Mrs. Jolan Inkpen
February 25, 1922 - August 2, 2007

Jolan Inkpen beloved wife, mother, and grandmother passed away peacefully at the age of 85 years.

She will be lovingly remembered by her husband of 60 years, Jack, her daughter Marianne and her son David (Cheryl), two grandchildren; Jayme and Jessy.

She is also survived by two sisters; Maria McCallum and Anne Harrison, as well as numerous nieces and nephews.

Jolan was predeceased by her parents and her sister Elizabeth.

A private family service will be held.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Alberta Heart & Stroke Foundation or to the Charity of ones choice.

Mr. Paul Arthur Levasseur
January 11, 1947 - August 13, 2007

On Monday, August 13, 2007 Paul Levasseur of Edmonton passed away at the age of 60 years.

He is survived by his children, Nicole (Mike) Girard, Perry (Nancy); one grandchild, Sean; his mother Rita Levasseur; four brothers and one sister. He was predeceased by his father, Harvey.

A Graveside Service will be held on Tuesday, August 21, 2007 at 10:00 a.m. in Evergreen Memorial Gardens, 16102 Fort Road, Edmonton. Cremation has taken place.

Mr. William "Bill" Hryniw
April 7, 1921 - August 14, 2007

On Tuesday, August 14, 2007 Bill Hryniw of Red Deer passed away at the age of 86 years.

He is survived by his loving wife, Ollie (nee: Myson); three daughters, Linda (Jim) Thompson, Laura Hryniw, Cathy (Bradley) Down; four grandchildren, Kim, Jay, Chandra, Kacia; two sisters, Anne and Sophie.

A Memorial Service will be held on Monday, August 20, 2007 at 10:30 a.m. at the Evergreen Funeral Chapel, 16204 Fort Road, Edmonton. Cremation has taken place. Memorial Donations may be made to the Alberta Cancer Foundation, 11560 University Avenue, Edmonton, AB, T5G 1Z2.

Ms. Ethel Elizabeth Baker
February 2, 1921 - August 14, 2007

It is with great sadness that we announce the peaceful passing of our loving mother and grandmother, Ethel Baker, on Tuesday, August 14. Ethel will be fondly remembered by her daughter Nancy (Ron) Reynolds of Toronto, her son Ron (Jane) Baker of Calgary, and her three special granddaughters Katie, Carolyn and Heather. The family would like to thank Dr. Waldi Wilkin who provided excellent medical advice, as well as all of the wonderful staff and caregivers at the Statesman Manor (Signature Park) and the Renoir who helped Ethel when she first moved to Calgary. We would like to extend a very special thank you to Dr. Don Stinton, the nurses, staff and care givers of Unit 300 at the Beverly Centre Glenmore for the extraordinarily kind and compassionate care that they have given Ethel over the last one and a half years. Ethel will be laid to rest in her childhood hometown of Kitchener, Ontario. Mr. Stanley Meno Checkley
August 12, 1931 - August 11, 2007

It is with great sadness that the family of Stanley Meno Checkley, beloved husband, father and poppa, announces his peaceful passing in the early hours of August 11th.

Stan is lovingly remembered by his dear wife of 42 years, Shirley (nee Adams, originally from Humboldt, SK), his daughters, Sharon (Roy Treptau) and Sylvia, along with his cherished granddaughter, Morgan. Stan is also survived by his sister, Violet Mason (Moose Jaw), and his brother, Ross (Betty) Checkley (Fox Valley), as well as many extended family members.

Stan was predeceased by his father, William; mother, Maud Viola; stepfather, Joe Lafferty; brothers, Thomas, Irvin, Russell, William, Kenneth; sisters, Lilas and Alieta; as well as many other dear family members.

Stan was born on the family farm near Kelstern, SK, the second youngest of ten children. He grew up in the Kelstern/Chaplin area. He graduated from Moose Jaw Normal School in 1952 and then thoroughly enjoyed teaching in rural Saskatchewan, including his role as Principal in Climax, SK. Stan always encouraged students “to be the best that they could be.” Stan later completed a BA and BEd at the U of S in 1962, followed by a MEd at the U of S in 1969. He worked as a Counsellor and Head of the Counselling Department at NAIT and then as a Rehabilitation Program Consultant for the Government of Alberta. Stan retired in 1990.

The family wishes to thank Dr. McAlister and the staff of 5D2 at the U of A Hospital and Dr. Barton and the staff of the Norwood Palliative Care Unit.

Cremation has already taken place. A memorial service to celebrate Stan’s life will be held on Friday August 17, 2007 at 1:30 pm at South Side Memorial Chapel, 8310-104 St, Edmonton, AB.

Those wishing may make a memorial donation in Stan’s name to the Alberta Cancer Foundation, Cross Cancer Institute, 11560 University Ave, Edmonton, AB, T6G 1Z2.

Mrs. Joan Barfett
April 12, 1926 - August 20, 2007

It is with great sorrow and rejoicing that we announce that Joan Barfett of Edmonton went to be with her beloved husband and daughter in heaven August 20, 2007 at the age of 81 years.

