It is with much sadness that we, the family of Darrell Edward Ogles announce the passing of our beloved father, Grandfather, Great Grandfather and friend in Blackfalds, Alberta. Darrell was born January 23, 1931 in Springhill, Nova Scotia. He served as a private in Germany with the First Canadian Highland Battalion during World War II. After the war Darrell got involved in sales as the general manager of Rosco Windows in New Brunswick. He eventually wanted to be his own boss and ventured into running his own restaurants and service stations. He continued in his ventures until retirement. He had spent the last few years catching up and getting to know his children. He always had a smile, a laugh and a kind word for everyone. Darrell is fondly remembered by his sons: Darren (Tanya) , and Mike; daughters: Donna, Dawn, Barb, Chrissie and Mary; grandchildren: D.J., Destin, Jessica, Chantel and Santera; his one Great Grandchild Denali; sister Joyce Michniak (Dowe) ; niece Marilyn and nephew David; close friends Denise, Keith and Rob and many other close acquaintances. Darrell was predeceased by his first wife Mary (Adams) , and third wife Margaret (Cameron) . Funeral Services will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, January 17, 2009 at Wilson’s Funeral Chapel, 6120 Hwy 2A, Lacombe, AB. Parsons
Stanley Edward “Stan” Parsons passed away peacefully at Lacombe Hospital January 6, 2009 with his family by his side. Stan was born at Youngstown, Alberta May 17, 1920 and grew up on the Parsons homestead at Big Stone. He enlisted in the RCAF during WW II, became an aircraft mechanic and was proud to serve his country. He returned to the family farm, married Arvella Lund and raised four children: Diana, Bev, Irene and Jim. In 1973, he sold the farm at Big Stone and bought a farm near Tees where he lived until he retired. Stan enjoyed fishing, curling, gardening, travelling and most of all, playing crib. He had a great sense of humor and loved to play practical jokes on his friends and neighbors. He was a proud father and grandfather and loved all of his family. Stan’s philosophy was “Bear down, get the hard work done and then have fun. If a job was worth doing, it was worth doing right." Stan was predeceased by his loving wife Arvella, a sister Elsie, a brother Jim and his parents Howard and Harriet. He is survived by daughters Diana, Bev (Gord) , Irene (Terry) and son Jim (Arlene) ; grandchildren Alan, Trevor, Blaine (Barb) , Wendy (Gord) , Tim, Susan, Jay, Jess, Jenny (Craig) , Coleman (Jaclynn) , Lane (Ashley) ; a sister Grace, a brother John and numerous great grandchildren, nieces, nephews and friends. A celebration of Stan’s life will be held Friday, January 16, 2009 at 2:00 p.m. at Wilson’s Funeral Chapel, 6120 Hwy 2A, Lacombe, AB. HAYES RICHARD, Lorena Joyce
With great sadness we announce the passing of our daughter Lorena Joyce Hayes Richard. She passed away peacefully in her sleep on January 7, 2009 at the age of 40. Lorena was a proud Albertan. She often said she spent her life chasing rigs and raising roughnecks. Lorena has left to grieve her loving husband Edgar Richard and her daughter Leah, also her Father and Mother, Roger and Joyce Hayes of Tees, her brother Norris Hayes, his wife Melanie and her two nephews Jaxson and Rhys Hayes of Lacombe. She was predeceased by her brother John Hayes in 2002, also many friends and family. Funeral services will be held at Wilson’s Funeral Chapel, 6120 Highway 2A, Lacombe, AB. on Wednesday, January 14, 2009 at 2:00 PM. Interment will follow in the Lacombe Fairview Cemetery. Colbens, Emma Murine
Emma went to be with her Lord on December 31, 2008 at the age 85 years. Emma Murine Colbens was born October 10, 1923 on the farm in Tilley to Colben Colbens and Nellie (Harris) Colbens. She was the 6th daughter in the family. The family had just moved from the Blue Grass country near Alderson to Tilley. She went to Renfrew School from grades 1-10 and in Brooks for grades 11 and 12. In 1942, during the war, she went to Normal School in Calgary for 4 months. Emma began her teaching career at Lancaster School. Later she went to Conquerville, Sexsmith and Valleyview. She said her best years were at Sexsmith. In 1956, she went into mission work for her faith and then to Hong Kong as a missionary. While in Hong Kong, she became ill and returned to a hospital in B.C. No longer able to do missionary work, she helped many people by looking after their children, and doing housework. After her mother died, she spent time with her dad in Tilley and working in the Brooks Hospital kitchen. Emma moved to the Manor in Lacombe and later to the Lodge. In May 2006, she was admitted to the Lacombe Hospital. Later that summer she broke her hip and spent some time in the Red Deer Hospital. She was transferred to the Stettler Hospital and Care Center until space became available in Lacombe Nursing Care Center where she resided until her death. Emma really appreciated the kindness and care given by the various hospital and nursing staffs. Emma was predeceased by her parents Colben and Nellie Colbens; sisters and brothers-in-law, Sigred and John Kamp, Jean and Sidney Frohberger; brother and sister in law, Ben and Ruth Colbens; and brother-in-law Jim Brooks. She leaves to mourn her passing, 3 sisters, Dorothy Brooks of Barrie, Ontario, Phyllis (Harold) Duke of Thunder Bay, Ontario, Cleota Affleck of Fort Macleod, Alberta; one brother Tom (Dorothy) Colbens of Airdrie, Alberta, as well as many nieces and nephews and their families, and cousins in Norway and England. All her relatives and friends will miss her gentle nature and winning smile. Funeral Services will be held at 2:00 p.m. on January 8, 2009 at Wilson’s Funeral Chapel, 6120 Hwy 2A, Lacombe, Alberta. Interment to follow in the Lacombe Fairview Cemetery. If desired, memorial contributions may be made to the charity of one’s choice.
