HAINING - Robert (Roberto) died peacefully at home, November 19, 1997, at the age of 67. Diagnosed with cancer twelve years ago, Robert's acceptance and perseverance were an inspiration to all. His sense of humour and dignity were his companions to the end. He is survived by his wife Susan McKay; his beloved children, Noemi Maitland (Jim), Debbie Kirkby (Lorne), Vanita Alexander (Greg), and David Haining, step-children, Jennifer Booker (Steve) and Rob Joyce, all of whom he was so proud of; his grandchildren, Peter, Ryan, Janell, Jenna, Alaina, Sean and Suzanne; also his sister Paula Thornton (John) and her children, Paul Thornton and Michelle Johnson (David). He was predeceased by his cherished daughter Georgina in 1981 and niece Lise in 1994, and parents, Eleanor and Paul Schreiner. Robert was the owner and operator of the Roberto's salons in Calgary for over forty years. His artistic flair for hairdressing flowed over to the arts and music. A classical pianist as a young man, Robert volunteered and supported the Esther Honens piano competitions for many years. As a father, Robert fostered a love of life, sports and a competitive spirit in his children who pursued challenges in the sports of alpine skiing, sailing, running and swimming. But for all of these interests, his grand passion was sailing. Robert, known as "Uncle Bobby" in sailing circles, sailed locally and internationally with great success, and in the last few years due to his illness put his energies into building the boats he so loved to sail. His handcrafted wooden boats are among the best in the world. Uncle Bobby would likely be upset if we neglected to mention he was the 1985 Canadian Fireball Champion. We all celebrate the life of this amazing person, whose philosophy focused on the positive. He always chose to "take the high road" through life. A special thanks to Bonnie Martin, Sally Lim, and Dr. D. Scott Ernst of the Tom Baker Cancer Centre, Dr. Stephanie Kozma and the palliative nursing home care team for their care and compassion. A gathering to celebrate Robert's wonderful life will be held at the Glenmore Sailing Club, 90 Avenue and 24 Street S.W., from 2:00 to 6:00 p.m. on Sunday, November 23.
