THIEVIN, Thomas
THIEVIN, Thomas Prosper - Tom Thievin, 60, died peacefully at the Red Deer Regional Hospital on August 12, 2007 in the presence of his mother and his daughter. He had endured a long, brave battle with stomach cancer. Tom was born November 25, 1946 in Lampman, Saskatchewan and graduated from Immaculate Heart High school in his hometown Estevan. He studied at the University of Saskatchewan and served Imperial Esso in northern Alberta for many years. He took early retirement and found his truest calling, that of a piano technician, in 1987. Beyond his contributions to society and those around him who felt his warmth and understood his passions, Tom was always a true gentleman. The oldest of 10 musical children, he remained focused on music throughout his entire life. He was highly conversant in the field of acoustic guitars and generously participated in Red Deer's bluegrass music scene. His knowledge of pianos and his tuning skills were demonstrated by a long and astounding client base from the modest of churches to some of Canada's most noted celebrities. He served a double term as president of the Canadian Association of Piano Technicians. Tom was also wild about sailing and likewise knew the field well. He started with a Hobie Cat on Sylvan Lake and graduated to a blue-water sailboat on the Pacific. He was also very computer savvy, embracing the technological age and sharing his knowledge with anyone who expressed interest in his passions. To say the least, this was a giving man who loved life. He is survived, and will be lovingly remembered, by all nine siblings, his daughter Kayla, his mother Bernadette Hnatiuk. Tom's family gratefully acknowledges the care he received from the wonderful staff at the RDRH Palliative Care unit. If desired, memorial contributions may be made to the Canadian Cancer Foundation. Cremation and a memorial will follow at an undetermined date.
