Helen Butler passed away peacefully at the Red Deer Nursing Home on Saturday, July 12, 2003 at the age of 87 years. The staff and residents of the nursing home have been very caring and wonderful friends to our mother over the past 12 years. Helen was born at the Florence Crittien Home in Sioux City, Iowa on September 27, 1915, awaiting the arrival of her adoptive parents, Edna and Dr. George Hodam, formerly of Ponca, Nebraska. Helen and her adoptive brother Gale were raised at Strome, Alberta where their parents homesteaded. Helen married Donald James Butler of Spean Bridge, Invernesshire, Scotland in 1936. They were blessed with twins, Sandra and George in 1941. They all moved to Edmonton during the war, settling in the Bonnie Doon district. Helen was a friend and a helper to everyone in the community every moment she lived in Bonnie Doon. In 1977, Helen was delighted to meet her birth mother and nine full-blooded brothers and sisters in South Dakota. They have all become very close and loving friends over the past 25 years. Helen was predeceased by her husband Donald in 1978, her parents Edna and Doc Hodam, her brother Gale and her birth mother and birth father, Dora and Carl Kretzchmar. Helen is survived by her son and family, George, Pat, Brian Butler and Lesley, Rob, Jessica and Aileen Holcraft of Edmonton and her daughter and family, Sandra and Fred Ladwig, Tricia, Jody, Barry and Bradley Pope, Fred Jr., Norma-Jean, Freddie and Derick Ladwig and Sue, Dean, Sierra and Hailey Hocken of Red Deer. Funeral Services will be held at Hainstock Funeral Chapel at 9810-34 Avenue, Edmonton, on Wednesday, July 16th at 1:00 p.m. Interment will take place at Evergreen Memorial Gardens, 16102 Fort Road.
CANN, Paul
Paul Cann passed away in a tragic accident near Bowden on July 13, 2003 at the age of 55 years. Paul is survived by his wife, Catherine Cann of Bowden; three daughters, Jennifer (Jared) McNicol of Calgary, Mary Cann (Lyle Seaby) of Edmonton, and Laura Cann of Calgary; Granddaughter, Cailyn McNicol of Calgary; mother, Isabel Cann of Arcola, Saskatchewan; sister, Linda (Len) Grace of Brooks; brother, Bill (Pat) Cann of Arcola, Saskatchewan; and numerous nieces and nephews, whom he loved very much. Paul was predeceased by his father, Elmer. Funeral Services will be held on Thursday, July 17 at 2:00 PM at the Mountain View Funeral Chapel, Olds (5226 46 Street). On June 30, 2003 Opal Carter of Wetaskiwin, formerly of Red Deer, passed away at the age of 83 years. Opal is survived by her loving family; children, Doreen (Robert) Irving, Leo (Faye) Carter and Louise (Gordon) Collins; grandchildren, Doug, Terri, Norma, Lyla, Leonard, Dale, Kerry and Tracie; several adoring great grandchildren and a great-great granddaughter, Alexis as well as her brothers, Sandy (Ann) and Norman (Lil) Ryall. Opal was predeceased by her husband, Leo and by her brother, Raymond Ryall. Respecting Opal's wishes, cremation has taken place and a private family service was held from Baker Funeral Chapel, Wetaskiwin on Friday, July 4, 2003. Mrs. Floy Delores Challand of Rimbey, Alberta passed away in the Red Deer Regional Hospital on Friday, July 25, 2003 at the age of 83 years. Floy was born on October 4, 1919 at Medicine Hat, Alberta. Her marriage vows were taken on May 9, 1952 to Glenn Challand of Leedale. They lived on the farm where Cal, Elaine, Connie and Rod were born. In 1959 Floy and Glenn moved their young family to the farm southwest of Rimbey. Shortly after they moved to Rimbey, their youngest daughter Gloria arrived. They continued to farm until June of 2000 when Glenn's health would not allow him to continue. Predeceased by her loving husband Glenn on September 23, 2000, Floy is survived by her loving children, Cal (Betty) Challand of Rimbey, Elaine Challand of Red Deer, Connie (Brian) Resta of Westerose, Rod (Wendy) Challand of Rimbey, Gloria (Ron) Keessar of Parkland Beach; ten grand-children; three great grandchildren. Funeral services will be held from the Church of the Nazarene in Rimbey, Alberta on Thursday, July 31, 2003 at 2:00 p.m. with Reverend David MacMillan and Reverend Wayne McCrackin officiating. CORRIN, John "Peter"
Born November 19, 1939, passed away peacefully at home in Calgary with his family by his side on July 6, 2003. As with all challenges, he faced his cancer with courage, dignity and humor. Beloved husband and best friend of Elaine. Deeply missed by his children and grandchildren, Jane, (Ahsan, Alexander and Brennan Chaudry) of Calgary; John, (Tracey, Mackenzie, Jed and Bryce Corrin) of Red Deer, and Simon Corrin of Washington, D.C. Survived by his sister Jean in the Isle of Man; predeceased by his brother Geoff. Peter was born in the Isle of Man, Great Britain, and immigrated to Red Deer, Alberta with his family in 1978 and moved to Calgary in 2002. He was well known in the home building industry for his highly crafted work as a bricklayer and stonemason. He will be remembered not only for his legacy of work, but also for his quick wit and insightful knowledge on almost any subject. He had many trophies and medals reflecting his athletic accomplishments in motorbike trials riding in the Isle of Man and as a runner in Alberta. He had many happy memories of hiking and running with his very good friends Tony Morris and Bill Young of Red Deer. We affectionately called him our "Crocodile Dundee", for his adventurous and practical nature and ability to charm anyone or anything. Janet M. Curr of Red Deer passed away peacefully at the Valley Park Manor on Sunday, June 29, 2003 at the age of 91 years. Janet was born in Red Deer on September 8, 1912. She enjoyed people and loved to help others, so being an active volunteer in the community was a very important part of Janet's life. She would often volunteer at the Downtown House and Bargain Treasures, and received a special Volunteer Award in 1988. Janet loved to watch soap operas on television, especially the game show, The Price Is Right. Janet will be lovingly remembered by two sons, Fred (Marie) Curr of Red Deer; George (Elsie) Curr of Lougheed, Alberta; one daughter, Laura Petryshyn of Bonnyville, Alberta; several grandchildren and great grandchildren; one great, great granddaughter; as well as one brother, Bill Scott of Red Deer. Janet was predeceased by her husband, Sandy; one son, John; one granddaughter, Ronda; three brothers, Roy, Jim, and George; and two sisters, Laura and Annie.