GIBSON – Beverley Joyce
November 16, 1933 – January 1, 2009
Joyce Gibson passed away peacefully at Lacombe General Hospital in the early hours of January 1st, 2009 at the age of 75 years.She was a devoted Mother, Grandmother and just recently Great Grandmother. She was always more concerned about others and always ready to crack a joke or say just the right thing to cheer someone else up and for that she will be greatly missed by family and friends alike. She is survived by her loving children, sons Bill (Lorna) and Jim (Sandy) , and daughter Susan, granddaughters Megan (Rob) , Angie (Kurtis) and Maryellen, grandsons Stephen (Elyssa) and Andrew and great grandson Alexander.The family would like to thank the Lacombe Hospital and Lacombe Palliative Care Foundation and the staff and Doctors in Unit 47 at the Tom Baker Center in Calgary for their devoted and loving care of Joyce during her courageous battle with cancer these past three months. Funeral services where held at St. Andrews United Church, 5226-51 Ave, Lacombe, Alberta on Wednesday, January 7th, 2009 at 2:00pm. Cremation followed. Anderson, Ruth Beatrice
With sadness we announce that Ruth Anderson passed away on December 27, 2008. She died peacefully at ninety years of age, following a massive stroke on December 17. Until then she led an active life in a retirement lodge where she lived with her husband. She will be lovingly remembered by her husband Bill, children Frances Anderson of Vancouver, Marge (Mike) Kryzanowski of Spruce Grove, Terry (Alpha) Anderson of New Roads, Louisiana, Charles (Maryanne) Anderson of Calgary; eight grandchildren and fourteen great grandchildren. Funeral Services will be held Friday, January 2, 2008 at 2:00 p.m. at Wilson’s Funeral Chapel, 6120 Highway 2A, Lacombe, Alberta. Pedersen
Dr. Florence Lavina [Viney] Pedersen peacefully went home to be with her Lord at the age of 91 on Christmas Day, 2008 while residing at Harmony House in Red Deer. She was predeceased by her father, Wilfred Roy Cutlan, her mother Laura Lavina Cutlan and brother Edward Roy Cutlan. She was also predeceased by her loving husband and soul mate of 65 years, Dr. William Pedersen. Survived by her children Ruth [Gordon] Lennon of Calgary, Dr. Donald [Lois] Pedersen of Red Deer, Ann [Lorne] Wedlund of Lacombe, Dr. Bruce Pedersen of Whitehorse, Yukon and her son Bryan [Denise] Pedersen of Gibsons, B.C., she also leaves to mourn her brother-in-law George [Amy] Pedersen sister-in-law Esther [Ed] Pedersen, 18 grandchildren, 26 great grandchildren, 7 great-great grandchildren, surrogate daughter and friend Alice [Carruthers} Richardson, and many nieces and nephews.