Joan will be sadly missed and forever remembered by her family; son Raymond (Christina Hordijenko), daughters, Sally (Dan) Petaske, Jackie Barfett (Peter Amelia), Joanne (Lee) Paull; nine grandchildren, Tena (John), Yvonne (Dan), Jennifer (Chris), Heath (Sharyl), Tyler, Alesha (Jason), Joshua, Shaymus, Nathania; and six great-grandchildren, Anthony, Kristena, Ashlee-Ann Joan, Ariana, Rhys, and Vaughn. Joan is also survived by her brother John (Ivy) McNamee and numerous nieces, nephews, extended family and close friends. She is predeceased by her loving husband Jack, daughter Yvonne and sister Kathleen Acton. A Memorial Service will take place on Friday, August 24, 2007 at 2:00 p.m. at the Evergreen Funeral Chapel, 16204 Fort Road, Edmonton. Interment of cremated remains to follow in Evergreen Memorial Gardens. Mr. Walter Christopher Morris
January 5, 1940 - August 16, 2007

Walter Christopher Morris, at the age of 67, passed away peacefully from heart failure in Calgary, Alberta on August 16, 2007, with his family by his side. Walter is predeceased by his parents, Lillian and Thomas Morris, of Delisle, Saskatchewan and his brother Bob, of Saskatoon. Walter leaves behind his loving wife, Audrey, of 44 years; daughters Melanie Leask (Dean) of High River, Alberta; and Rhonda Coleman (Don) of Victoria, B.C. Pa will be missed by his treasured grandchildren Macleod, Billy (Leask), and Chelsea (Coleman), and his special little loved one Andrew (Christopher) Gallant. Walter will also be remembered by his brother Merrick of Delisle, two loving sister-in-laws (Pat and Patricia), as well as many wonderful nieces, nephews and friends. Walter grew up on the Morris farm just outside of Delisle, Saskatchewan. He had a rewarding career; first on the family farm, then for three years in the Canadian Armed Forces Signals’ Division. For the next 34 years, Walter worked for City Lumber/ Beaver Lumber Company; he retired in 2000. W.C. loved the great outdoors where his passions included hunting, fishing, golfing, and camping, with his family and friends (Over the Hill Gang). Walter loved to travel and often escaped the cold prairie winters to Yuma, Arizona. He also enjoyed spending time at the lake (Little Bow) and building/designing cabins (Wakaw and Little Bow). Walter cherished his family and his friends. We will miss you, Pa. A Memorial Service will be held on Tuesday, August 21, 2007 at 2:00 p.m. at Leyden’s Chapel of Remembrance (corner of 17th Avenue and 2nd Street SW). Mrs. Irene Slavitch (Sawchuk)
March 5, 1931 - August 19, 2007

Vichnay Pam’yat

It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of our beloved wife, mother and grandmother, Irene Jeanne Slavitch (Sawchuk), on Sunday, August 19, 2007, at the Sarcee Hospice.

She will always be remembered by her loving husband, Alex Sawchuk; her daughter Janette and her husband John Gescher, and their children Stefanie and Eric; her son Michael and his wife Melanie Slavitch, and their children, Elli, Noah, and Alexander of Ottawa; her stepchildren Rosemary, Michael and Terry Sawchuk of Winnipeg; as well as numerous relatives and friends in Canada, Poland and Ukraine.

Irene was born on March 5, 1931 in Montargis, France, to Florian and Joanna Szulfer. Her parents died when she was a child, and she was raised by her maternal grandmother in the village of Chanyz, Ukraine. Irene lived in Lviv, Ukraine and Wroclaw, Poland and immigrated to Winnipeg Canada in 1965 where she worked for the Manitoba Home Care Program for many years. Irene and Alex moved to Calgary in 1992.

Irene was blessed with golden hands and excelled at gardening, cooking, sewing and needlework. She loved to entertain her family and friends. She had a beautiful voice and loved to sing and dance. She also had a wonderful sense of humour.

She will be deeply missed by all who knew her.

Prayers will take place on Friday, August 24, 2007 at 7:00 p.m., at Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary Ukrainian Catholic Church (704 6 Street NE, Calgary).

Divine Liturgy will be served at 10:00 a.m., on Saturday August 25, 2007 at Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary Ukrainian Catholic Church, with Rev. Serhiy Harahuc officiating. Interment to follow at Queen’s Park Cemetery.

Special thanks to the caring staff of the Sarcee Hospice.

Memorial donations may be made directly in Irene’s name to the Children of Chernobyl Canadian Fund, (2118A Bloor St. West, Suite 200, Toronto, Ontario M6S 1M8).

Mrs. Genevieve Corrine Marlowe
April 8, 1939 - August 15, 2007

It is with deep regret to announce that Genevieve (Gen) Marlowe passed away suddenly on August 15, 2007 at the age of 68 years after a brief illness, seven weeks after her beloved husband of 41 years, Ronald, had passed on.

She leaves to mourn her loss, her son that she loved so much, Robin.

She is also survived by three brothers and two sisters, Lorne Rosnau (Lorna) of Vernon, BC, Alice Gable (Tom) of Sooke, BC, Robert Rosnau of Edmonton, Marianne Sterling (Len) of Sherwood Park, and Timothy Rosnau of Edmonton as well as numerous nieces, nephews, relatives and friends.

She was predeceased by her parents, Walter and Mathilde (Tillie) Rosnau, and her brother Raymond.

A celebration of life will be held on Friday, August 24th, 2007 at 10:00 a.m., at the Evergreen Funeral Chapel, 16204 Fort Road, Edmonton.

Gen appreciated the arts. She particularly had a passion for old movies. She loved spending time with her family, and was a loving and caring person who made life a better place for the people around her.

1 Corinthians 15:20-22 - "The truth is that Christ has been raised from death, is the guarantee that those who sleep in death will also be raised. For just as death came by means of a man, the rising of death comes by means of a man. For just as all people die because of their union with Adam, in the same way all be raised to life because of their union with Christ."

May you rest in peace, Gen. You are now free from sickness.
