- Shop now for incredible insights into your wellbeing -KNIGHT - On June 5, 1997, J. Peter "Pete" Knight passed away peacefully at the Peter Lougheed Centre at the age of 75 years. After learning he had cancer, Pete felt it was time to join his wife Mable, who had predeceased him, and be together on their Fiftieth Wedding Anniversary; they were married on June 5, 1947. Mourning his loss, while celebrating his life are his children, Diane (David) Maher of Edmonton, Peter Knight of Calgary, April (Jack) Walters of Calgary; and six special grandchildren, Kaelan and Alaina Maher of Edmonton, Michelle, Nick, Chad and Rebecca Walters of Calgary. He is also survived by three brothers, Raymond (Florence) Knight of Calgary, Don (Kay) Knight of Carstairs, and Bill Knight of Beiseker; brother-in-law Ken Hagel of Calgary; two sisters, Verna Scott of Penticton, B.C., Doris (Larry) Williamson of Sunnyslope; sisters-in-law, Margaret Young of Calgary, Vi and Sylvia Knight of Beiseker; as well as numerous nieces, nephews, relatives and special friends. He was predeceased by his brothers, Bob and Lawrence Knight and his sister Bev Hagel. Pete was born on December 18, 1921, in Crossfield, Alberta. He received his education at the Goderich school which was located in the Kersey district. He rode horseback to school and even though he was related to a famous cowboy, he could not ride a Shetland pony as it would shy and throw him off many times on his way to school and then would turn around and go home. After Pete finished his schooling he drove a general truck for his Dad on the farm, later going to work for Wilson Construction hauling gravel on the No. 9 Highway. He worked on numerous airport construction jobs during the war, throughout Alberta and B.C. before returning to the Irricana District in 1945 to take up farming. He rented and lived on land which used to be known as the Hehn's farm owned by his father. During that time Pete was active in the Lion's Club and enjoyed curling. In 1955 Pete moved his family to Calgary where he engaged in trucking for James and Reimer, Caskey Oilfield Hauling and Westburne Drilling. These past seven months Pete had resided in Crossfield at the Rockyview Senior Citizens Lodge. KNOTT - Ivy Jean Knott passed away peacefully at Rosedale Hospice on December 3, 1997 at the age of 63 years. Ivy was born in London, ON on February 12, 1934. She is survived by a brother Tom Ready; a nephew, nieces, cousins and aunts and uncles, all of London, ON. She was a dear, kind and special friend to many. Memorial Services will be held at McINNIS & HOLLOWAY'S "Fish Creek Chapel" (14441 Bannister Road S.E.), on Monday, December 8, 1997 at 1:00 p.m. with Rev. Bob Glasgow officiating. KNOX - Mrs. Melina Assunda Knox, a resident of the Bethany Care Centre of Calgary, Alberta, passed away at the Foothills Hospital on June 9, 1997, of heart failure at the age of 86 years. She is survived by a son Louis and Celine Mini of Calgary, Alberta; four grandchildren, Dave and Lynnette Tetlow of North Vancouver, B.C., Bob and Christy Tetlow of Annandale, Virginia, Bill and Kathy Tetlow of Surrey, B.C., Courtney Mini of Calgary; seven great-grandchildren, Megan, Faith, Norma, Paul, Leslie, Jason and Jeffery. She is also survived by a brother Bill and Darlene Galiardi of Calgary; nephews, Rick and Karen Galiardi, Terry and Lori Galiardi, and their children, all of Calgary. She was predeceased by her parents, Dominic and Giovina Galiardi, husband Hugh Knox, daughters, Norma, Clara, and a son-in-law Jack Tetlow. MEADOWS - Stephen J.C. Meadows was killed in a fall on Cascade Mountain on Friday, June 13. He is survived by his parents, Peter and Susan Meadows, his brother and sister, David and Jennifer, and his grandfather, Percy Holland, all of Cranfield, Bedfordshire, England. Stephen's colleagues and teachers at the University of Calgary remember him as a talented philosopher. He had a youthful exuberance and impatience. He was likable and very much a part of our lives. He was determined to win at everything including darts, NTN trivia, and crosswords. Stephen loved the mountains. He was pursuing his summertime goal of climbing two peaks each week when he fell. He will be missed very much by his family in England and by his friends. A memorial celebration of Stephen's life will be held on Thursday, July 3, at 3 PM in the Nickle Arts Musuem. All who knew Stephen are invited to attend. He will be buried in England. In lieu of flowers, Stephen's family requests that donations be made in Stephen's memory either to Stars Air Rescue, 1441 Aviation Park NE, Box 570, Calgary, T2E 8M7, or to the Stephen Meadows Memorial Fund, Department of Philosophy, University of Calgary, Calgary, T2N 1N4, which will arrange for a memorial to Stephen in the mountains (6/28/1997).
