FISHER-Helen C.E. (nee Pocock)
1915-2002

Helen Fisher, beloved wife of Gerry Fisher of Sylvan Lake, passed away at the Calgary General Hospital (Peter Lougheed Centre) on Friday, March 22, 2002. Born October 1, 1915 at Wetaskiwin, Helen was raised in several rural Alberta communities where her father had Ministerial postings. Helen knew from a very early age that she wanted to be a nurse and realized this dream when she graduated from the Calgary General Hospital School of Nursing in 1938. After working in Lethbridge, Helen moved to New Brigden in 1939 as a District Nurse. Her many medical calls at all hours of the day and night throughout New Brigden, Sedalia, Esther and Hemaruka endeared her to many of Alberta's pioneer families. Helen fell in love with a gentleman from Sedalia and commenced a lifelong adventure with Gerry Fisher on July 9,1941 in Oyen. Following the war, Helen and Gerry moved to Sylvan Lake, where she provided emergency medical services for the community for many years. She continued with her passion for family health with service on the Alberta Health Facilities Visitors Committee and the Board of the Red Deer General Hospital. Helen was a prominent and valued member of the Sylvan Lake community who honoured her as a Citizen of the Year in 1984. Helen loved music and was active with the Memorial Presbyterian Church Choir for many years. She enjoyed a good laugh and was known for the occasional prank. Helen's greatest love was Gerry Fisher and their family. Helen and Gerry enjoyed a wonderful life together and celebrated their lifelong committment to each other with their 60th wedding anniversary last year. Besides her very loving husband, Helen is survived by five children, Dale (Carol), Allan (Lynn), Lorne (Rosivy), Dianne (Hal), and Susan (Gene); sisters-in-law, Jean Pocock and Ruth Pocock and special sister Auntie Mary. Helen was the very loved grandmother of Chris, Danielle, Kyla, Rosabel, Natalia, Paul, Sarah, Bronwyn and Brody. Helen was predeceased by her parents, The Rev. and Mrs. C.E.A. Pocock and two brothers, Masten and Ralph Pocock. A celebration of Mom's life will be held Thursday, March 28, 2002, at 2 p.m., at the Memorial Presbyterian Church in Sylvan Lake. In lieu of flowers, memorial tributes may be made directly to the Extended Care Society at Sylvan Lake, Box 9004, Sylvan Lake, AB, T0M 1Z0 or to the Calgary General Hospital Alumni Bursary, c/o Peter Lougheed Centre, 3500-26th Avenue NE, Calgary, AB, T1Y 6P8.

GARRIES

Olive Amy Garries was born March 28th, 1920 in Armstrong, B.C. She passed away 10 days short of her 82nd birthday, on March 18, 2002 at the Bentley Care Centre. She worked at Garries' Hardware for years and really enjoyed the people she met. She loved camping at her beloved "Two O'Clock Creek". She cherished her grandchildren and great grandchildren. She always said if she would have known they were so much fun she would have had them first. She is survived by her beloved husband, Gordon of Bentley; sons, Rick (Leanne) of Bentley, Dean (Diana) of Edmonton; seven grandchildren and eight great grandchildren. She also leaves to mourn her loss four sisters and one brother. At her request the will be no funeral service. A private family memorial service will be held at a later date. If friends desire, memorial contributions may be made to the Bentley Care Centre, Box 30, Bentley, AB T0C 0J0. GIBBON

James M. was born September 18, 1940 in Innisfail to Herb and Marion Gibbon. Jim passed away Monday, April 8, 2002 at the Red Deer Regional Hospital at the age of 60 years. Jim is survived by his wife Eileen, two stepchildren, Jim Chamberlain (Cheri) and Bonnie Chamberlain. Two daughters, Tracy Lebre and Jeannette Gibbon and eight grandchildren. He is also survived by four brothers, Ross (Karen), George, Bob and Brian (Lorna), two sisters, Helen Jochem (Dave) and Sandra Gibbon and numerous nieces and nephews. The family of Jim's would like to invite you to share with them, special memories of Jim and many adventures in his lifetime. This gathering will be held at the Orange Hall, 5204 49 Ave. Innisfail on Saturday, April 13, 2002 from 2:00 to 4:00 p.m. If friends so desire, memorial tributes may be made to the Canadian Cancer Society, Red Deer Unit, 4730A Ross Street, Red Deer, Alberta, T4N 1X2. GROVES

