St. J., E.D., C.D., former Commanding Officer of The Calgary Highlanders, former City of Calgary Alderman and Calgary businessman, passed away at the Colonel Belcher Hospital on Tuesday, December 29, 1997 at the age of 84 years. L. Col Tennant was born in Winnipeg, Manitoba on June 27, 1913. He attended school at St.Rose du Lac, Manitoba completing his studies at Lethbridge, Alberta. At the age of thirteen he joined the Royal Canadian Army Cadets in Lethbridge, later enlisting in the South Alberta Regiment. At the onset of World War II he reenlisted as a private with the 20th Battery, Royal Canadian Artillery of Lethbridge. He transferred to the 1st Battalion, The Calgary Highlanders on September 6, 1939 and joined the Battalion in England in December 1940. He was promoted to Captain in June 1942 and to Major in August 1944. L.Col Tennant was wounded three times while overseas. After the war, he remained with The Calgary Highlanders, serving as the Training Officer and in 1948, he became Second in Command of the Regiment. He was promoted to the rank of Lieutenant Colonel on July 1, 1955. In June 1950, L. Col Tennantmarried Joyce Jalland. As a Calgary Highlander, he received the 1939-45 Star-France and Germany Star-Defence Medal, the Defence of Britain Medal, The Canadian Volunteer Service Medal with Bar, the Canadian Forces Decoration Medal, the Victory Medal with Bar, the Efficiency Decoration, the Coronation Medal 1952, the Centennial Medal in 1967, the Queen Elizabeth Silver Jubilee Medal, the "D" Day Medal, and was Mentioned in Dispatches on three occasions. L. Col Tennant also served as an Alderman for the City of Calgary for twelve years.He retired from The Calgary Highlanders on September 24, 1962. On July 13, 1977, he was appointed Honourary Lieutenant Colonel of The Calgary Highlanders. In June, 1981, L. Col Tennant was received as a Companion of the Order of Canada. As a measure of thanks on the fiftieth anniversary of Holland's liberations, the City of Doetincham named a park "Mark Tennant Plantsoen - A Canadian Liberator" in his Honour in May 1955. L. Col Tennant's last public act as a Calgary Highlander was to lay the wreath at the Cenotaph on Remembrance Day this year, proudly wearing his Regimental Glengarry headdress. He is the beloved husband of Joyce Tennant, Calgary; dear father of Craig Tennant, Bottrel, Alberta, and Wayne and Pam Tennant, Vancouver, BC; dear grandfather of Justin, Jessie, Bradley, MacKenzie, Stefanie, Nicolai and Samantha. He is also survived by brother William, Lethbridge, Alberta; four sisters, Annie, Lethbridge, Claudia and Frances, Calgary and Zeda of Bermuda. He was predeceased by two sisters, Mary Petillon and Nora Tennant, daughter-in-law Candace Tennant and brother Rex.Funeral Mass will be celebrated at St. Mary's Cathedral (219 - 18 Avenue S.W.) on Saturday, January 3, 1998 at 10:00 a.m. with the Rev. MILNE - Laura Jean, July 13/28 - June 10/97. Our dear sister was taken suddenly while wilderness exploring in U.S.A. Predeceased by her mother and father Dr. J.D. Milne and Esther J. Douglas of Calgary. She leaves her loving sister Elizabeth Anne Smith (David) of Pine Lake, Alberta with her children David and Douglas of Calgary, Danny of Red Deer, and Duncan of Pine Lake. She also leaves her younger brother Dr. Douglas of Calgary and his two children: Michelle of Montreal, Quebec and Michael of Vernon, B.C. Also mourning her loss will be her cousins Dr. John Mahon (Florence) of Calgary and Esther Sanden (Emil) of Victoria, B.C. and her nieces, nephews and friends. Jean received her education in Calgary at Rideau Park and Central High Schools and graduated from U of A with a B.Sc. in nursing in 1949, following an extensive nursing career in public health at Trochu and Montreal, she became head nurse at the Calgary General Hospital. She continued post graduate studies at the Langley Porter Institute in San Francisco and studied archaeology at the University of California at Berkley, L.A. Her interests in people led to to an M.Sc. in social work at L.S.U. near New Orleans (6/15/1997).