MEETSMA - With grace, faith and dignity, Henry Meetsma, beloved husband of Grace, went home to be with his Lord on Wednesday, October 1, 1997 at the age of 80 years. Formerly from Barrhead and Neerlandia, Alberta, he passed away peacefully with loved ones at his side at the Rosedale Hospice, Calgary, after a lengthy battle with cancer. He was born January 13, 1917, in Zandbulten, Friesland, and married Grace Runia on June 21, 1944. He enjoyed a successful forty-nine year career as a Mechanic. Henry and Grace immigrated to Canada in 1953 with three children and settled in Barrhead, Alberta, where two sons were added to the family. From 1965 to the present they resided in Calgary, except for a seven year period when he owned and operated Meetsma Motors in Neerlandia, Alberta. Active by faith and in deed, he helped build and served on council in the Christian Reformed Church. Henry will be sadly missed by his beloved wife of fifty-three years, Grace; their children and spouses, Gerald (Elizabeth) of Edmonton, Arnold (Emmy) of Calgary, Patricia (Jerry) VanderWal of Victoria, Henry (Margaret) of Morinville, and Richard of Calgary. He is also survived by his twelve grandchildren, Marilyn (Al), Michael (Brenda), Bryan (Emily), Jason, Sharlene (David), Arend, Matthew, Christopher, Stephen, Angela, DJ and Petra; and two great-grandchildren, David and Chantel. Also survived by two sisters, Marie and Janna in The Netherlands; and two brothers, Fritz and Siep in Germany. MELOFF - Dr. William Meloff. Bill Meloff passed away peacefully on June 17, 1997 at his home after a courageous battle with cancer. He was 57 years old. Bill was born in Winnipeg, Manitoba on April 3, 1940. He is survived by his three children, Lauren (Geoff) Sky of Edmonton, Dr. Rob Meloff of Calgary, and Liann Meloff of Penticton; his grandson Michael Sky; and his former wife and lifelong friend, Rivvy Meloff. He was predeceased by his parents, Milton and Sadie Meloff. Bill spent the last thirty years teaching Sociology at the University of Alberta where he was always one of the students' favorite lecturers. This was due to both his dynamic style of teaching and to his commitment to the students. His lifelong devotion to educating youths was also expressed through his years of work with Camp B'nai B'rith and B.B.Y.O. Bill was also involved with Canadian Rodeo groups as he spent several years announcing the Canadian Finals Rodeo and recently worked with the Canadian Intercollegiate Rodeo Association. Bill was always willing to devote many hours to local Jewish organizations and Civic groups. Bill was an inspiration to all who knew and loved him. He will be sadly missed and lovingly remembered. HOWARD - Helen "Louise" Howard (nee Akitt), loving mother of David and Nicholas of Calgary, passed away suddenly at her residence on September 15, 1997 at the age of 49 years. Louise was born May 28, 1948 in Calgary and attended Western Canada High School. Out of high school, she worked as an Optometric Assistant with her father for eleven years. Louise always enjoyed rejuvenating the numerous old homes her family lived in here in Calgary. The most important thing in her life was raising her two sons, and she supported their activities through much volunteer work. She also supported her former husband's business activities, when she was able. Because of her love and dedication to her family she will always be remembered. Besides her two sons, Louise is also survived by her parents, Helen and Don Akitt; her twin sister Donna Snell and husband Fred and their children, Diana and Alexander. She is also survived by the father of her two sons, John Howard; nieces and nephews, Quinn and Todd Davis, and Jamie, Jeff, Debbie, Lindsay, and Lisa Howard; cousin Jim Akitt of Vancouver, B.C.; and her friend David Hildebrandt. Louise was predeceased by her Aunt Hope Akitt.