Mr. Lawrence Royden Groves, beloved husband of Marlene of Red Deer, passed away at the Red Deer Regional Hospital, on April 5, 2002. He was born on April 6, 1932 in Wetaskiwin, Alberta. Besides his wife Marlene, Lawrence is survived by his two sons; Curtis Groves, Robert (Kim) Groves, his daughter, Shannon (Scott) Finch and seven grandchildren. Lawrence is also survived by his two sisters, Myrna Litvak and Leatrice (Ralph) Hoffman. Lawrence is predeceased by his two sons, Cameron and Kevin; his parents, Robert and Constance and his two brothers, Donald and Gerald. Funeral services will be held at Eventide Funeral Chapels on Wednesday, April 10, 2002 at 2:00 p.m. Interment to follow at Alto-Reste Cemetery, Red Deer, Alberta. HAGG, LARRY CHARLES

Larry Charles Hagg died in Calgary on April 14, 2002 at the age of 82, after suffering from Parkinson's disease. Larry was born on the family farm at Champion, Alberta on February 2, 1920 to Oscar and Alma Hagg. He served as a pilot in the RCAF during WWII and was shot down over the English Channel in 1944. He reenlisted in 1952 and continued his flying through numerous postings until he retired in Red Deer in 1964. There, Larry embarked on a second career working as a probation officer and in family court, retiring again in 1985. He never lost his boyhood love for baseball and other sports and, as an adult, continued to play "ball" and also enjoyed golf and bridge. As a father, he coached and attended hundreds of his children's games. As well, he was involved with Boy Scouts and Air Cadets. Larry was married for 55 years to Joyce Elaine (Christensen), who has recently moved from Red Deer to Calgary. They have four children: John (Kristin), Karen, and Tim (Karin), all of Calgary and Dan (Toni) of Edmonton; as well as eleven grandchildren. He also leaves one sister, Jean Vitringa, and his mother-in-law, Effie Christensen, both of Calgary. Larry received extraordinary loving care at both Unit 57 Rockyview Hospital and Unit 3 Carewest Sarcee. Memorial donations to Carewest or any hospice or eldercare facility would be appreciated. A Memorial Service will be held at Southminster United Church, 3818 - 14A St. SW, Calgary (phone: 243-6268) on Friday, April 19, at 2:00 pm. HORN

Fredrick William "Fred" Horn of Red Deer passed away peacefully at home on March 28, 2002 at the age of 90 after a long and full life. He was born at the Red Deer Hospital on December 3, 1911, to Daniel and Maude Horn. Fred's memory will be cherished by his loving wife of 62 years, Gladys; two children, Gail (Jim) Krause of Red Deer and Dan (Linda) Horn of Oliver, B.C.; grandchildren Tim (Kelly) Brigley of Toronto, Lori Brigley of Calgary, Carmen (J.J.) Horn of Red Deer, Travis and Stephanie Horn of Oliver; three great grandchildren, Morgan, Kieran and Sean of Red Deer. Fred is also survived by two sisters, Miriam Hutchinson of Edmonton and Lorna Chesney of Gull Lake. Fred was predeceased by his father, mother and older brother George. Fred grew up and lived in Red Deer his whole life with the exception of his enlistment in the Royal Canadian Army during the Second World War. He was on the first ship sent from Canada and was posted in Great Britain and northern Europe until the end of the War. Fred had an entrepreneurial spirit which led him into many business ventures in Red Deer and area. Later in life, one of his greatest joys was being on his farm, in the Hillsdown area, tending to the needs of the cattle. His life was touched by an endless dedication to his city of birth. Fred was The Charter Chairman of the Red Deer Alberta Motor Association and was instrumental in the formation of AMA insurance, he served one term as a City of Red Deer Alderman; was Charter President of the Red Deer Kiwanis Club, endeavoring to remain an active member until his passing. He recently was honoured with 50 years perfect attendance. Fred was past Chairman of the board of directors for the Twilight Homes Foundation, and as fundraising chairman spearheaded the building of the first old folks lodge in Alberta. He is also a Past Lieutenant Governor of Division 7. In 1996, he was the only Canadian awarded with the American Association of State and Local History Award for his work in promoting and preserving the history of the Red Deer area. He assisted in the Central Alberta Pioneers and Old Timers' Association, The Red Deer and District Archives and the founding of the Red Deer and District Museum where he contributed both artifacts and time. He was the leading volunteer in the restoration of Fort Normandeau, with the theatre at the Normandeau Interpretive Centre being named the Fred Horn Theatre in his honour. In 1998 he received the Mayor's Recognition Award for Citizenship. Fred and Gladys retired early to Mesa, Arizona for the winter months and Fred took up golf and was instrumental in setting up the popular annual Red Deer picnic in Mesa. In 1988 he was proud of a hole-in-one at the Balmoral Golf Course. There will be a memorial service for Fred held at the Gaetz Memorial United Church on Tuesday, April 2, 2002 at 2:00 p.m. with Leanne Hall officiating. In lieu of flowers, donations in Fred's name may be made to the Red Deer Hospice Society, Box 22015, Red Deer, Alberta, T4N 6X4.

