Ann Braid
September 28, 1939 - January 26, 2005

It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Ann Braid on Wednesday, January 26, 2005. Ann was born in Scotland and moved to Canada when she was eighteen years old, falling in love with the country she called her adoptive home. In 1997 Ann was involved in a motor vehicle accident in B.C. and her life changed dramatically. She did achieve a quality of life through her daughter Linda's care and devotion, the love and support of her family and friends, and with the commitment of URSA, SABIS, Sisters Care Home and Hillcrest Extendicare. Ann's bravery, strength of character, will, humour and her compassion for other people are greatly admired by all those that love her. Ann was predeceased by her parents Agnes and Sanny Bennie of Scotland.

She is survived by her sons Glen Alexander and James Douglas Braid of Vancouver, BC; daughter Linda Ann Braid of Calgary, AB; granddaughter Talecha Ann Emily Toomer of Calgary, AB; sister Muriel Griffen; niece and nephew Laura and Iain Griffen and great-niece Erin Stevenson, all of Alexandria (The Vale) Scotland.

Richard Shea Stone
March 25, 1921 - March 14, 2005

Born in Vermilion, AB on March 25, 1921. Dick passed away on March 14, 2005, just eleven days short of his 84th Birthday. Dick was residing in Trochu, AB when he joined the South Alberta Regiment, Tank Corp in WWII. He was serving with his brother Jack in Holland when Jack was killed in action. Dick returned to Calgary in 1947, where he resided until his passing. Dick spent his working career at Westroc (Western Gypsum) until his retirement. He was predeceased by his mother, father, brother Jack, sister Verna Kraft and his only child Rick. Dick is survived by his brothers Arthur (Kay) of Virginia Beach, Virginia, Frank (Jean) of Calgary and their family; his beloved daughter-in-law Eileen of Cochrane, AB and her family; and his niece Carolyn Bochulak of Calgary and her family.

A Memorial Service will be held at Leyden’s “Chapel of Remembrance” (17th Ave. and 2nd St. SW) on Thursday, March 24, 2005 at 3:00 pm with Rev. Philip Costain officiating.

Nouhad Hanna
February 18, 1936 - March 20, 2005

Nouhad Hanna passed away in Calgary on Sunday, March 20, 2005 at the age of 69. She will be lovingly remembered by her mother Jameley; brothers Asber (Sonia) Abboud, Karim (Minerva) Abboud, Nadim (Ismahan) Abboud, Salemi (terez) Abboud; sisters Souad (Fayz) Estephan and Wadad Nasr; as well as numerous nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her husband Nicholas, father Elias and sister Haji.

Relatives and friends are invited to Prayers at Leyden’s Funeral Home (17th Ave. and 2nd Street SW) on Tuesday, March 22, 2005 at 7:00 pm. A Funeral Service will be held at St. Vladimir’s Ukrainian Orthodox Church (403 Meredith Road NE) on Wednesday, March 23, 2005 at 2:00 pm with Rev. Ibrahim Chahoud officiating. Interment to follow in Queen’s Park Cemetery.

George Sorenson Whitehead
July 27, 1918 - March 19, 2005

George passed away at Calgary on March 19, 2005 at age 86. He is survived by his loving wife Ethel of 60 years; a daughter Sheena Parker; a son Lee-Noy and his wife Ella; three grandchildren: Taira and Lindsay Parker and Terri Whitehead; three great-grandchildren Zabrina, Wyatt and Damon; three brothers, Bud (Elaine), Jake and Jim of Claresholm; and many nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by a sister Stella and two brothers, Lee-Noy and Alfred.

George spent five years in the Army during WW II, serving with the Calgary Highlanders at Dieppe and all through Europe. He was discharged in January 1946, with the rank of CQMS. He was always very proud of his role in the War. At George’s request, there will be no funeral service. Friends and relatives are invited for a sharing of George’s life at Leyden’s Reception Centre (17th Ave. & 2nd St. SW) on Saturday, March 26, 2005 at 3:00 p.m.

Lily Rose Brown
July 13, 1912 - March 17, 2005

On Thursday, March 17, 2005 Lily Brown was called into the presence of the Lord at the age of 92, after a courageous battle with Cancer. She died peacefully at home surrounded by her family. Lily was predeceased by her husband William in 1992. She is survived by five daughters, three sons, twenty-one grandchildren, as well as numerous great grandchildren, relatives and friends. The family would like to thank her caregivers, Esther, Joyce, June and Nishma for their special care.

A Celebration of Lily's Life will be held at 11:00 am on Wednesday, March 23, 2005 at the Calgary Community Church (5136 - 17th Ave. NW) with Pastor Stephen Brooks officiating. Interment will follow at Mountainview Memorial Gardens. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made directly to the Billy Graham Association (20 Hopewell Way NE, Calgary, AB, T3J 5H5).

Barbara Kobsar
February 12, 1913 - March 17, 2005

Mrs. Barbara Kobsar (nee Meyers) born February 12, 1913 in North Dakota passed peacefully on March 17, 2005 at the age of 92 at McKenzie Towne Nursing Home. She was predeceased by her husband Peter Kobsar and daughter Doratha Johnson. Barbara is survived by her son Willie (Elaine) Kobsar, six grandchildren, ten great-grandchildren and many nieces and nephews.

