Simpson, Gladys Saturday, 24 Nov 2007
Vernon, BC
Gladys Evelyn (Peggy) Simpson (nee: Measor) was born August 12, 1937, in Windsor, Ontario, and passed away peacefully on November 24th, 2007 at the Vernon Jubilee Hospital, in Vernon, B.C., with her daughters at her side. She will be lovingly remembered by her children, John (Cathey), Peggy (Alan), Mark, and Mary (Martin). Her grandchildren, Spencer, Taylor, Derek, Janet, and Nichol will also miss Grandma Peg’s humour and generosity, as will her family and friends in Windsor, Ontario, Burns Lake and Vernon, B.C.
Peg was the youngest of seven children, and took delight in boasting that because of her small size as an infant, the maternity staff did not think Peg would survive. She proved them wrong, by living 70 full years, enduring life’s challenges and embracing life’s joys until the end.
She was a library teacher, a mother, a Windsor City councilor, a grandmother and a friend. She loved games, jazz music, Christmas baking, CBC Comedy, and reading.
A celebration of life service will be held Sunday, December 2nd at All Saints Anglican Church, at 2:00pm, with the Reverend Jane Bourcet as celebrant.
As an expression of sympathy, those who wish to do so, may send donations in memory of Peggy to the VJH Foundation “Light a Bulb” campaign, or Bridges to New Life Ministry 15654 Oyama Rd, Lake Country, BC V9V 2E1.
The family would like to thank Dr. Borchert and the ICU staff at the VJH for their compassion and sensitivity towards Peggy and her family.
HENDERSON, RICHARD Saturday, 24 Nov 2007
Vernon, BC
Richard Colles Brehon Henderson, P. Eng. - It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of Dick Henderson, after a spirited battle with cancer under the expert nursing care of his daughter Anne, Dick died peacefully at home, on Saturday, November 24, at 84 years of age. Loving husband to Joy who pre-deceased him two years ago, Dick and Joy leave behind their loving children Anne and Cecilia, their cherished granddaughter Richenda, and their caring son-in-law Charles. His youngest brother, Gerry, with wife Bev and siblings Lynn and Tara, along with beloved relatives in Ireland, Maura, Deirdre, Jeremy and many others across Canada will keep memory of his strong will and his love for life.
Born in Vernon, educated in Ireland, with a courageous heart and spirit of adventure, Dick took his family to many remote and exciting locations, building a legacy of multi-billion dollar dams on some of the world’s biggest rivers: from Kemano, BC, to Kaptai, Bangladesh, to Squaw Rapids, Sask., to the tropical water ways of Brazil. There he remained for 27 years taking a small Brazilian firm, Mendes Jr. to the eighth largest construction company in the world lead by many engineers whom he trained on sites throughout South America, the Middle East and Africa.
Dick would say that he had no music in him, but, although he suffered from deafness since the age of 16 and was also not able to carry a tune, Dick loved song, dance and entertaining. His most happy moments would be to see his wife Joy break out in song accompanied by such talented musicians as his Brazilian friend Dinilson. His joy in music and people also suited his nature for passionate debate. His will was strong as was his loyalty and dedication to his loved ones and friends.
As a tribute to his work and his spirit, his many friends from Brazil (Coelho, Luis Edmundo, Murillo and so many others) have reached out to him and have supported him in the final moments of his journey. His Canadian neighbors Donna, Ray and Jimmy have been at his side throughout as have his friends John and Francis who form part of the Masonic Community to which he and his father were active members and where Dick served as District Grand Superintendent, Rt. Ex.Comp Thank you all.
Dick left as he wished, with little fanfare but with much forethought. In accordance to his wishes, cremation has taken place. If desired, memorial donations to the Canadian Cancer Society would be appreciated. As per his wishes, friends will be received after 3 pm at the home of his brother Gerry on Dec 1 for a small Irish wake.
