DAVIS

"Some people thought he was sleeping when they opened the door, His spirit had left his body to roam the hills evermore." - Slim Davis Mr. Lawrence Joseph "Slim" Davis died quietly in his home in Red Deer on Monday, April 15, 2002, he was 95. Slim was born in Carmangay in 1907. One of the last remaining Old Cowboys, Slim rode a saddle horse before he could walk and learned to rope a cow at an early age. His childhood playmates were Indian children and he grew to appreciate their spirituality and love of nature and all wild things. He believed that the spirit of every living thing will always be here with us. As a young man he may well have saved the lives of many an immigrant family who would otherwise have starved due to the harsh reality of our Canadian winters. Throughout his life Slim had many adventures and met many interesting people, these were the basis for his many stories and poems, and Slim was a wonderful storyteller, with his individual down to earth wisdom. Slim loved the outdoors and was happiest on a horse or at his horse camps in the west country. Over the years, Slim campaigned to preserve the west country, especially the forests, beavers and most recently the wild horses for future generations. He left us with enough unpublished stories and poems for at least two more books!! He even attracted the attention of national media, concerning the plight and mistreatment of Canadian wild horses. In recent years, Slim continued to write poems and has had four books of his poetry published, his writings will continue to be enjoyed by future generations. He will be greatly missed by his close companion, Ruby Swales and her sons, Peter and David and their families; he is survived by his children, Ardeana (Stan) Kind, Happy (Carol) Davis and Leata (Bruce) Murdock; his six grandchildren; five great grandchildren; his brother Don (Mary) Davis; his sister Laura Davis; his children's mother Olive and numerous nieces and nephews. Relatives and friends are invited to come and share their memories with the family at the Eventide Funeral Chapel, Red Deer on Thursday evening, between the hours of 7:00 and 9:00 p.m. A celebration of Slim's life will be held at the Sunnybrook United Church, 12 Stanton Street, Red Deer on Friday, April 19, 2002 at 11:00 a.m. with the Reverend Mark Green officiating. If desired, donations to the Medicine River Wild Life Rehabilitation Centre, Box 115, Spruce View, Alberta, T0M 1B0 or to the Heart and Stroke Foundation of Alberta and N.W.T., #101, 5208-53rd Avenue, Red Deer, T4N 5K2.