Lavina was born in Oyen, Alberta, on May 14, 1917. After a few years in Manitoba where her father was a farmer, her family moved to Sylvan Lake, Alberta, where she attended her first 9 years of school. For High School she moved to Camrose where she attended the Lutheran college and graduated top of her class. It was here that she met her partner for life and on August 15, 1937 they where married. Lavina, along with her husband William, graduated from the Palmer School of Chiropractic in 1941. They opened their 1st practices in Bentley, Rimbey and Sylvan Lake . In 1943 they moved to the ““gingerbread house”” in Lacombe where William set up practice and Lavina changed careers and became a full time homemaker where she pursued life with grace, dignity and excellence giving of herself tirelessly. She loved sewing, knitting, crocheting, needlework, cooking and vegetable gardening spending many hours preserving so that her family had wholesome food during the winter months. She also had a great passion for horses and was delighted when Bill bought a farm just south of Lacombe so that she would have easy access to riding and caring for their horses. Horseback riding into Mount Assiniboine or out in the West Country where they would go hunting was a favorite activity. She loved her summers at their cottage at Gull Lake, skiing, and winters in Yuma, Arizona, where they spent many wonderful winters enjoying the sunshine and making many new friends. Lavina stayed firmly grounded by studying her Bible. Her friends and family knew that she was praying for them everyday. One of her favorite verses was ““ Thou wilt keep her in perfect peace whose mind is stayed on Thee””. Isaiah 26:3 Lavina and Bill moved to Red Deer where they resided in Victoria Park Residence and Westpark Manor.
Finally Lavina moved to Harmony House where she resided for almost 2 years being lovingly treated with professionalism, dignity and respect. Our special thanks go to Renee and her staff for providing a homelike environment for her final days. Thank you. The family wishes to thank Rev. George McKenzie for his friendship and officiating at the memorial service to be held at Wilson’s Funeral Chapel, 6120 Highway 2A, Lacombe, AB. on Saturday, January 3rd at 2:00 p.m. Mother you will be truly missed by your family. We will rejoice when we are together again with our Lord. Liddell
Rev. Stewart Liddell of Edmonton, formerly of Red Deer was called to his heavenly reward on December 22, 2008. A service to honor the blessings of God will be held at the Unity Baptist Church, 139 Northey Ave. Red Deer, on Monday December 29, 2008 at 2:30 P.M. All relatives, friends and neighbors are invited to remain for a time of fellowship following the service. Marshall
Douglas James Marshall passed away at the Innisfail Health Center on February 20, 2009 at the age of 77. He was born Nov. 30. 1931 at Castor, Ab. He is remembered by his first wife, Marge Marshall of Lacombe and their 6 children and families. Barb (Gord) Johnston of Calgary, Taylor & Tyson; Brenda (Bill) Jackson of Lacombe, Kayla (Ross) & Ryan; Connie Johnson of Lacombe, Tanner & Dylan; Bob (Shelley) Marshall of Olds, Cory & Carley; Colleen (Boris) Velcic of Calgary; and Jackie Marshall of Linden. Doug’s career was mostly in road construction and during his life he enjoyed curling, farm life, horses, country music, flying, chuckwagon races, cards, gardening and woodworking. Doug was predeceased by his parents, Ingleton (Slim) and Ethel; his sister, Dorothy; and brothers Gerald and Dale; second wife, Pat Marshall; and companion, Pat Miller. Special thanks to all the health care professionals and in particular those at Autumn Glen Lodge, Innisfail and special friend, Diane Phillips. Funeral service will be held from Wilson’s Funeral Chapel, 6120, Hwy 2A, Lacombe Alberta on Thursday, February 26, 2009 at 2:00pm. Hedlin, Doraine Elizabeth
May 29, 1916 – February 21, 2009
Doraine Hedlin passed away February 21, 2009 at the age of 92 years. Doraine is survived by her son Ken, his wife Karen, and her grandchildren Leslie and Robert. Doraine was predeceased by her parents Mary and Henry Powell, her sisters Thelma and Mary, her brothers Millard, Harry, Bill, and Jack, her husband Dave, and son Russell. Doraine was born in High River and worked in her father’s bakery until her marriage in 1948. After living n Edmonton, Dave and Doraine moved to Lacombe in 1951, with one year old Kenneth. Doraine was an accomplished singer and pianist. She led the St. Andrews United Church senior choir for many years in the 1950’s and 1960’s as well as teaching both singing and piano to many local children. During the 1960’s and 1970’s she was the librarian for the Lacombe Public Library. She and Dave were active in the Lacombe community, generously supporting community projects including the new swimming pool and library. Doraine touched many lives especially her family who will miss her very much. She was a loving and caring person, who had a soft spot for children, never letting a baby pass by without a hug or a kiss. The family wants to pass on their heartfelt thanks and gratitude to all the nurses, aides and staff at the Lacombe Extended Care Unit for the exceptional care and personal attention Doraine consistently
