SLINGER, Harold
Harold Leroy Slinger, of Red Deer, passed away Saturday, July 26, 2003 after a brief illness. Born near Delburne on August 8, 1913, he grew and helped his parents Riley and Lottie Slinger on the family farm. In 1941 he married Della Phelps and they spent their first five years on a mixed grain farm. In addition to their own farm work, Harold threshed for neighbours. They began looking for land in the Stettler area, and were also shown the Hardware Store in Erskine. This appealed to them both, and in 1947 they became retailers. Seven enjoyable and successful years followed. Always sports-minded, Harold played baseball and curled. He joined the I.O.O.F., and remained a member until his passing. In the spring of 1953, they sold the Hardware, and moved to Trochu, where they bought the Lane Theatre. Harold was elected to Town Council and greatly enjoyed the challenges which arose. Sports still played an important role in his life, and golf added to his enjoyment. Retiring to Red Deer in 1970, Harold took up horse-shoes, and continued to curl and golf, until his health forced him to assume the role of spectator. He remained very involved in the Oddfellows Lodge, going through the chairs of the subordinate Lodge, then in 1970 he was elected to the Grand Lodge. In 1973, he completed his term as Grand Master of Alberta. He also served on the Session Board of Gaetz Memorial United Church, and was a life member of the Red Deer Museum. Harold leaves to mourn his loving wife of 61 years, Della; son, Larry of Rimbey; and daughter, Lynn (Ken) Brown of Bentley, 3 grandchildren - Cory, Devin, and Cheryl, step-grandchildren, and great-grandchildren. He will also be sadly missed by his sister-in-law, Phyllis Rode, numerous relatives and many friends. Predeceased by his parents, a brother and sister, he is survived by one brother, Edward. A Celebration of Harold's Life will be held at Gaetz Memorial United Church, 4758 Ross Street, Red Deer on Tuesday, July 29, 2003 at 2:00 p.m. with The Reverend Fran Hare officiating.
