- Shop now for incredible insights into your wellbeing -BURLAND - Dr. George Russell, beloved husband of Frances, passed away peacefully at the Foothills Hospital on November 16, 1997 at the age of 73. Dr. Burland came to Olds in 1953 where he practiced family medicine and general surgery until his retirement in 1989. George is survived by his loving wife Frances; children, Rich (Corinne), Rob (Sue), Brian (Lori), Margie (Dave), Trish (Dan); brother Jim; six grandchildren; several cousins, nephews, nieces and many friends. Dr. Burland obtained his medical degree from the University of Manitoba. He was a member of the Canadian and Alberta Medical Associations, Alberta Surgical Association, a Fellow of both the Royal College of Surgeons Canada and the American College of Surgeons. He was also elected life member of the Alberta College of Physicians and Surgeons in 1993. His appointments included Associate Clinical Professor at the University of Calgary, President of the Alberta Coroners Association, member Admissions Committee of the American College of Surgeons, Standing Committees Alberta College of Physicians and Surgeons, Advisory Board Central Alberta Cancer Clinic, an active staff and Chief, Department of Surgery Olds Hospital. Dr. Burland was very active in the community. He was past president of the Olds Elks Hockey and Curling Clubs, one of the founding members of the Olds Kiwanis Club, councilor for the Town of Olds, member of the Mountain View Health Unit, Olds Flying Club and B.P.O.E. (lifetime). A Service of Remembrance will be held on Friday, November 21, 1997 at 2:00 p.m. from the Royal Canadian Legion, Olds. LEE - Mrs. Ngok Nui Lee passed away peacefully at the Beverly Centre on Tuesday, October 14, 1997 at the age of 104 years. She was the beloved mother of Chun Tao (son-in-law Chu Lam Ng), New York; Terry (daughter-in-law Gam Yee), and Laurie (daughter-in-law Lydia) of Calgary. She is also survived by fourteen grandchildren and twenty-five great-grandchildren. Mrs. Lee was predeceased by her husband Henry in 1971, her daughter in 1984, her sister and her two brothers in China. Mrs. Lee was born in Toy Sun, Kwangtung, China and came to Canada in 1964 and resided in Calgary with her loving family. She was a member of the Lee Association. The family wish to express their appreciation and thanks to Dr. S. Grunberg and the Beverly Centre Nursing and Kitchen staff for their kind care and attention to Mrs. Lee and her family. MIKKELSEN - Jorgen Lauge Mikkelsen, aged 70, passed away at home on Sunday, September 14, 1997, surrounded by his family, after a courageous battle with cancer. He will be remembered as a loving husband and wonderful father by Else, his beloved wife of forty-seven years; his daughter Anette; and his sons, Tommy and Ronnie. He is also survived by his four grandchildren, Jeffrey, Karen, Brandon and Jordan; his daughters-in-law, Zelly and Susan; as well as family in Denmark. MIKO - Mrs. Sherry Joy Miko, beloved wife of Mr. Erwin Miko of Airdrie, passed away peacefully at the Peter Lougheed Hospital on Friday, December 12, 1997 after a lengthy and courageous battle with cancer. Sherry and Erwin resided in Airdrie for the last sixteen years. Mrs. Miko loved to crochet, do ceramics, gardening, traveling and many other activities with her family and friends. She loved the company of many neighborhood children. She will always be remembered for her generosity towards others and for her courage and strength, her sense of humor and for her spirit during her life and her illness. She will be greatly missed by her loving husband Erwin; a son and daughter-in-law, Joe and Dani of Lethbridge; two daughters and a son-in-law, Debbie and Rick Evans of Didsbury, and Shelley Miko and her companion Brian Cornforth of Airdrie; seven grandchildren, SarahLevon, Amanda, Heather, Ricky, Chancery and Chasen. She is also survived by her father Donald Wilson; her sister Carol Legge; and numerous nieces and nephews. Sherry was predeceased by her mother Marjorie Wilson, her grandmother Margaret Tobin, and her grandfather Louis Tobin. PECKOVER - Mr. Ernest (Ernie) Edwin Peckover of Calgary, passed away peacefully at the Foothills Hospital on Wednesday, December 24, 1997. Ernie was born March 19, 1928 in Thurcroft, Yorkshire, England. He served in the Royal Air Force and was an active member of the Temple Lodge A.F. and A.M., North Star Royal Arch, Cypress Preceptory, Scottish Rite, Al Azhar Shrine Temple Chanters, the Rotary Club of Calgary South, and the Royal Canadian Legion Branch No. 264. Ernie is survived by his wife and best friend Donna; together with his two daughters and sons-in-law, Heather and Jon Becker, and Dorothy and Don Lawrence; and two granddaughters, Meagan and Mandy. He is also survived by his sister Rosalie Parker of Edmonton. Ernie was predeceased by his parents, Charles and Sarah, two brothers, Bill and George, and his sister Dorothy. DITCHFIELD - Eugenia Ditchfield, nee Topuschak, passed away peacefully at home on September 9, 1997 at the age of 60 years, after a lengthy battle with cancer. She was predeceased by her husband William Ditchfield in 1979. She leaves behind three children, Traci Ward, David Ditchfield, and Zabrina Beer. She also leaves behind five beautiful grandchildren, Della, Edward, William, Meghan and Ashley; as well as four brothers, one sister and numerous other relatives. Many thanks to Pat and Claire. Your friendship meant so much to her. She is now peacefully with God and she will live in our hearts forever. CASTELLA - Mr. Ejler Max Castella long time resident of Red Deer, passed away peacefully at the Red Deer Regional Hospital, on Saturday, December 6, 1997 at the age of 87 years. Over the years, Ejler was active in the Red Deer Community, having served several years on the Red Deer and District School Board as well as teaching school at Central Junior High retiring in the early 1970's. He also served on the Canadian Mental Health Board and served on the church board and board of Camp Kuriakos. Ejler and Eva bought their beloved cottage at Half Moon Bay after retiring from teaching, and they enjoyed many wonderful summers there. He is survived by his three loving daughters, Lorna (Gary) Clement of Dickson, Alberta, Carol Payne of Kamloops, B.C. and Phyllis (Doug) Gillanders of Calgary; his grandchildren, Bret (Sharee) Clement of Airdrie, John Payne of Manhattan, Kansas, Jason Payne of Kamloops, B.C., Tara Gillanders of Calgary and Chris Gillanders of London, England; he is also survived by his sister Edith Castella of Calgary; and his brother Melvin Castella of Standard, Alberta. Ejler was predeceased by his loving wife, Eva in 1993. Funeral Services will be held at the Good Shepherd Lutheran Church, 40 Holmes Street, Red Deer, on Wednesday, December 10, 1997 at 1:00 p.m. with The Reverend Robert Mayan officiating.
