Mrs. Ruth Schmidt of Lacombe, Alberta passed away on March 19, 2002 at the age of 81 years. Ruth is survived by her son Eric and his wife Jackie of Fort Saskatchewan, AB., 2 grandsons; Lee (Sherri) of Edmonton and Kevin (Sharon) also of Edmonton, 2 great granddaughters Jaimie and Megan, as well as 4 brothers and 1 sister. SCOTT, Robert (Bob) McAllister
On April 6, 2002, Mr. Robert McAllister Scott of Lacombe passed away at the age of 92. Survived by his loving wife Louise; two sons, Robert (Linda) and Mitchell (Heather), two grandchildren; Jennifer and Ron and eight step grandchildren, Cathy, Susan, Linda, Randy, Dagmar, Mathew, Craig and Alanna and ten great grandchildren; also his brother Mitchell and his sister Rachael. Predeceased by his parents George and Helen Scott. A Memorial Service will be held Sunday, April 14, 2002 at 2:00 p.m. at Evergreen Funeral Chapel at 16204 Fort Road, Edmonton. Mrs. Martha Adella "Dell" Scutchings of Red Deer passed away at the Red Deer Regional Hospital on Thursday, April 4, 2002. Dell was born on September 12, 1903 at Holmfield, Manitoba, later moving to the Leslie and Foam Lake area where she received her schooling. During this time she also met Bill, and the couple were united in marriage. Bill was employed in the oil patch and they moved frequently, enjoying Montana where Chester was born, Alberta, and Saskatchewan where Lorraine was born. Dell enjoyed cooking, crocheting and belonged to many organizations. Her last few years were spent in Sylvan Lake and Red Deer. Dell's outgoing personality and wit made her many friends. Dell also enjoyed music and listening to the many bands her grandchildren were in over the years. Dell is truly loved and will be missed by her son, Chester (Eunice) and daughter, Lorraine (Gordon); her five grandchildren, Doug (Jan), Bonny (Lee), Judy (Mel), Debra (Gillds), and Ron (Loretta); her twelve great grandchildren and three great great grandchildren who will always remember her fondly as Dell, MaMa Dell and Queen of The Onions. Dell was predeceased by her husband Bill, her parents, five sisters and one brother. A celebration of Dell Scutching's life will be held at the Eventide Funeral Chapel, Red Deer, on Tuesday, April 9, 2002 at 1:00 p.m. Interment will take place in the Stettler Cemetery. SMETHURST
Mr. George Harry Smethurst, beloved husband of Mrs. Doris Smethurst of Medicine Hat, passed away peacefully on Monday, April 8, 2002 at the age of 65 years. George also leaves to cherish his memory one son, David Harry George (Heidi) Smethurst of Calgary and their children, Erika, Evan, Ryan and Jill; one daughter, Susan Jean (Charles) Reichart of Medicine Hat and their children, Adam, Ashley and Alexander; one sister, Patricia Peterson of Caladonia, Minnesota; as well as numerous nieces and nephews. George was predeceased by his parents, George and Rita Smethurst and one brother, Robert Smethurst. George was born in Acton, Ontario. He later joined the Royal Canadian Regiment in 1954 in which he served twenty-five years of distinguished service. His military career took him overseas to Europe, two peacekeeping tours in Cyprus and numerous training duties throughout Canada. His career with the Federal Government continued with the Correctional Service of Canada in which he served twenty years. Family was the center of George's life; he will be remembered as a loving husband, father and a very special grandfather. Even in his retirement years, George was active with golf, traveling and numerous athletic endeavors with his seven grandchildren. Always the eternal optimist, George will be remembered for his good nature to his family, friends and neighbors. The Funeral Service will be held in VICTORY LUTHERAN CHURCH, 2793 Southview Drive SE, Medicine Hat, Alberta, on Friday, April 12, 2002 at 1:00 p.m. with Pastor Loren Hosfield officiating. Allen Douglas Stiles of the Rimbey area, passed away on March 14, 2002 at his home after a three year battle with a work related injury at the age of 40 years. Allen was born in Innisfail, Alberta on August 9, 1961 where he was raised and attended school until 1975 then moved to Ponoka and finished his schooling. Allen played Dynamite hockey, and was coached by Vince Tedeschini, Hoppy Hopkins, Larry Reid and then on to Ponoka and played with the Midgets coached by Jim Smith. His interest never stopped with hockey, he loved to play broomball, football, curling and basketball as well. His life revolved around sports of some kind. The teachers always said if history would have been as good as hockey players and football players names, he would have gone far. His life always revolved around sports of some kind. He worked at a number of jobs from driving truck, labour foreman and pipe-fitter, rig-hand on the oil rigs and gravel crusher where he received a work related injury. He is survived by his loving parents John and Donna Stiles of Rimbey; a sister Debbie and her daughters, Alicia, Ileana Tschabold of Lacombe; 2 brothers Bill of Rimbey and Ken of Vermillion; as well as numerous aunts, uncles and cousins from B.C. to Ontario. He was predeceased by his maternal grandparents, William and Sarha Stiles of Brussels, Ontario and his paternal grandparents, George and Lena Atkinson of Innisfail. Mr. Jon Richard Thompson of Red Deer passed away at the Red Deer Regional Hospital on Friday, March 29, 2002 at the age of 68 years. Jon enjoyed fishing and spending time with his grandchildren. He is survived by his wife of 47 years, Dorothy; his sons, Robert "Bert" (Barbara) and Roger, all of Red Deer; his daughters, Sandra of Edmonton and Susan (Doug) Churchill of Lacombe and five grandchildren. Jon was predeceased by one son, Richard in 1975. Marie Thompson-Bruce, beloved wife of Archie Bruce of Red Deer passed away peacefully with family at her side on Wednesday, March 20, 2002 at the age of 85 years. Marie was born on February 19, 1917 at Delburne, Alberta. She graduated from Red Deer High School and went to Banff School of Fine Arts on a scholarship. She later attended Technical School in Edmonton and received a certificate in Home Economics. Marie met Frank Thompson on June 9, 1937 and married him two years later to the day. They shared 52 years of marriage and owned and operated numerous businesses in Red Deer and a farm at Rainy Creek and one at Eckville. Marie is survived by two children; a son Gary and wife Donna and their two daughters Amy and Erin, along with a daughter Mary Gayle and her husband Ron and their four children, Julie, Marlo, Dixie and Andrew. She is also survived by her sister Eva Hornbostel and sister-in-law Kay Arb of Red Deer as well as several nieces and nephews. Marie was friend, confidante and counsellor to family members and friends throughout her life. She was truly devoted to her family. She always had time to chat with her grandchildren and eagerly awaited their regular visits to hear of their activities. With their help and the support of a caring Home Care staff over the past few years, it has been possible for her to stay in her home, where she loved to be. Marie was active in the Red Deer community and was involved in many aspects of Gaetz United Church including UCW, Sunday School, Camp Kasota and the Board; and she also was a member of the Red Deer Archives Committee. She was predeceased by her husband Frank in 1991 and brother Alvin. In May 2001 she married long-time friend Archie Bruce. They have truly enjoyed this past year together and shared many special moments.
