POWELL - Ronald Ross Powell of Calgary, Alberta passed away suddenly on November 28, 1997 at the age of 60 years, while in Colombo, Sri Lanka. He was a devoted, loving husband, best friend and partner to his wife Doreen, and proud father of his two sons, Bradley and Ryan. He also leaves behind brothers, Russell (Jocelyn) of Calgary and John (Gail) of Toronto; two god-daughters, Myra Ripley and Sheena Galvin; as well as many nieces, nephews, and grand-nieces and nephews. Ron was born in Calgary on January 1, 1937 and grew up in this city where he made numerous deep and lasting friendships and where his compassion and love for people was demonstrated in his choice of career, his active volunteer commitments and his dedication to his family. Ron obtained his Bachelor of Science Degree in Geology in 1960 from the University of Idaho, his Bachelor of Education Degree from the University of Alberta at Calgary in 1963 and his Master of Arts Degree in Education Administration in 1978 from the University of Calgary. Ron began his career with the Calgary Board of Education in the classroom teaching math and science. Shortly after joining the Board, Ron took a leave of absence to participate with the Canadian government in an overseas educational initiative, spending two years in Jamaica teaching at a Teacher's College in Bethlehem, an experience he never forgot. Later he served as Assistant Principal in several High Schools including Sir Winston Churchill and Ernest Manning. During his thirty-two year tenure with the Calgary Board of Education, Ron led a series of challenging administrative assignments. As Ron was involved in the lives of thousands of students and cared for them so deeply, he chose to spend his last few years in Henry Wise Wood High School instead of the boardroom. Following his retirement in 1994, Ron began his consulting career in geology and education. As a geological consultant he has traveled to well-sites from Rainbow Lake to Brooks. As an International Educational consultant for the World Bank, he was on his second assignment in Sri Lanka. Volunteering in the community was also an extremely meaningful part of Ron's life. He was a Past Master of Zetland Lodge No. 83 AF and AM, the 32 Degree A and ASR, the Royal Order of Scotland and was a member of the Alazar Temple Shrine. The Calgary Interfaith Food Bank and Canadian Red Cross were two of his favorite volunteer organizations and he appreciated the hands-on difference these organizations make in Calgary. Ron's other passions included gardening, tennis, basketball, country and western music and gourmet cooking. In 1996, Ron and Doreen began a new chapter in their lives, traveling to Sri Lanka where Ron began the first of his educational consulting assignments on behalf of the World Bank, to improve school administration and vocational training standards in that country. This assignment provided the opportunity for Ron and Doreen to travel extensively throughout India and Asia. Together they walked on beaches, explored ancient temples, rode elephants and "lived in the moment". A Memorial Service celebrating Ron's life will be held at Southwood United Church, 10690 Elbow Drive S.W. on Tuesday, December 9, 1997 at 3:30 p.m. with the Rev. Alan Schooley officiating. Flowers are gratefully declined, but if friends so wish, a donation in Ron's memory may be made to the Calgary Interfaith Food Bank, S.T.A.R.S. Air Ambulance, the Salvation Army or to their charity of choice.
