Mr. Elvin George Russell, beloved husband of Beatrice of Red Deer, Alberta, passed away at the Dr. Richard Parson's Auxiliary Hospital, Red Deer, on Thursday, July 3, 2003 at the age of 85 years. Elvin leaves to mourn his loss his loving wife of sixty-two years, Beatrice, son, Keith (Connie) of Drumheller, Alberta, daughter, Fay (Edward) Stenvig of Red Deer and grandchildren, Mitch and Danny Russell of Drumheller, Joanne Stone of Didsbury, Alberta, Sheldon and Wendell Stenvig of Red Deer, Kim Stenvig of Campbell River, British Columbia and fourteen great grandchildren. He is also survived by brothers, Ronnie and Roy Russell of Calgary, Alberta and one sister, Ina Phillips of Wetaskiwin, Alberta. Elvin was predeceased by his parents, John and Rose Russell, seven brothers and three sisters. SCHAFER, DAVID ALLEN
Mr. David Allen Schafer of Red Deer passed away after a courageous battle with cancer at the Red Deer Regional Hospital Centre, Red Deer on Wednesday, July 9, 2003 at the age of 35 years. David loved to play and watch all kinds of sports, he was well liked by his friends and family especially for his sense of humor and his practical joking. He will be missed by all who knew him. He is survived by his father Allen (Jan) Schafer and Amy of Assineau, Alberta, his mother Sharon (Gord) Schafer, his sister Jeri Dick, his fiance' Samantha Richards all of Red Deer, his nephew Brandon and his niece Brittney. David is also survived by his stepsisters Kim and Denise, numerous Aunts, Uncles and Cousins. A Celebration of David's Life will be held at Eventide Funeral Chapel, 4820 - 45 Street, Red Deer on Monday, July 14, 2003 at 1:00 p.m. with The Reverend Dale Fallon officiating. SKOCDOPOLE, Charles Henry
1924 - 2003
Charles Henry Skocdopole passed away peacefully at the Dr. Richard Parsons Care Centre in Red Deer on July 5, 2003, at the age of 99 years. Charles was born in Osceola, Oklahoma on June 16, 1904. He came to Alberta with his parents when he was 9 months old, and grew up on their homestead in Botha. He remained in Botha helping his parents farm and doing mechanical work until he was 19, when he went to Kansas City, Missouri, to attend Sweeney Automobile School. He completed his training in automobile mechanics just as cars were becoming popular. In 1929, he traveled with his brothers to the Fort Assiniboine area to hunt moose, and stayed in the fall to work in a sawmill, where he met the love of his life, Mildred Strand. Mildred and Charles were married on March 3, 1930, and began a life together that lasted just short of 73 years. They lived and worked up north until 1938, when they moved to Botha to stay on Charles' family farm. While living there, Charles brush cut from Botha to Sylvan Lake. In 1941, he purchased the farm in Hespero, where he lived until 2 months before his passing. Charles, along with his two sons and son-in-law started the company, Skocdopole Construction in the 1950's, a company which began with road building, seismic work, buiding leases, etc. to mostly pipelining in the later years. He was well known for his ability as a mechanic, welder, machinist, and also as a dedicated community minded citizen. He was one of several who were instrumental in starting a gas co-op and a R.E.A. to bring gas and electricity to his rural area. He was also an elected member of the Local Improvement District #10 (now Clearwater County) for 25 years. In November of 2002, Charles received one of the Queen's Golden Jubilee Medals for his role as an outstanding citizen who contributed to the development of his community and the growth of Canada. Charles Skocdopole is survived by his 3 children; Ron (Carol), Gayle Englsih ( Gordon Johnson) and Glenn (Fern). He is also survived by his sister-in-law, Della Carty, 10 grandchildren, 15 great grandchildren, and 4 great great grandchildren. He was predeceased by his wife, Mildred ( January 2003) and his parents John and Marie, 2 brothers, 3 sisters, 3 sisters-in-law, 4 brothers-in-law, and son-in-law Ralph English. A Celebration of Charles' life will be held at the Eckville Community Centre ( 52nd St. & 54th Ave) on Thursday, July 10, 2003 at 1:30 pm. SMITH
