Josef Mathis Boos passed away peacefully at his residence in Lumby on November 21st, 2007 at the age of 75 years. He will be lovingly remembered by his wife Ida, to whom he was married for 52 years, 4 sons, Stefan (Christine), Martin, Norbert (Manuela) and Mathias (Tess); 1 daughter, Beatrice; 11 grandchildren; 5 brothers and 3 sisters. He was preceded in death by his mother and father, 1 brother and 1 sister. Josef came to Canada to live out his childhood dream of being a cowboy, owning horses and living in a log home and remarkably was able to fulfill that dream.
The Funeral Service will be held at Bethel Funeral Chapel on Saturday, December 1st, 2007 at 1:00 P.M. with Father Richard Hanaczewski officiating. A Reception will follow in the Tea Room of Bethel Funeral Chapel and the interment will take place in the Lumby Cemetery following the Reception.

William Raymond (Ray) Marlatt was born on January 7th, 1922 at Lashburn, Saskatchewan, son of Huron & Annie Marlatt and passed away on November, 19th, 2007 in the Vernon Jubilee Hospital, Vernon, B.C. at the age of 85 years. He will be lovingly remembered by “his kids, ” Brenda & Dave Lorencz of Calgary, Alberta; his very special friend and companion, Elsie Mackwood of Vernon, B.C. and her family; two sisters, Maxine (Ron) Phillips of Edmonton, Alberta and Mavis (Ernie) Underwood of Ingersoll, Ontario; and numerous nieces, nephews and extended family. He was preceded in death by his beloved wife Elsie on April 8th, 1999; two daughters, Lynn in 1952 and Margaret in 1956; and one brother, Leonard. Ray’s chosen profession was that of being a school teacher and he taught in Enderby, Duncan and Chilliwack and their respective areas, then retiring to Armstrong in 1978. In 1989 he moved into Vernon where he remained until his death. Interment of Ray’s cremated remains in the family plot at Cliffside Cemetery in Enderby, B.C. will precede a Celebration Of Ray’s Life which will be held at Bethel Funeral Chapel on Monday, November 26th, 2007 at 3:00 P.M. with Mr. Brian Jackson officiating. A Reception will follow in the Tea Room at Bethel Funeral Chapel. It is with great sadness that we announce the sudden passing of our dear father, grandfather, great-grandfather and beloved friend, Harry Waselowich. Harry was born in Theodore, Saskatchewan on August 20th, 1922 and passed away on November 19th, 2007 at the age of 85. During World War II he served with the Regina Rifles in Europe. After the war he lived in Kitimat, Terrace, Armstrong and Vernon. He loved to garden and playing cards was his passion. He will always be remembered by his family and friends for his great sense of humour. Harry is survived by his loving family, one son Cliff (Jenny) Waselowich of Vernon, two daughters, Patricia (Gary) Tessaro of Vernon, Debbie (Monty) Mowatt of Groundbirch, B.C., seven grandchildren, Tyson and William Waselowich of Vernon, Michelle (Ryan) Beeton of Vernon, Dean (Sue) McNeal of Armstrong, Cale (Shalen) Tessaro of 108 Mile House, Karmen McLeod of Dawson Creek, Lee Ann (Dorran) Goodbun of Fort St. John, thirteen great-grandchildren, one sister, Vicky (Victor) Boychuk of Yorkton, SK, numerous nieces, nephews and his special friend Ruby Hitt of Vernon and life long family friends Soula (Peter) Vasilekas of Coquitlam, B.C. Funeral service will be held at 1:00 P.M. on Saturday, November 24th, 2007 from the Pleasant Valley Funeral Home. Cremation. A reception will follow in the Pleasant Valley Tea Room. Mildred “Millie” Elvira Fair passed away on Monday, November 19, 2007. Born to Anna and Anders Jung on January 10, 1912 at Bagley, Sask. Millie was pre-deceased by husband John, daughter Shirley Miller, identical twin sister Irene and seven other siblings. Mildred and John were married in 1934 and moved from Saskatchewan to Vancouver in 1935. They moved to Ocean Falls where they were partners in C and F Radio and airline agents from 1955 to 1973. They moved to Vancouver where John passed away in 1975. Mildred stayed in Vancouver until 2001 when she moved to Vernon to be close to her daughters. Her last three years were spent in Polson North where she received the love and extra care she came to need. She will be sadly missed and lovingly remembered by daughter Pat Oswell (Drew); son-in-law Roy Miller; grandchildren Jeffrey Oswell, Michael Oswell, Carolyn Bayley, Susan Hildebrandt and Karen Syska; ten great-grandchildren; five great-great-grandchildren; extended family and friends. With great sadness, the family of Nellie Laurena Craig announce her passing at Gateby on November 18, 2007. A descendant of early Bruce County, Upper Canada pioneers, Nellie’s immediate family also pioneered in the Wood River District of Saskatchewan where Nellie was born July 20, 1914, on the family homestead in Lafleche. In 1920, when her parents, Charles and Laura Passmore Young, became disenchanted with farming, they moved their family to Vernon, where Charlie began long-term employment with the City. With her older sisters, Nellie attended the fairly new Central School (Beairsto) and the brick schoolhouse in Polson Park. She left school early to work in Vancouver, Wallachin and at the National Café before marrying Alex Craig, a Kelowna baker in 1935. The family lived in Kelowna until Alex was called to duty upon the declaration of war in 1939, and was sent overseas. Nellie returned with their children to Vernon. In 1942, she began working at Stedman’s 5-$1.00 Store and when that building was sold in 1950, she stayed on to work with the new owner, Florence McDonald in the F&M; Ladies’ Wear Shop. She remained working there, under various owners until her retirement in 1984, when the store was owned by the Wilson family. Nellie was a founding member and 1956 Chieftain of the Kildonan Camp #166, Sons of Scotland and the Vernon Credit Union; a long time member of the Vernon Legion Auxiliary and Friends of History. Always a social person, she spent her retirement traveling to visit friends throughout Canada, Britain, Europe and to family in the USA. Nellie will be forever remembered by her daughter Lorna (John Bonner) of Sammamish, WA and their children: Barbara, Dan, John (Melinda) Bonner, Susan (Joseph) Bennett and Maureen (Gerald) Petz, plus 8 great-grandchildren; daughter Janet (Henry) Arens of Vernon and grandchildren Suzanne Craig (mother Carol Craig) and PJ Craig plus five step-granddaughters, children of the late John (Jack) Craig. Also remembering Nellie are her niece and nephew Joan (Harrison) Layton and Charles (Rosemary) Sheppard, as well as many wonderful friends, including Betty Russell and Joan Foster Sawyer, the daughters of Nellie’s two longtime friends. Nellie was pre-deceased by her husband in 1994, son Jack in 1982 and sisters Ethel Thompson, 1999 and Mattie Sheppard, 2002. A memorial service will be held on Friday, November 23 at 2:00 p.m. at the Schubert Centre. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to The Greater Vernon Museum & Archives, 3009 – 32 Avenue, Vernon, B.C. V1T 2L8. Nellie entered Gateby Intermediate Care Centre in 2005, and grateful thanks are given to the caring staff on 3W and to the friends who made time to visit Nellie in her new home.

