Monica Dawn Simpson-Wilcox of Edmonton, tragically lost her life on Friday, June 8, 2001 at the young age of 21 years. She leaves behind her loving husband, Sean Wilcox; 18 month old daughter, Cailyn Marie Wilcox; Father and Mother, Douglas and Dixie Simpson of Alix, AB; sister, Veronica Simpson of Victoria, B.C.; Mother and Father-In-Laws, John and Kathleen Wilcox of Lansing, Michigan and Bill and Michelle Friars of Eagle River, Alaska. Grandparents, Irene Simpson of Picton, Ontario and Mary Corkum of Alix, Alberta. Monica was born in Fredericton, N.B. on October 14, 1979. She proudly served her country in the Canadian Forces at CFB Edmonton Lord Strathcona Horse Royal Canadian. Monica also was a member of the Canadian Forces Tai Kwan Do Team and held the Gold Medal for her division. SKAGE, Arthur Daniel (Dan)
October 27, 1957 - June 1, 2001
Dan passed away peacefully at home. Dan is survived by his loving wife Tracy and his good buddy Beau. His father Art, sisters Holly and Lori, his brother Rick, father-in-law Fred and sister-in-law Charlotte, also survives him. His mother Lucille predeceased Dan in 2000. SMITH
Tristan Robert Smith dearly loved son of Jim and Lori Smith of Eckville, Alberta was born at 1:11 a.m. on Sunday, May 20, 2001 at Red Deer Regional Hospital Health Care Centre. Tristan was a victim of umbilical cord strangulation and suffered severe asphyxia during his birth. He was transferred by STARS Air Ambulance to the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit at the Royal Alexandra Hospital in Edmonton later that morning. Tristan was not able to recover from his injuries and he passed away in the arms of his mommy and daddy at 1:40 a.m. on Wednesday, May 23, 2001 at the age of 3 days. Tristan was a most beautiful little boy who deeply touched the hearts of everyone who was blessed with the opportunity to meet him. Survived by his loving parents, Tristan will be forever loved, remembered, and missed by many special people, his grandparents, Joe and Jean Maki and Robert and Kay Smith; his great grannies, Myrtle Patapoff and Elvie Maki; his uncles and aunties, Steven (Leann) Maki, Garry (Joanne) Smith, Dale (Val) Smith, Phil (Teresa) Smith and Kathy (Bill) Webb; his cousins, Brendan, Derek and Christopher Maki, Jason (Stephanie) Smith, Colin and Keith Smith, Shelly, Kelly and Brennen Smith, and Jenna and Stephen Webb; as well as a wonderful extended family. Tristan was predeceased by a cousin Robert Smith, with whom he will be laid to rest. A private graveside service will be held. June Niome Spangler of Red Deer entered into rest on May 29, 2001 at the age of 77 years. She will be lovingly remembered by her husband Phil of Red Deer; children Phyllis (Lance) Martell of Quadra Islands, B.C., Bernice (Edwin) Crombie of Coddette, Saskatchewan, Bill (Gwen) Spangler of Red Deer and Doug (Wanda) Spangler of Williams Lake, B.C.; foster daughter Seana Corrigan of Red Deer; six grandchildren and two great grandchildren; sisters Norma Loran of Red Deer and Zelma (Tom) Kay of Lacombe; brother Dean (Bernice) Carlson of Vancouver, B.C.; sister-in-law Olive Martin of Abbotsford, B.C. and brother-in-law John Spangler of Calgary. SPEARS
Ellen May Spears of Bentley passed away May 23, 2001 in the Red Deer Hospital after a long battle with cancer. Born January 15, 1917 at Evarts, AB to Emily (Diggins) and Mel Chatwood, she was united in marriage to Ronald Spears at Bingley June 15, 1938. They moved to Bentley in 1954, where all six children grew up. Her family was very important to her and never further away than the telephone. She adored each new grandchild. For years Ellen was very active in the Lutheran Ladies Aid in Bentley. Gardening has always been a favorite hobby that she shared with daughter Lois. Knitting was a passion with Ellen leaving fine table cloths to be cherished by many. At age 72 Ellen took up bowling and enjoyed many years of bowling in Lacombe. In recent years she was very active quilting with a group of special friends. Mom was always a very willing helper, volunteering in so many ways and being there for anyone who needed her. Predeceased by her husband Ronald Spears in February of 1983 and two brothers Billy and Jim Chatwood, she leaves to mourn so many friends and family, three daughters Charlotte (Lawrence) Anderson of Bentley, Laurel (Ray) Vig of Vernon, B.C., Lois Spears of Edmonton; three sons, Jim (Kay) Spears of Vernon, B.C., John (Sharron) Spears of Sundre, AB, Dan (Joyce) Spears of Lacombe and special niece Shirley and Elwood Anderson of Bentley; also fifteen grandchildren and twelve great grandchildren as well as many nieces and nephews. She is further survived by brother Walter (June) Chatwood of Creston, B.C.; sisters-in-law Betty Chatwood of Belleville, Ontario and Thelma Wheeler in England. Funeral Services will be held from the Grace Lutheran Church on Saturday, May 26, 2001 at 2:00 p.m. Interment will follow in the Vig Cemetery. VAN SLYKE
Gilbert (Gib) Van Slyke of New Westminster, B.C. died May 14, 2001. Gib was born August 16, 1930 in Heisler, Alberta. He moved with his family to the Blindman Valley northwest of Red Deer in 1944. Gib completed his schooling at Aspelund School and at the High School in Red Deer. Gib farmed with his family and then worked in the Red Deer area, for many years at Cormack Auto Electric. He may be best known in the Red Deer area for his music, playing saxophone with Lou Doyle's orchestra. Gib moved to Vancouver in the early 70's where he married Pat (McIlwaine) Schmidt. He worked for many years at the Sears Store in Downtown Vancouver. Gib was predeceased by his wife Pat, his parents John and Ruth Van Slyke. He is survived by his daughter Lynda Schmidt (Craig) and granddaughters Stevie and Taylor of Vernon, B.C., his brothers Floyd (Ilene), Orville (Betty) of Red Deer area and Roger (Martha) of Edmonton, nieces, nephews, cousins and the Schmidt family. Family and friends will remember Gib for his wit, his humour, his cartoons and cards - for his picture of the world and the perspective and compassion he gave to each one, especially over a pipe and a really good Scotch. Gib will be cremated in Vancouver with a family celebration of his life to be held at a later date.
