SCREEN, GWENDOLYN (PENNOCK)
Mrs. Gwen Screen of Trochu, formerly of Elnora, passed away peacefully on March 20, 2003 at the age of 92 years. Gwen, the eldest of 6 children, born to Fred and Sara Peacock, was born at home near the river, East of Elnora on December 30, 1910. She was raised in the Elnora area and took her schooling at Elnora. On May 12, 1937, Gwen married William Screen and they lived on a farm close to the Arthurville Church. They were blessed with two children; Wilfred Albert and Deborah Eileen. Gwen was a busy farmer's wife with selling cream and eggs, tending a large garden, canning meat and garden produce, picking black currants by the bucket, and making her famous marmalade jam. Gwen had two other favorite hobbies: collecting 100 spoons and crocheting table cloths for each of her granddaughters. Gwen is survived by her two children: Wilfred (Donna) of Elnora, Debbie Jensen of Trochu, 7 grandchildren, 16 great grandchildren and 2 sisters-in-law Bernice Pennock of Elnora and Eileen Pennock of Red Deer. She was predeceased by her husband Bill in 1966; her granddaughter Allison in 1975, son-in-law Murray in 1998, her sister Marjorie and brothers: Ernest, Jack, Kenneth and Maurice. The Funeral Service for the late Mrs. Gwen Screen will be held from the Elnora Community Hall on Tuesday, March 25, 2003 at 2:00 p.m. with Reverend Inez Hannett officiating. Interment will follow in the Arthurville Cemetery. As an expression of sympathy, memorial contributions may be made to the St. Mary's Health Care Center or the Arthurville Church. ARTHUR ROBERT SMITH
April 15, 1918 - March 23, 2003
After a brief hospitalization, including dialysis treatment, Art went to be with His Lord. He is survived by his loving wife and companion of 60 years, Elizabeth (nee Andres), son, Raymond (Elaine), daughter, Pat (Ron) Lukasiewich, son, Don (Charlotte), his loving grandchildren Kevin (Lisa), Mark, Debra (Brian), Jennifer (Peter), Michael, Sheila (Troy), Laura (Jon), Arthur (Amanda), Gregory (Kimberly), Deana, Jenean (Wade), Matthew, and great grandchildren, Katelan, Mackenzie, Viola, Wiley and Braeden, along with numerous nieces, nephews, god children and other extended family and friends. Art lived all of his 85 years in Delburne, except for a 6 year service with the RCAF, many of those in dedicated service to the community through the family hardware business and as mayor and councilor. He was never happier than when he was working with Elizabeth in the greenhouse or in his garden. Together, they spent many joyful hours enjoying the fruits of their labors in their beautiful peaceful yard. Art was predeceased by his parents, Ray and Katherine, his brother, Lloyd (Shadow) and sister, Kay. His family want to express their sincere gratitude to the loyal and caring, family, friends and neighbors who saw Art and Elizabeth through many trials in these later years. SORSDAHL Dorothy Joyce (Day)
Joyce's children and family sadly announce the passing of their mother on March 17, 2003 at Red Deer Regional Hospital, the result of a stroke the previous Thursday. Born near Coronach, SK., on July 28, 1921 as the youngest child of eight. Joyce had six sisters and one brother. Nylene Welsh, Brampton, ON, is Joyce's only surviving sibling. Joyce is also survived by her four children, Keith (Linda) of Red Deer, Karen Coutts of Calgary, Arlyn (Johanna) and Lynn (Anne) of Red Deer. There are seven grandchildren and four great grandchildren. Joyce married Aubrey Raymond Sorsdahl of Coronach in 1943 where they took over the family farm. Due to Aubrey's health concerns the entire family moved to Red Deer, AB in 1961. During the school year of 1964, our family moved to Erskine, AB. Joyce ran the cafe and Aubrey operated the Royalite station. The family returned to Red Deer in 1965. Joyce worked for the Eaton's store at both locations and spent many hours with her hobbies of curling, bowling, golf and lawn bowling. As a member of Gaetz United Church, she enjoyed helping others. Family gatherings were always a priority and a joy for her. Joyce requested that donations, in lieu of flowers be given to either the Stroke Fund or Cancer Fund. Funeral Services will be held on Monday, March 24, 2003 at Gaetz United Church at 1:00 p.m. with Interment preceding the service at 11:30 a.m. at Alto Reste Cemetery.
STEPHANSON, FRETHA "DOLLY"
Fretha "Dolly" Stephanson entered into her final rest on Monday, March 24, 2003 at the age of 90 years. She was born Fretha Stewart on July 11, 1912, in Calgary, AB, to Thomas and Margret (Hunford) Stewart. Dolly was raised on the family homestead at Three Hills, attending Bethel School and then the Three Hills High School. After high school, Dolly took a secretarial course and worked at an insurance office in Three Hills. At the start of W.W.II, when jobs became scarce, Dolly moved into Calgary to find secretarial work there. Dolly met Cecil Stephanson while visiting her older sister, Hazel Johannson at Markerville. Dolly and Cecil were married in Calgary on January 10, 1942, in a double wedding, where her sister, Margaret, was also married to Cecil's cousin, Edwin. Dolly and Cecil built their home on his farm near Markerville, AB, where they raised their three sons; Stewart, Kenneth, and Ronald. Dolly helped Cecil with the farm work, as well as with the "R.R.1, Markerville", mail courier route. She was a good helpmate, a very caring mother, and a good friend and neighbour. The coffeepot was always on at their house. Dolly was always very community-minded. She served as secretary of the Hola Community Society, as President and also Sec-Treas of the Pleasant Valley Ladies Club, as President of Vonin, joined the Good Neighbour Club, and was Secretary of the Stephan G. Stephansson Society for 10 years and was honored with a Life Membership. She was also a life member of the Innisfail Drop-in, the Golden West Drop-in and a member of the Innisfail Serenaders. Fretha "Dolly" Stephanson is survived by her sons: Stewart (Jean) of Rocky Mountain House, Ken of Markerville, and Ron (Wendy) of Markerville, as well as by her granddaughters, Bonnie (Larry) of Ottawa, and Joy (Chris) of Edmonton, parents of her great-grandson, Lucas. She is also survived by one brother-in-law; Edwin Stephenson. She was predeceased by her husband Cecil; by her parents, Thomas and Margret Stewart; by her brothers, George and Edward; by her sisters, Hazel, Margaret and Bertha; as well as by all her sisters and brothers-in-law, except Edwin. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Rosefield Centre, Innisfail. Funeral Service for the late Dolly Stephanson will be held Saturday, March 29, 2003 at 2:00 p.m. at the Metcalf Funeral Chapel with Reverend John Yoos, Interment at the Christinnson-Stephanson Cemetery.