Michael Daniel Hamilton was born on December 26 1988 in Vancouver and passed away suddenly at the age of 18 in a car accident on Black Rock Road in Vernon early Saturday morning November 17, 2007. He will be lovingly remembered by his mother Lisa Hamilton, father Ray Nielsen, and his two older sisters Crystal McGee and Danielle Hamilton, nephews Aiden and Oakley.
A celebration of Michael’s life will be held at Vernon’s First Baptist Church on Sunday November 25- 2007 at 2pm. Those wishing to make a contribution in memory of Michael may do so at the Memorial Service on Sunday.

Hattie Rose Johnson was born on February 12th, 1912 and passed to her rest on November 17th, 2007 at the Gateby Intermediate Care Residence in Vernon, B.C. She was the third and last surviving sibling in a family of six who lived on a homestead near Stettler, Alberta. Her parents were Hans and Hedwig Wettstein from Switzerland.
Hattie was preceded in death by her husband Karl Johnson in 1994, with whom she had made a home for 52 years (their final residence was a condo on 43rd Avenue), and her son, Delbert of Williams Lake, B.C., in 1999. Her surviving children are Sandi of Port Rowan, Ontario, Larry of Vernon, B.C., and Judi of Terrace, B.C. Her progeny has grown to 13 grandchildren and 13 great-grandchildren, with a fourteenth due in a week. Hattie was an avid bird watcher and never went anywhere for a walk without her binoculars.
The Funeral Service will be held at the Vernon Seventh-day Adventist Church on Friday, November 23rd, 2007 at 10:30 A.M. with Pastor Ed Teranski and Pastor Lee Patterson officiating. Interment will follow in the Pleasant Valley Cemetery.

HAYHURST, Ernest (Ernie) Alexander of Canal Flats B.C. passed away unexpectedly of heart failure at Peter Lougheed Hospital in Calgary on November 16, 2007. Born in Vernon B.C. on June 26, 1942. Ernie was the fourth of six children born to John and Winnifred Hayhurst. Their family was raised in the B.X. District of Vernon. Mr. Francis Henry McDougall passed away peacefully at Vernon and District Hospice House on Friday, November 16th, 2007 at the age of 94 years. He was a long term resident of the Victorian Retirement Residence. Frank was born in Maple Creek, Saskatchewan and educated in Weyburn, Saskatchewan. He was a veteran of World War II, where he served as a lieutenant-colonel. He saw action with the Loyal Edmonton Regiment in Italy, Belgium, Germany and Holland and received a Distinguished Service Order (DSO) for his outstanding service. After the war, he became Commanding Officer of the South Saskatchewan Regiment (Militia) and a hospital administrator in Weyburn and Moose Jaw. He was pre-deceased by his sister, Catherine in 1951, his wife, Viola in 1983 and his son, Ronald in 2000. He will be lovingly remembered by his son Robert and daughter-in-law, Evalynne of Coldstream, B.C. He is survived by six grandchildren, Greg (Kim), Colin (Victoria), Nona (Ted) Deena, Jeri (Kelly), Zoe (Jim) and nine great-granddaughters. A memorial service celebrating Frank’s life will be held on Thursday, November 22nd, 2007 at 1:30 p.m. in the chapel of Pleasant Valley Funeral Home with Reverend Ed Millin officiating. A reception will follow in the Pleasant Valley Tea Room. Margaret is survived by her loving husband Eric of 52 years, one son, Thomas (Loretta) Birnie of Lumby, B.C., two daughters, Christine Shaw of Vernon and Katherine (Doug) Samsom of Winfield, B.C., six grandchildren, three great-grandchildren, four sisters, Betty (Jack) Watt of Vernon, Olive (Glen) Swift of Vernon, Doreen Aitken of Langley, B.C. and Esther (Ron) McRae of Seattle, Washington, numerous nieces, nephews and extended family and friends.
