MILLIGAN - It is with great sadness we announce the passing of T. Joan Milligan (nee Campbell) on Monday, July 14th, 1997 in Hamilton, Ontario at the age of 74 years. In her last months, Joan waged a courageous struggle in response to complex vascular surgery. She was encouraged and inspired by the love of her husband of 56 years, D. Earnest (Ernie), and her four children, Lynne Wilson (John) of Newport Beach, CA, David (Carolanne) and R. Vance (Maureen) of Calgary, Karen Wookey of Toronto. Joan is also survived by her sister and brother-in-law, Betty and George Pilkington of Calgary, her seven grandchildren (Adam, Jennifer, Tessa, Jasmine, Jeremy, Rachelle, and Joshua), a large extended family, and friends. Born and raised in Calgary, Joan married Ernie on September 6, 1941 and together they led a fascinating life. She was particularly fond of the time they spent living in Italy and Ghana. After years of international travel and residency, Joan and Ernie retired to their beautiful "river house" in Hockley Valley, Ontario where they tended to their lovely gardens and cooled themselves at "the point" of the river bend. She loved her family deeply and it was truly a gift that she was able to spend time with them all in her final days. We will miss her always but she will be forever remembered and cherished in our hearts. One of her favorite and often heard quotes seems highly appropriate:"...'Tis a far better place I go now than I have ever been before." A special thanks to her beloved daughter, Karen, who selflessly and willingly provided months of care and support to both Joan and Ernie when her siblings could not be there. A memorial service will be held in Orangeville, Ontario on Saturday, July 19th, 1997. Funeral services will be arranged in Calgary, Alberta the location and time to be announced at a later date. The family gratefully declines flowers. If friends so desire, memorial tributes may be made to support spinal cord research through The Alberta Paraplegic Foundation, #305, 11010 - 101 Street, Edmonton, Alberta T5H 4B9 or to the Charity of the choice. "and how can words speak what only the heart does know?" (7/19/1997).
