MANN
Ira Keith Mann passed away at the age of 61 years in a motor vehicle accident while riding his motorcycle on Friday, May 11, 2001. Keith was born in Alix on October 6, 1939. He was raised on his family farm and attended school in Alix and Mirror. His passion for music and living, his concern and respect for others and his desire to make the world a better place than he found it, led him through an exciting and rewarding life. After attending the University of Alberta, Keith taught in the communities of Spruce View, Elnora and Innisfail. In all three communities he was highly regarded and respected as a fine educator. During this time, Keith was very active in the growth of the Canadian Band Directors Association, Alberta Chapter, and the Canadian Band Directors Association where he served enthusiastically as president for both organizations. Keith was the co-founder of Canadian Youth on Tour, an organization that allowed many Canadian students to travel Europe over a span of thirteen years. He was also editor of the Canadian Band Journal for twenty five years. Well into his career, Keith attended Washington State University and earned a Masters degree in Conducting. Keith began to establish the Red Deer College School of Music in the fall of 1979 and remained at the college as a conductor, instructor and mentor until his passing. Keith became the director of the Red Deer Community Band Society in 1991 and was greatly responsible for its tremendous growth and success. Keith passionately loved his time as conductor with his Red Deer Royals and spent many dedicated hours to ensure their success. Keith received much recognition from his local, national and international colleagues and was respected and loved as a fine and wonderful man throughout Europe, Australia, United States and Canada. At his passing he was the president of Phi Beta Mu International, a band directors fraternity and was past president of the NAMM Affiliated Music Business Institutions. Keith was a past president of Rotary International and was an honorary member of the prestigious American Band Masters Association. Keith was a survivor of prostate cancer and served as a positive and caring mentor for those in the same situation. Keith adored his two children, Michael and Lisa and took great pride in them both. He enjoyed many hours camping and hiking with his son and daughter and had great memories of this time with them as children. In 1987 Keith married his best friend, love and soul mate, Marilyn Ure, and they enjoyed fourteen full years of adventures and complete happiness. Biking, hiking, kayaking and travelling were their joys. Keith was one of those rare souls who had the ability to deeply touch those he met and to make a tremendous impact on the lives of others. He also leaves to mourn his brother Gary (Marion) Mann; his sisters Judy Mann and Sandra (Rod) Walstrom; Aunt Annie Mann, Marie Mann and various cousins, nieces and nephews.
