AIKENS, Irvin
AIKENS Irvin Leebert "Red" - passed away in Stettler, December 7 at the age of 62. Born on the farm near Lavenham, MB, "Red" lived in Winnipeg through his youth, stealing every opportunity to return to the farm. When very young he learned to operate heavy equipment - this set him on his path of outdoor construction. He married his soul-mate, Maureen, and they had a son, Curtis, in 1966. In 1970 he pulled up stakes and “emigrated” to Calgary where he found work as a heavy equipment operator for AGT (now TELUS) with whom he was to spend 30 years. In 1973 he transferred to Red Deer where he made many friends and fell in love with the hobby of Working Dog Training And Breeding. He would eventually become a judge and show director in the sport. In 1987 Red and Maureen moved to Stettler where they found a farm to call their own and a place to satisfy his love of horses and other animals. Although he retired from TELUS in 2000, inactivity didn't sit well with Red, and he quickly filled his time helping other farms and friends in any way possible. Eventually he re-entered the work force. He was particularly proud of his work with First Pick Cranes, his colleagues, and the trucks and equipment entrusted to him. He would speak many times to his friends and grandchildren of what he was doing and what he was doing it with. Red lived for the people he cared for, checking constantly just to hear that all was well and healthy with each. He would give his coat to a person with the chills in a blizzard, sacrificing all comfort for himself, if the opportunity presented itself. He was loyal beyond question, loving without reservation and humble beyond reproach. He is survived by his wife of 42 years - Maureen, son Curtis (Lynette), grandchildren Christopher and Chelsea, “sis” - Vera, sister-in-law Sharron Willits (Sandy) and nephew Sean and niece Kelley and many close friends. Red’s wishes were to carry-on with life and to not spend time or ceremony on him in his passing. He wished a final celebration of life to be held at the farm, in the Summer of 2008. Donations may be made to a local Humane Society/SPCA or to any charity of your choice. STETTLER FUNERAL HOME, 742-3422, entrusted with the care and arrangements.
ABEL
ABEL The Reverend Stewart Abel died peacefully in the early morning hours of December 8, 2007 in Calgary, Alberta in the care of his loving wife and children. Born on September 11, 1914 in Lacombe, Alberta to Scottish immigrant parents, James and Wilhelmina Abel, Stewart was raised on the family farm which is still worked today by his extended family. After graduating from high school, he undertook pastoral studies at the Canadian Nazarene College in Red Deer, Alberta. Upon graduation in 1939, Stewart was assigned his first congregation at Chisholm, Alberta. Shortly thereafter he became pastor in nearby High Prairie, where he met Sophie Hartshorne Keay, the woman who would become his loving wife, companion and help-mate in the service of the Lord for the next 63 years. The couple was married on June 26, 1944. In a career that spanned nearly seven decades, Stewart served as pastor not only in Chisholm and High Prairie, but in Port Alberni, British Columbia, Stettler and Sedgewick, Alberta, and in Melfort, Saskatchewan. In 1959, he moved with his wife and children to the United States where he was pastor in Britt, Ottumwa, and Indianola, Iowa, and finally in Oregon, Illinois. In 1976, Stewart was asked to return to Canada to pastor at Sedgewick, Alberta where he built the new Nazarene church and parsonage. Stewart served there until his retirement in 1980. Unable to remain "retired" he accepted positions as "interim" pastor over the next 20 years for congregations in Minneapolis, Minnesota, Lacombe and Calgary. When his body was too tired to support the calling of his soul, Stewart entered Newport Harbour Care Center in Calgary shortly before his 90th birthday. Even though he was often confined to a wheelchair he gathered residents for Sunday services in the tiny nursing home chapel. Soon the congregation outgrew the chapel and moved to a larger multipurpose room. After a series of small strokes made it impossible for Stewart to continue the services, his wife, Sophie, took up his ministry. Each Sunday, until the time of his passing, Stewart continued to attend the services where he welcomed residents to this simple house of the Lord. Stewart Abel has returned home to Lacombe for his eternal rest in the arms of the Lord he loved so dearly. He is survived by his wife Sophie, their four children; Lois Abel-Priester of Bloomfield, Iowa, George Abel of Calgary, Mavis Gibson of Belleair, Florida, and Janis Abel of Calgary. The Reverend Abel was blessed with five grand children, Heather, Elisa, William, Scott and Molly as well as a great-grandson, Logan. His legacy of devotion to his God and service to his fellow man will live on through his family. Funeral services will be held on Wednesday, December 12, 2007 at 1:30 pm in the Church of the Nazarene, Lacombe, Alberta. The family will be present to receive those who wish to pay their last respects to the Reverend Abel one hour prior to the service. Glen also leaves to cherish his memory one son, Trevor Sweet of Cochrane; two daughters, Beverly (Denis) Tessmann and Michele (Mike) Welford, both of Medicine Hat; one step-daughter, Rani (Mike) Verbonac of Edmonton; eight grandchildren, Dylan Sweet (Kim Sabin) and Colby Sweet and their mother, Glenda Sweet, Matthew and Mark Tessmann, Evan and Eric Welford, Chella Schlenker, and Mya Verbonac; three brothers, Max (Etta) Sweet of Ponoka, Ross (Jean) Sweet of Redcliff, Alberta and Roy (Ivy) Whitfield of Prince George, British Columbia; one sister, Alice (Jim) Newnham of Calgary; one sister-in-law, Rosemary Sweet of Stony Plain; numerous nieces and nephews; his mother-in-law, Melrose Schlenker of Medicine Hat; as well as Donna's family; and his first wife, Helen's family. In 1965, they moved to St. Thomas, Ontario for two years where Glen proceeded to graduate in the 99th percentile of his psych nursing training. There was a move back to Ponoka in 1967 and to Medicine Hat in 1969. Glen changed jobs temporarily to heavy equipment operation and moved his family to Grande Cache, Alberta in 1974 for 5 years. He loved Medicine Hat Tiger hockey and enjoyed his driving. Glen liked camping, reading and could tackle a crossword. He also enjoyed music, loved dancing very much and relished any social occasion with family and friends. Glen was a passionate, hard-working, honest and honorable man. Anything worth doing was worth doing well and doing right the first time. With inner strength, a positive attitude and determined manner, those who met Glen knew that they could rely on him. Glen did not believe this was a way to impress but how one earns respect, and he did that. He was thoughtful in feeling and action, compassionate in care and knew that giving was better than receiving. He will be sadly missed by his loving family and host of many friends.