The family wish to extend their thanks to the staff and caregivers at McKenzie Towne Nursing Home. Funeral Mass will be celebrated by Rev. Kevin Tumback at St. Albert the Great Catholic Church (10 Prestwick Drive SE) on Monday, March 21, 2005 at 10:00 a.m. Graveside committal to follow at Eden Brook Memorial Gardens.

Walter Harrison
September 23, 1928 - March 17, 2005

Walter Harrison passed away peacefully at Agape Hospice on Thursday, March 17, 2005 at the age of 76 years. Walter was born and raised in Hanna, AB and moved to Calgary in his mid twenties. He was an active member of Rosscarrock and Wild Rose Senior's Associations and especially enjoyed afternoons playing crib.

Walter worked as a color matcher with General Paint for many years. He was predeceased by his wife Moirig; sister Esther Dorn and brothers Leonard and Clarence. He is survived by brothers Harold (Margaret) and Albert (Olga) of Calgary and Edgar of Edmonton; sisters-in-law LaVonne of Hanna and Dorothy of Calgary; as well as numerous nieces and nephews. Funeral Services will be held at Leyden's Funeral Home, 17th Ave. SW & 2nd Street, on Monday, March 21, 2005 at 11:30 a.m. Interment to follow at Eden Brook Memorial Gardens.

Alice Beveridge

Alice Beveridge passed away peacefully on Friday, March 4, 2005 at Cedars Villa. She was born on January 18, 1921 in Perigord, SK. Alice is survived by her sister Alma Fisher of Kingston, ON; nephews Larry Fisher of Toronto, ON and Rob Fisher of Kingston, ON; as well as other nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her husband Don; and sister Marie Huck of Saskatoon, SK.

Memorial Mass will be celebrated at St. Michael The Archangel, 4718 Worcester Drive SW, on Thursday, March 17, 2005 at 1:00 p.m. with Rev. Leonard Hagel, Celebrant. Interment to follow at Union Cemetery. A gathering in Alice’s memory will also be held at Cedar’s Villa, 3330 – 8th Ave. SW on Friday, March 18, 2005 from 1:30 p.m. – 3:30 p.m.

Hanna Fares Haddad

Mr. Hanna Haddad passed away Tuesday, February 1, 2005 at the age of 92 at the Rockyview General Hospital. Mr. Haddad is survived by his son Fares (Nazira) and four daughters, Jeannette (Nick) El-Chakieh, Maha (Tony) Soghbi, Dalal (Jamal) Chamseddine and Jamal (Marwan) Shlah, as well as fourteen grandchildren and two sisters Rose and Mary. He was predecased by his wife Adma in 2000.

James Herbert Shinn
February 23, 1920 - January 28, 2005

James Herbert Shinn, beloved husband of Barbara Shinn, passed away suddenly on Friday, January 28, 2005 at the age of 84 years. He was born on February 23, 1920 in Winnipeg, Manitoba. Jim will be missed by his children: Jimmy (Karen) Shinn, Gary (Debbie) Laing, Debra Laing and Barbara (Bruce) Turner; four grandchildren and two great-grandchildren. James will also be missed by his siblings: George (Edie) Shinn and June Baswick, as well as numerous nieces and nephews.

He was a member of the Royal Canadian Armed Forces, serving his country in World War II and the Korean War. He retired from the PPCLI in 1970, after 30 years of service. In his retirement, James volunteered at the Museum of the Regiments. He will be deeply missed by all who knew him. Funeral Services will be held at Leyden's Funeral Home, "Chapel of Remembrance", 304 - 18 Avenue SW, (on the corner of 17 Avenue and 2 Street SW), on Friday, February 4, 2005 at 1:00 p.m.

Rita Agnes Fisher
February 19, 1923 - January 30, 2005

Rita Agnes Fisher (nee Kelly), passed away January 30, 2005 at the Intercare Brentwood Care Centre, after many years of failing health. A long time resident of the Intercare Chinook Care Centre, renovations required the recent move to the Intercare Brentwood Care Centre. Rita was born February 19, 1923 and lived her entire life in Calgary. She was particularly proud of this, especially when it came to cheering on her favourite teams, The Flames and Stampeders. In her younger years, although being forced to leave school early due to illness, she spent several years running her own hair salon. Rita was married to Bruce Fisher and raised three children. The marriage ended in divorce in 1971. Rita worked at various jobs until the effects of several strokes forced her to move in the Chinook Care Centre. Rita is survived by her brother James and family, daughters Maureen (Ron) of Medicine Hat and Colleen (Geoff) and son Wayne (Wendy), both of Calgary. She is also survived by five grandchildren: Kelli, Heather, Annette, Breanne and Coleton, as well as several great-grandchildren. She was predeceased by her parents, James and Agnes Kelly and her brother Robert. The family wishes to thank the staff of both the Chinook and Brentwood Care Centres for the care given to their mother over the years. Their care and thoughtfulness was appreciated. Although sadness prevails, Mom is finally free of the shackles that poor health brought. Funeral Service will be held on Friday, February 4, 2005 at 1:30 p.m. at St. Anthony’s Roman Catholic Church (5340 – 4 St. SW).
