ROBERTSON, Allan Leigh
1934-2003
Allen Leigh Robertson, beloved husband of Mrs. Janet Robertson, passed away at his home on Thursday, July 17, 2003 in Port Alberni, B.C. at the age of 69. Leigh was born on June 13, 1934 in Vulcan, Alberta. He farmed with his father in the Queenstown, Milo district and also cultivated an interest in antique cars. In 1959, he joined a fledgling Alberta Pioneer Auto Club and introduced his pride and joy 1916 Overland Touring. In 1960, Leigh became a strong advocate for antique auto license plates and was awarded with plate #4 for his efforts. Later that year, he also drove in his first Stampede parade. In 1963 he moved to Calgary and devoted himself to working in the automotive industry for many years. Always a proponent of the antique car hobby, he soon joined the Model T and Model A Ford clubs of Calgary, further widening his circle of friends and sharing knowledge and experiences. Because of his tireless dedication and efforts through the years, Leigh was widely recognized as spokesman and ambassador for the antique car community. He became the antique vehicle co-ordinator for the Calgary Stampede Parade Committee and his Overland carried many guests on that route for 40 years. He also dedicated himself to the importance of the International Antique Car Meet, a bi-yearly crossline event first held in 1960, with whom he shared the responsibilities with US counterpart and good friend Art Olson. The movie industry also sought Leigh's vintage car expertise and he had the pleasure of working on many pictures over the years, most notably the Legends of the Fall film. Leigh's embrace with antique cars was epitomized when he bought his brass era 1910 White Roadster. He proudly showed it at events like Spring Thaw and the World of Wheels, usually accepting the oldest car award hands down. He also took much pleasure as a member of the Calgary Horseless Carriage Club, and was instrumental in organizing a Canada/USA National brass car meet with his colleagues in 1992. When retirement beckoned in 2000, Leigh became captain of his ship and moved to Port Alberni, the island salmon fishing capitol. He spent many hours hosting friends and family at his home and on his Bayliner and finally had many true fishing stories to tell. Leigh will be greatly missed by all those who knew him and nothing will replace the tremendous love he surrounded his family with. Leigh is survived by his wife Janet; children, Keith Robertson (Sandy), Tracy Ward (Terry), Glenn Robertson (Paula), Steven Robertson (Barbara); stepchildren Terri-Lynn Eide (Daryl), Greig Stephenson (Cathy), Nadine Brotherston (Colin), Vicki Menard (Mike), Cathy Cypher, Kelly Jellis (Bill); and twenty grandchildren, Ryan, Francesca, Elizabeth, Tyler, Natalie, Scott, Delynn, Lorne, Daniel, Jordan, Nathan, Jessica, Amy, T.J., Natasha, Marshall, Nicolas, Patricia, Kevin and Jake; and numerous cousins and relatives in southern Alberta and Montana. Leigh was predeceased by his parents Allen and Sadie Robertson; his daughter Janet; his stepson Phillip; and Phillip and Steven's mother, Joan; and grandchildren Steven Jr. and Michael.
