Vernon, BC
October 5, 1937 - April 1, 2008
Eleanor (Ellie) passed away in the Vernon Jubilee hospital following a courageously met encounter with cancer. She was born in Kamloops, BC. and spent most of her life in Vernon. A very community minded and compassionate person she touched many lives. She was an educator, and teaching at all levels was her life. She taught school for 38 years, 32 of those at Harwood Elementary, supporting children, families and other teaching staff.
After retirement Eleanor became an enthusiastic member of the Coldstream Women’s Institute, where she had held many offices. Most recently she was the president of the district board. She organized many functions for the benefit of the WI.
As a long standing member and mentor in the Kalamalka Toastmasters club of Vernon, she also tutored and inspired the Miss Lumby Queen Candidates for many seasons.
Most Friday afternoons she could be found at the south end tourism office. Without her vast knowledge of the Vernon district, the staff will feel her loss.
She loved to travel and enjoyed many road trips. She had recently become a familiar face with the Wells Grey Tours. Eleanor’s beautiful hand work will be treasured by any of the fortunate recipients. She loved to go to Sunnybrae for her stitchery work with Shuswap Needle Arts Group. Often her Hardangar embroidery pieces were awarded top prices in the Armstrong and Salmon Fall Fairs.
Ellie’s family will sorely miss her. She is survived by her loving Mother and wonderful friend Helene Hatten, sisters and brothers Marion (Alan) Woods, Louisiana; Jim (Linda) Hatten, Armstrong; Joan (Eric) Davidson, Pender Island; Sheila Hatten, Hope; Allen (Mary)Hatten, Vernon; Norine (Heinz) Badertscher, Switzerland; Shirley Pretty, Coldstream; and Sharon Hatten, New Westminster. The family would like to recognize with great gratitude the special nursing staff on 3 East, Dr. Dyck, ambulance attendants and other medical people who touched her life over the past 2 months.
A Memorial Tea will be held on Monday April 14th from 1 - 3 pm at the Coldstream Women’s Institute Hall (9900 block Kalamalka Road). In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to a charity of your choice.