HUNTLEY, Vernon Richard
1934-2002

Vern passed away peacefully at Red Deer Hospital on the evening of March 6, 2002 at the age of 67 years. Born in Elkhorn, MB. Vern pursued a career traveling the World as an Oilman which brought him great joy and respect. He will be deeply missed by his family and friends and is survived by his sons, Robert and Blaine Huntley, Blaine's wife Carla and their 2 daughters, Kennedy and Lauren. He is also survived by his brothers, Don, John and Keith; his sister Marlene Boychuk and their respective families. Vern was predeceased by his brother Robert and his mother and father. Friends and family are invited to remember Vern at the First Alliance Church on 1201 Glenmore Trail S.W. Calgary on Saturday, April 6, 2002 at 1:00 p.m. In lieu of flowers, a memorial tribute may be made directly to STARS Air Ambulance at 1441 Aviation Park N.E. Box 570, Calgary, AB, T2E 8M7.

KINNEAR

Mr. Fred James Kinnear of Red Deer passed away peacefully at The Dr. Richard Parsons Care Centre, Red Deer on Tuesday, April 2, 2002 at the age of 85 years. Fred received his early education at Moose Pond School, in southern Saskatchewan. As a young man he worked in the tobacco fields in Ontario. In 1941 he joined the Royal Canadian Air Force, and during WWII, served overseas in England, France, Germany and Holland, during this time he acquired his electricians papers and worked as an aircraft electrician. In 1945 when the war ended, Fred came home. He purchased a farm south of Willows, Saskatchewan in 1947. On June 12, 1950, Fred was united in marriage to Doris Reid. Fred was instrumental in getting rural power to many farms in southern Saskatchewan. In 1967 the farm was sold and the family moved to Red Deer, where Fred worked in the farm department at MacLeods Store. In 1972 they moved to Kelowna and in 1978 returned to Red Deer where he enjoyed daily golf games, as a matter of fact, Fred was a member of the hole in on club, four times!!! Family times and frequent card games were also treasured. Fred was active as Worthy Patron of Order Of Eastern Star. He was also a life member of St. John's Masonic Lodge, Royal Arch Masons, Preceptory and WA WA Shrine Temple, at Regina, Saskatchewan, as well as Royal Canadian Legion. He loved sports, especially baseball, golf and horseshoes. He enjoyed music, and even learned to play the banjo by ear. He and wife Doris and two other friends played for many dances for weddings and other celebrations. Fred and Doris enjoyed seventeen winters at Mesa, Arizona. As well as his wife, Doris, he is survived by his daughter, Beverly and her husband Stan Flinn of Red Deer; his son, Bob Kinnear and his wife Carol of Red Deer; his three granddaughters, Tanya (Ranjit) Mullakady of Red Deer, Candice Kinnear and Kari Kinnear of Red Deer; his grandson, Winston Flinn of Red Deer; and his great granddaughter, Simran Mullakady; his brother, Delbert (Leona) Kinnear of Arizona; sister-in-law, Elfi Kinnear of Vancouver; and numerous nieces and nephews. Fred was predeceased by his parents, Robert and June Kinnear; brothers, Robert and George; sisters-in-law, Violet Kinnear and Gladys Reid; brothers-in-law, Elvin and Gerald Reid; and special niece, Jo-anne Reid. A celebration of Fred Kinnear's life will be held at The Eventide Funeral Chapel, Red Deer, on Friday, April 5, 2002 at 11:00 a.m. Interment of urn at Verwood, Saskatchewan. If desired, donations may be made to Red Deer Regional Hospital Recreational Department, Box 5030, Red Deer. T4N 6R2.
