STRAITON
George Robert Straiton, of Victoria, died peacefully in his sleep on July 18, 2001. George was born in the spring of 1926 and was the second son of Ernest Arthur and Ella Gertrude Straiton, residing at Straiton, British Columbia on Sumas Mountain. George's family lived in the Fraser Valley area throughout all his childhood. He moved to Red Deer, Alberta to attend high school at Canadian Nazarene College. While there, he met Jean Blanche Lynn of Rimbey, Alberta. They married in the summer of 1948, continuing to reside in Red Deer while George completed his education. In 1957, George accepted an assignment to pastor the newly established Nazarene Church in Beverly, Alberta, a town on the eastern outskirts of Edmonton. Later, George returned with his family to Red Deer to become the minister at the Nazarene Church in the West Park area. George took a break as pastor, during which time he worked at McLean Granite, as an artist designing the faces of gravestones, at the Richard Parsons Auxiliary Hospital and the Red Deer Hospital. He also worked at Michener Centre, graduating with honors in the mental deficiency nursing program offered by Alberta School Hospital (as it was named at that time). George returned to pastoring in the Nazarene Church, first at West Park and later to Mount Pearl, Newfoundland, Prince George and Port Alberni, British Columbia. During his time as layperson and clergy he was always very actively involved with missions work, serving as local and district presidents in the areas where he lived. Upon retirement, George and Jean moved to Victoria in 1991. There they continued to be involved in the two Nazarene churches in that city. One major highlight of that time period was traveling to Costa Rica with friends and a granddaughter on a work-and-witness missions trip. After the death of his wife in 1995, George continued with his traveling goals, accompanied by his children. He was able to visit many European countries as well as Australia, and traveled extensively across Canada visiting friends and family members from coast to coast. One favorite past-time during his retirement was to spend more time with his art work, particularly using watercolors to portray flowers. He also enjoyed his involvement with the Malahat Lions Club. In 1998, George married a long-time friend, Marion Ruth Munro (nee Strand) of Olds, Alberta. Their too brief time together consisted of numerous hours of companionship, particularly enjoying the seaside, playing various card and board games, enjoying live theatre, opera and choral presentations. In April, George was admitted into hospital, at Victoria General, with congestive heart failure problems. Although severely weakened, he had stabilized and was therefore transferred to Glengarry Hospital in June. George maintained keen awareness as to events and people around him. His sense of humour and fun were not diminished. George will be remembered for his love and care of people in his circle of influence, his artistic ability, his great gift of laughter, his love of music, poetry and sense of beauty and romance, his generous hospitality to people all across Canada and beyond, and his Christian servanthood. George was predeceased by his father, Arthur, his mother Ella, his step-father, Allan Austin and his first wife Jean. He will be greatly missed by his family; his wife, Ruth of Victoria; son Leigh and his wife Joyce of Meaford, Ontario; son Lynn and his wife Carol of Victoria; son Ted of Water Valley, Alberta; daughter Heather and her husband Steve Prendergast of Sundre, Alberta; step-daughter Laurel Regehr of Red Deer, Alberta; step-son Larry Munro and his wife Sandi of Bluffton, Alberta; and step-daughter Robin Munro of Olds, Alberta; grandchildren Stephanie and Charlie Walker, Ryan Straiton, Jen and Rob Snow, Bob Straiton, Joanna and Matthew Prendergast; step-grandchildren, Skyler and Juele Stach; great granddaughter, Kendra Walker. His brother Tom Straiton and his wife Sylvia of Surrey, British Columbia and his sister Rita and her husband Ross Baglole of Carbon, Alberta, numerous nieces, nephews and cousins, join with George's immediate family, his extended family and his many friends across North America in bearing this burden of grief. Friends and family will gather for a memorial service of remembrance, thanksgiving and praise at the West Park Church of the Nazarene, 3920-57 Avenue, Red Deer, Alberta on July 30, 2001 at 1:00 p.m. with George's pastor, Rev. Gary Bennett presiding. George's family gratefully decline donations of flowers. If friends desire, they may donate to the George Straiton Memorial Fund at the West Park Church of the Nazarene. These funds will support education scholarship and student-help endeavors at Nazarene University College in Calgary, Alberta. The family would like to thank the nursing staff and doctors of Victoria General Hospital and Glengarry Hospital, Richmond Unit, for their wonderful care. We greatly appreciate your contribution to making George's last days as comfortable as possible. Finally, Dad....thank you for your legacy to us.
