VERONA ESTHER BODDY
Verona Esther McGonigal was born January 13, 1915 to Fred McGonigal and Esther Garrett at Botha, Alberta. She died in her sleep at Woodlea Cottage, Red Deer on Wednesday, March 27, 2002. Verona Boddy leaves to mourn children and siblings, daughter Sharon Boddy (and Dave Anderson) of Sylvan Lake, sons Larrie (and Eleanor) of Edmonton, Dale (and Joanne) of Red Deer, and Gregg (and Barbara) of Coquitlam, B.C.; grandchildren Aaron (and Monica and their children Devon and Colten), Cody (and Patricia and their children Darien and Sydney), Christopher (and Rachel and daughter Martina), Geoffrey and Alexandra, Jodi (and Adam), Cory (and Gill), Chad, Jared and Brandon; her brother, Willis McGonigal of Blackfalds; sisters Gwen Johnston of Wetaskiwin, and Patricia (and Norm) Sim of Lacombe; sister-in-law, Dorothy McGonigal of Alix, and numerous nieces, nephews and cousins. Her husband Noyce in 1987, her brother, Eldon, and parents predeceased her. Verona enjoyed her youth in Alix, playing sports and doing farm work. On the recommendation of a local priest, ignoring her Protestant background, she was accepted into the Misercordia School of Nursing in Edmonton. She talked about the challenges of training - hard work, harder expectations and all with no remuneration. She graduated in 1936, and took employment at Ponoka Mental Hospital. Verona wed Noyce Boddy in 1938. Farming was challenging but the work was familiar and life was good. Larrie was born, then Sharon, Dale and Gregg. The family moved to Ponoka in 1947 and everyone settled into life in town. Verona resumed her nursing career. As her family grew, part-time roles turned to full-time positions. She began work with Wetoka Health Unit enjoying her contact with schools and students. Eventually this led to a similar position at Alberta Hospital, Ponoka. As retirement approached, they moved back to the farm where they resided until Noyce died in 1987. Selling the farm and moving into Red Deer, Verona enjoyed Red Deer and her condo but never really got over Noyce's death. She loved good meals and family gatherings, current events and sports. In failing health and with considerable unease Verona moved to Woodlea Cottage. She fell in with her new community and lived well until her passing. A celebration of Verona Boddy's life will be held at Eventide Funeral Chapel, Red Deer, on Saturday, March 30, 2002 at 3:00 p.m. with The Reverend John Yoos officiating. In lieu of flowers, donations in Verona's name to the Canadian Cancer Society, Red Deer Unit, 4730A Ross Street, Red Deer, AB, T4N 1X2, or charity of your choice would be appreciated.