Edna Margaret Smith, beloved wife of the late E.S. (Pat Smith), passed away June 2, 2003 at the Red Deer Regional Hospital. Edna was the only daughter of Paul and Edith Crawford and resided in Red Deer since 1929. She is survived by two brothers, Elmer (Doreen) in Calgary, Lloyd (Marge) in Drumheller; a sister-in-law, Jeanne Crawford in Red Deer; numerous nieces and nephews and great nieces and nephews. Edna was predeceased by her husband Pat in 1994, her parents Paul in 1972, Edith in 1990, her two brothers, Harold in 1970 and his wife Mona in 1973 and Mel in 1991. SMITH, Bonnie
Mrs. Bonnie Smith of Red Deer passed away peacefully at the Red Deer Regional Hospital on July 25, 2003 at the age of 56 years. Bonnie was very active within her community. She had worked for a number of years as an R.N.A. in Montreal. She later moved to Red Deer to work as a caregiver for Catholic Social Services. Bonnie had a special talent as an artist which she loved to do. She will be fondly remembered by her many close family and friends. Bonnie will be lovingly remembered by her husband Herm; one son Scott (Terri) Smith of Red Deer; one daughter Darlene Smith (Murray Pike) of Red Deer; two grandchildren Teagan and Kade; one brother Brian (Monika) McFee of Gibsons, BC; one sister Darlene (Tony) Newton of Calgary; her mother Bernice McFee of Red Deer; one nephew James Jenkins of Calgary. She was predeceased by her father Ralph in 1986. Services will be held at the Red Deer Funeral Home 6150 - 67 Street on Tuesday, July 29, 2003 at 1:00 p.m. with Leanne V. Hall officiating. STEVENS, Culla
Culla (May Battersby) Stevens of Red Deer passed away peacefully at the Valley Park Manor Nursing Home, Red Deer on Monday, July 07, 2003 at the age of 80 years. She was born May 12, 1923 at Borden, Saskatchewan. When May was 4 years old the family moved to Shell Lake, Saskatchewan where she took her schooling. She married Stanley Collins and they lived in Russell, Manitoba and Harding, Manitoba where they farmed together while May also worked at the post office. After Stanley passed away she married Leslie Robbins and they lived in Shell Lake area for several years. They parted ways and May moved west to various locations in Alberta. May had many different jobs in her lifetime but for a number of years she worked in a hardware store and was also a barber. In the early 1970's through astrological beliefs she changed her name to Culla Sharleen Stevens. May was a reserved person but did have a good ear for music. She enjoyed playing the mouth organ, playing bingo, lottery tickets and dabbled in painting. She is survived by her brother Richard (Corrie) Battersby of Shell Lake, Saskatchewan, two sisters, Marion Clancy of Coquitlam, B.C. and Laura (Louie) Olsen of Prince Alberta, Saskatchewan and numerous nieces and nephews. May was predeceased by her parents Eva and George Battersby, a brother Cameron Battersby and two sisters, Gertrude Clark and Grace Johnson. May will be interred at Scandia Cemetery, Shell Lake, Saskatchewan. Cremation entrusted to Central Alberta Crematorium, Red Deer. Late of Surrey, B.C., loving husband, father and grandfather. Ed was taken from us suddenly July 22, 2003 doing what he loved best - riding his Harley. Ed was born February 19, 1934 in Brokenhead, Man. Ed leaves to mourn his passing, his parents, Frank and Annie Struss; Marjorie, his wife of 46 years; three sons, Harvey (Lori), Randy (Sherri) and Michael (Tracy); two daughters, Jo-Anne Van Beek and Lisa (Steve) Denis; also by twelve wonderful grandchildren.