SMITH - Mrs. Patricia (Pat) Grace Smith (nee Russell) of Calgary, passed away at her residence on December 20, 1997, at the age of 84 years. Pat was born March 17, 1913, in Greenwood, B.C.She leaves a legacy of love and laughter, so generously shared with family and friends."Contentedly weary of life, nothing to complain about." She is the loving mother and grandmother, of two daughters and a son-in-law, Pat Hogan and Judy and Greg McCaffrey, all of Calgary; four grandchildren, Jeff Scraba and Michelle Sorensen, Brigid Hogan, and Phillip McCaffrey; and her dear dog Meeka. Pat was predeceased by her parents, her brother Frank and her husband Fred. MILLER - Edith Agnes of Calgary, passed away on Friday, November 14, 1997 at the age of 81 years. Edith was predeceased by her husband Jack (Dusty) in 1989. She is survived by her children, Shirley (Gord), Jim (Ruth), Allan (Iona); and her grandchildren, Pam, Guy (Sue), Kim (Kevin), Jeff (Diane), Robin, Rhonda (Tim), Chris (Linda), Carrie (Chris), Angie, Trevor (Vesa), Tracey; and eleven great-grandchildren, Trisha, Graydon, Shelbie, Madison, Karson, James, Daniel, Shannon, Nicole, Jesse and Christopher. Edith is also survived by her brothers, Harold (Cathy) and Jack (Bunny); as well as two sisters, Elsie and Melba; special friends, Allan, Cathy, Jessica; and numerous nieces and nephews. Edith was actively involved in the Eastern Star Lodge, Meals on Wheels and the CPR Ladies Auxiliary. Edith was happiest spending time with her family and friends, who will miss her dearly. At Edith's request, there will be no Formal Funeral Service, however, there will be a Celebration Tea to be held on Tuesday, November 18, between 1:00 p.m. and 4:00 p.m., at the West Hillhurst Community Centre, Second Floor, 1940 - 6 Avenue N.W., Calgary. SKRIVER - Peter Gordon Skriver of Tilley, passed away peacefully in Brooks on December 21, 1997 at the age of 62 years. Gordon is survived by his loving family, wife Alice of Tilley; daughter Kathy and her husband Merlin Skanderup of Brooks; sons, Doug and his wife Pauline of Airdrie and Greg and his wife Leona of Camrose; seven grandchildren; two sisters, Margaret Daniels and Liz Daynard of Brooks; four brothers, Ken of Tilley, Bob of Calgary and Earl and Harland of Tilley; and numerous nieces and nephews. Born in Calgary on May 10, 1935 Gordon moved to Tilley in 1964 and had farmed in the community since. He was also employed as Realtor with Pro Real Estate for the past seven years. Interment Services will be held at 1:00 p.m. on Tuesday, December 23 at Bethany Lutheran Cemetery, Tilley. Funeral Services will follow at 3:00 p.m. from Trinity Lutheran Church, Brooks. Rev. PETERS - Mrs. Eva Muriel Peters of Calgary, passed away at the Glenmore Park Auxiliary Hospital on Tuesday, December 30, 1997, at the age of 85 years. Eva was born February 25, 1912, at the Devenish Apartments in Calgary. She had attended St. Hilda's Private School. Eva enjoyed gardening and being with people. Eva is survived by her son and daughter-in-law, Bert and Sharon Peters of Calgary; and three grandsons, Todd, Darryl and Kevin. She is also survived by a brother and a sister-in-law, Richard and Peggy Wallace of Calgary. Eva was predeceased by her husband Albert on May 7, 1996. PENNEY - Mr. Reginald (Reg) Penney, beloved husband of Mrs. Daisy Penney of Calgary, passed away suddenly on Thursday, July 17, 1997 at the age of 52 years. Reg was born in Sydney, Nova Scotia. He attended St. Francis Xavier University at Antigonish, Nova Scotia receiving his B.A., then moved to Montreal teaching history to Grade Ten high school students. In 1980, he moved to Calgary and taught at Dr. E.P. Scarlett high school, and then began substitute teaching. Reg enjoyed hockey, fishing and golf; and he always had a good fishing story to tell. Besides his loving wife, Reg is survived by two brothers, Al Penney of Ottawa, Ontario, Harvey Penney of Sydney, Nova Scotia; two sisters, Evelyn Staples and her husband Parker of Dartmouth, Nova Scotia, Germaine Heffernan and her husband Wayne of Sydney, Nova Scotia. He was predeceased by his parents. LEE - Yuk Jan, passed away November 6, 1997 at the age of 71 years. He is survived by two sons and one daughter-in-law and two daughters and two sons-in-law, Anthony, Karl and Elaine, Vivian and Genaro and Maureen and Stephen; as well as six grandchildren.
