BANNON, Gerald Joseph (Jerry) Thursday, 21 Feb 2008
Parksville, BC
Bannon, Gerald Joseph (Jerry) passed away peacefully in the care of his family in Victoria on February 25, 2008.
Born in Calgary, Alberta on November 3, 1921 to John and Annie Bannon, Jerry's family returned to Scotland where he spent the first nine years of his life, before returning to Calgary with his parents and four brothers. He attended St. Mary's school and developed a passion for all sports and an aptitude for hockey and baseball. In his youth and during the war, Jerry played semi professional hockey with many now famous NHL players. Later, together with his brother Vince, he played and coached both baseball and hockey in Calgary for many years.
Jerry was passionate about fishing, and spent many happy hours fishing in the rivers surrounding Calgary. After the death of his beloved wife Jean in 1979 he moved to Columbia Beach, on Vancouver Island and there became an avid ocean sport fisherman, known for both his success and his generosity with his catches. In the winter months he enthusiastically curled in Qualicum Beach, advancing as far as the National Seniors' Competition in 1994. In the summer months, in addition to fishing and keeping up his beautiful and bountiful garden, he was a keen golfer, and excelled in that as well, winning an Imperial Oil Annuitants tournament in the late 90's.
Throughout his life Jerry was known for his generosity and compassion. He was quick to provide assistance to those in need, with no expectation of thanks or reciprocity. He gave his love and support endlessly and unconditionally to his family: Brother John Son Brian (Tomoe), daughter Jo (Bill); grandchildren Bree, Peter (Lynn), Elyse, Gerry and Trilby, and great-grandson Jack.
Forever in our hearts, TBDITWWW.
Those wishing to join the family to celebrate Jerry's life are invited to attend the Qualicum Beach Rotary House on Sunday, March 30th from 2:00 ®C 4:00 PM.
Donations in lieu of flowers can be sent to the Palliative Response Team, Victoria Hospice Society, 3rd Floor, Richmond Pavilion, 1952 Bay Street, Victoria, B.C. V8R 1J8.
