He was the beloved husband and best friend of Marion Christie; and beloved father of two sons, Norman (Maxine), Kevin (Joanne); and daughter Carol Juhasz (Jim); grandchildren, Linda, Bruce, Kaura, Jason, Shaun, Kyle and Megan; and two great-grandsons, Joshua and Corey. He is also survived by his brother Bryce (Golden); a sister Olliffe McNally (Bill); and a sister-in-law Peggy. He was predeceased by his brother Gordon and sister Ann. Norman was born in Regina, Saskatchewan on August 1, 1914. His parents brought him to Calgary in 1919 and then to Winnipeg, Manitoba where he attended high school and was awarded a scholarship to attend Colorado School of Mines. He graduated in 1935 with a Geological Engineering degree (Geophysics major). In that same year, he returned to Canada with Heiland Exploration (the only geophysical survey party then in Canada), on a survey for Imperial Oil, near Lethbridge, Alberta. Here, Norm made his first important discovery, meeting his future wife Marion. The Heiland job completed, he worked briefly for the Canadian Western Natural Gas Company acquiring productive leases in the Turner Valley Gas field, and then Seismograph Service Corporation in Texas, Oklahoma and Louisiana. In 1936, he joined United Geophysical Company's first seismic crew as a seismic computer in California. Norman worked for United throughout Canada, the US, England and Puerto Rico. Returning to Canada in 1942, he contributed to the discovery of the Jumping Pound wet gas field by Shell Oil in 1947. In 1950, he returned to Calgary permanently and started his own geophysical company, Exploration Consultants Inc. He was one of the pioneers in the development of magnetic tape recording of seismic data. In 1964 when the company was acquired by Independent Exploration, he became president of Canadian operations. In 1965 when Independent was acquired by Teledyne Exploration, he remained as president of the Canadian subsidiary and senior vice president of Teledyne Exploration of Houston, Texas until his retirement in 1979. Norman participated in the development of the modern Canadian Petroleum industry from Turner Valley to Jumping Pound, Leduc, Swan Hills, Rainbow, Beaufort Sea and West Pembina. In 1965, Norman received the Distinguished Achievement Award from the Colorado School of Mines in recognition of his contributions to the profession of Geophysics. Norman gave freely of his time and knowledge in the interests of both his community and his profession. He was president of the Canadian Society of Exploration Geophysicists in 1952 and, in 1963, he was elected the first non-US president of the Society of Exploration Geophysicists. He served on the council of the Association of Professional Engineers, Geologists and Geophysicists from 1970 to 1973 and as vice president in 1974. Through his retirement he continued to serve APEGGA in a variety of capacities including the Board of Examiners and Discipline committees. He also initiated the Canadian Endowed Scholarship Fund at the Colorado School of Mines for Canadian students. Norman was a member of the Calgary Golf and Country Club and a past member of the Calgary Petroleum Club. The family wishes to thank the staff of Unit 200 of the Beverly Nursing Home, the Rockyview Hospital Emergency staff and Unit 47 staff for their care and kindness to Norman and his family. MORRIS - John Rafferty passed away at 72 years of age. John is survived by his loving wife Joyce; three sons, Danny (Pat) and their son Michael, Phillip, and Graham (Robin); two stepsons, Glen (Sophia) Thompson and their daughter Jessie, Blair (Sandy) Thompson and their children, Bradley and Kelsey. John is also survived by his brother George (Joan) and their family. Memorial Services will be held at MOUNTAIN VIEW FUNERAL HOME on Friday, October 10 at 10:00 a.m. Interment to follow at Mountain View Memorial Gardens. SCHULZE - Hilda Emma passed away peacefully on July 8, 1997 at the Foothills Hospital. Hilda was born in Berlin, Germany on March 27, 1914. She immigrated to Calgary with her family in 1959. She leaves behind her sister Edith of Germany; two sons, Hans (Jocelyn) of Manilla, Fred (Helen) of Calgary; two daughters, Jutta Woppel and Eva (Peter) Kreiling, both of Calgary. Also five grandchildren, Andrea, Debby, Rick, Patti and Susan; and three great-grandchildren, Nichole, Courtney and Ashlynn. SCHNEIDER - Paul Herbert Schneider of Calgary, passed away at the Peter Lougheed Hospital after a brief illness on July 1, 1997, at the age of 71 years. He is the loving father of Garrett and his wife Kelli, and loving grandfather to Cody. He will be sadly missed by his four-legged friend "Tippy". Paul is also survived by his sister Edith Perry. He was predeceased by Helen, his wife of forty-four years in 1994, parents, Adolph and Lydia, two sisters, Elsie and Violet, and brothers, Emil and Albert. Paul will be sadly missed by all who knew and loved him. SCHMIDT - Harold Henry Schmidt, beloved husband of forty-one years to his wife and best friend Helen, passed away on December 5, 1997 after a courageous battle with cancer at the age of 65 years. Besides his loving wife, Harold is survived by his two sons, Darcy and his wife Kelly and granddaughter Madyson, and Daryl and Paula. He is also survived by his brother and sisters, Emily Twardy, Carol Plett, Ernie (Verena) Schmidt, Anne Schmidt, Jean (Elmer) Pagens; his mother-in-law Katie Jaworenko; and by many nieces and nephews. Predeceased by three sisters, five brothers and by his parents, Jacob and Louise Schmidt. Harold was born in Vanguard, Saskatchewan. For seventeen years he worked for Union Packing until he started Harold Schmidt Electric in 1969, until his passing. Harold belonged to the Elks Lodge and Golf Club, I.B.E.W. and bowled for thirty years. FOGARASI - John C. passed quietly away at the age of 63 at his home June 28, 1997 after a lengthy illness. He is survived by his loving wife, Maria. John and Maria escaped Communist Hungary in 1956 immigrating to Canada and enrolling at the University of Alberta from which they both graduated in Petroleum Engineering. They became Canadian citizens in 1962. John enjoyed a successful engineering career over many years in the Canadian oil industry and abroad. Eminently practical, he applied his skills to drilling, completion, testing and operation of oil and gas wells. He will be remembered and missed by his many friends in the industry and the community. Prayers will be held at First Memorial, 1635 - 17 Avenue S.W., Thursday, July 3, 1997 at 7:00 p.m. Funeral Mass will be celebrated at Sacred Heart Catholic Church, 1307 - 14 Street S.W., Friday, July 4, 1997 at 10:00 a.m. (7/2/1997).
FOLEY - Lyla May. On October 25, 1997, Mrs. Lyla Foley of Edmonton, formerly of the Calgary area (Shephard), passed away. She leaves to mourn, three sons, Lorne, Dean and Bill; one sister Gladys Robinson; one brother Gordon MacGregor; longtime friend Mrs. Helen Kilroe of Calgary; grandchildren and great-grandchildren, and a host of friends. She was preceded by her husband John Foley in 1953. We would like to thank Dr. Tom Ranieri and the excellent nurses and caregivers of Mother's at the Misericordia Hospital, 7 West.
