- Shop now for incredible insights into your wellbeing -MERKEL - Mr. Conrad (Conn) Andrew Merkel passed away at the Peter Lougheed Hospital on October 29, 1997, at the age of 64 years. He was born February 15, 1933 at the Calgary General Hospital. Conn was a welder for years, before driving truck for M.E. Singer Trucking in Calgary. He will be deeply missed by two brothers and sisters-in-law, Art and Connie of Gleichen, Ed and Carol of Ponoka; and a sister and brother-in-law, Marjorie and Chad Riediger of Brooks, Alberta. Conn will also be greatly missed by his many nieces and nephews, as he was a favoured uncle. He was predeceased by his mother Bertilla Newall, his father Ned Merkel, and his brother Fred. Funeral Services will be held at McINNIS & HOLLOWAY'S "Park Memorial Chapel", (5008 Elbow Drive S.W.), on Monday, November 3, 1997 at 10:30 a.m. Graveside Service to follow at Mountain View Memorial Gardens Cemetery. MERKLEY - Jean Merkley of Sidney, B.C., passed away at Arranglen Lodge at Qualicum Beach on June 18, 1997 at the age of 83 years. Jean is survived by her children, Belva (Gordon) Gauley, Ray (Bernice) Merkley, Betty (Dave) Stanway; stepchildren, Tom (Dot) Merkley, Ken (Barb) Merkley, Shirley Vandeveld, Joyce Ostranski, June Mortimore, and Fred (Barb) Merkley; numerous grandchildren and great-grandchildren; her sister May Dominic and sister-in-law Dorothy Downes. She was predeceased by her husband Roy Merkley in 1975, her brothers, Harold Downes in 1988 and Ernie Downes in 1997. She will be fondly remembered by all who knew her as a warm and generous person. Thanks to all her caregivers, especially to those at Arranglen Lodge in Qualicum Beach. MERKLEY - Lawrence (Laurie) Edwin Merkley. My beloved Laurie departed us at home on June 4, 1997, following a brief, courageous struggle with cancer. He will be forever loved and remembered by his wife Hazel of almost thirty-seven years. He is also survived by brothers, Arnold, Ian, Donald; and sister Lorene Draper, all of Calgary; and a very dear and special sister and brother-in-law, Betty and Gordon Watson of Gravenhurst, Ontario; and by numerous nieces and nephews, cousins, and many dear friends. Laurie was born and raised in Calgary to the late Harold and Ruth Merkley, on March 24, 1934. He spent thirty-five years at A.G.T., early retiring December 31, 1987, then taking up ranching on his grandfather's homestead of 1904, located on Bearspaw Road. He possessed a great love for animals, especially their precious dachshunds. He found great pleasure pursuing many of his hobbies over the years, waterskiing, downhill skiing, golfing, and traveling in a loving partnership with his wife Hazel. He will be sorely missed by all who knew and loved him. Laurie was a lifetime member of the Telephone Pioneers of America, a member of the Appeal Board for the MD of Rockyview for five years, former member of the Elks and Lions Clubs of Bearspaw. Many thanks to Dr. C. Le Blanc, and to the physicians and Unit 72 nursing staff at the Rockyview Hospital during his stays, for their loving care and support, and to the Cochrane Home Care Support Group and a special thanks to Neil of Cochrane, also Shannon, Faith, and Larry. PODOLSKI - Mr. John Walter Podolski of Calgary passed away on September 7, 1997 at the age of 75 years. He is survived by three sons, Steve (Marlie) of Rocky Mountain House, Greg (Jocylyn) of Rocky Mountain House, and John (Dove) of Norfolk, West Virginia, U.S.A.; one daughter Lisa Podolski of Calgary. He is also survived by six grandchildren, six sisters and six brothers. John was predeceased by his loving wife Elinor (nee Walker) on September 7, 1983. Funeral Services for the late Mr. John Podolski will be held on Saturday, September 13, 1997 from The Chapel of The ROCKY FUNERAL HOME, Rocky Mountain House at 2:00 p.m. with Cremation to follow. POGUE - W. Gordon died peacefully December 22, 1997 at Foothills Hospital after a lengthy illness. He is survived by his son Donald (Carol) of Calgary; and his sister Mary Coons of Thessalon, Ontario; loving grandchildren, Stephen, Carolyn, Teresa, Anton (Jeanne), Michael, Tim (Leslie) and Karen; three great-grandchildren, Ashley, Kirsten and Douglas; together with cherished daughters-in-law, Mary Jane of Calgary and Gwen of Sandpoint, Idaho. He was predeceased in 1993 by his loving wife Elsie, and his sons, Douglas (1992) and David (1993). Born in Peterborough, Ontario in 1908, Gordon received his professional training at George Williams College and North-Western University in Chicago where he married Elsie in 1930. Moving to Toronto in 1934, he established Pogue Health Service, an athletic club and health education facility, later pioneering the same health and fitness service in Calgary from 1950 to his retirement in 1974. For the next twenty-two years, he remained active in Lahaina, Hawaii until ill-health brought him back to Calgary. He was highly regarded for his dedication to well-being, and remained, until the end, a promoter of healthy living. Heartfelt thanks is extended for the dedicated and tireless efforts of the entire staff of Unit 47 and the Dialysis Unit staff of Foothills Hospital. Relatives and friends are cordially invited to a Reception in Gordon's honour at Jacques Funeral Home, 240 - 17 Avenue S.W., Sunday, December 28, 1997 between 1:00 and 3:00 p.m. A Memorial Service will be held at a later date in Lahaina where burial of cremated remains will take place. POISSANT - Annette Poissant of Calgary, passed away peacefully at the Foothills Hospital on Wednesday, November 12, 1997 at the age of 65 years. Annette loved and lived life to the fullest. Her kind spirit touched the lives of many. She will be greatly missed. Annette is survived by her longtime companion Tom; her five sons, Rick (Judy), Edwin (Cathy), Clyde (Christine), Ron (Rae-Lynn) and Eric (Nicole); as well as eighteen grandchildren, and one great-grandchild. POLE - Leola Pole passed away peacefully Tuesday, July 22, 1997 at Extendicare/Hillcrest, Calgary. Born in Granum, Alberta, June 4, 1915, the second daughter of Hollis and Laura Yorgason. Leola married Lawrence Pole, December 7, 1937. They spent their married life in Claresholm. Leola was predeceased by her devoted husband March 26, 1986. She moved to Calgary in April 1988 to be close to family. She will be fondly remembered and sadly missed by her three children and their families, Doreen (Ron) Fix, Connie (Doug) Schram of Calgary, and Kevin Pole (Shelly Nielsen) of Conrich. She is also survived by seven loving grandchildren and their spouses, Rhonda (Trevor), Brian (Tracy), Stacey, Jeff, Kendra, Tyrel and Trent. Leola was predeceased by one sister Laura Baird and is survived by three sisters, Vera (Adolph) Johnson, Veda (Les) Mulholland and Shirley (Lee) Wesley; four brothers, Floyd, Bryon, Gerry, and Ed Yorgason; and numerous nieces and nephews. Leola was a Past Noble Grand of Foothills Rebekah Lodge No. 105, a member of the Claresholm Senior Drop-In Centre and a member of the Claresholm United Church. Leola will always hold a special place in the hearts of family and friends who have been fortunate enough to know her. Funeral Services will be held at LEYDEN'S "Chapel of Remembrance" (4079 - 1 Street West, Claresholm), on Friday, July 25, 1997 at 2:00 p.m. Interment will follow at the Claresholm Cemetery.
