, kind, caring man who will be sadly missed by all who knew and loved him. Alan is survived by Christine, his loving wife of 31 years; his children, Kathryn of Calgary; Carole of Toronto; Owen of Elnora; brothers, Norm of Elnora; Willy (Holly) of Calgary; sisters Eva Young; Ruby (Dave) Brown; both of Elnora and Nora Rollinson of Red Deer; as well as numerous nieces, nephews and cousins. Alan was predeceased by his father, Roy in 1970, mother, Grace in 1992; brother, Orval in 1935 and sister, Dorothy in 1953. Funeral Services will be held on Thursday, June 14, 2001 at 2:00 p.m. from the Elnora Community Centre with Reverend Inez Hannett and Reverend Ken Wells officiating. KERBES
Elmer Norman Kerbes. On May 22, 2001, Elmer Kerbes passed away at the Stettler Hospital after a lengthy illness. He was born March 20th, 1922, on a homestead west of Big Valley, Alberta. The youngest son of Annette and Jaan Kerbes, Elmer's first language was Estonian but he quickly learned English at the one-room Wooded Hills School. After completing high school in Castor, he attended Normal School in Calgary. At barely 18 years of age his teaching career began at Hoadley, Alberta, where some students were nearly as old as - and rather bigger than - he was. In the early 40's, Elmer returned to the family farm. In 1950, a young teacher named Marguarite Gilday arrived there as a boarder and thought she didn't plan to stay, Elmer pursuaded her to change her mind and on July 13th, 1954, they were married. Elmer was an active part of the community for his entire life. He was a member of the Farmers' Union and social clubs in the Linda Hall, Wooded Hills and Big Valley areas, a member of the Big Valley Legion for over 40 years and of the Elks for 55 years. Whatever was going on, from tournaments to the Big Valley Raft Race, the community could always count on Elmer's help. He also enjoyed many years as the pitcher for the Big Valley West Ball team, organized and participated in many bonspiels, and upon taking up golf in his later years, Elmer became a "driving force" in the Big Valley golf club, as well as motorhoming with Marg and friends to test every golf course in the province. But first and last, music was a big part of Elmer's life. While studying in Calgary, he played with Al Oliver and his Maui Islanders, and back in the big Valley area and joined with his brother Albert Kerbes, cousin Helen (Kerbes) Mulligan and Charlie Klaus to form the "4 K's" orchestra, playing saxophone and trumpet. Marg became the piano player for the group, and they were eventually joined by their children, and for over four decades the 4K's provided music for countless dances. When the Big Valley Marching Band was formed in the late 1960's, Elmer took up the sousaphone and continued to polish it up for parade season for the next 20 years. As recently as last autumn, his talents were appreciated at the Big Valley Drop In Centre and the United Church. Elmer was predeceased by his parents, sister Rose (Kerbes) Olson, brother John Kerbes, sister-in-law Rose (Nicklom) Kerbes and nephew Anthony Oliver. He leaves to mourn his bride of 47 years, Marguarite Kerbes of Big Valley, his daughter and son-in-law Annette and Michael Berry of Edmonton, his son and daughter-in-law Hal and Kathi Kerbes of Calgary, his much cherished grandchildren Alexander Berry, Hannah Kerbes and Sarah Kerbes, his sisters Elizabeth Kerbes and Elvine Oliver of the Heart Haven Home and his brother, Albert Kerbes of Big Valley. Elmer will be fondly remembered by many relatives and a host of friends, and will always be an example of a life well-lived. Funeral services will be held at 4:30 p.m. Sunday, May 27th, 2001 at the Big Valley Jubilee Hall. As an expression of sympathy, memorial contributions may be made to the Apalstic Anemia Society of Canada or to a charity of your choice in care of Brennen Funeral Home, 4819 49 Street, Stettler, AB.
