Shannon (Johnston), Dorothy Alice Saturday, 16 Feb 2008
Cranbrook, BC
It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of our dear mother, Dorothy Alice Shannon. Mom passed away peacefully with her family by her side at Cranbrook Regional Hospital on Saturday, February 16, 2008.
She was born on January 7, 1912, in Latchford, Ontario. She was the oldest of four children. The family moved out west to British Columbia & the children were raised at Ta Ta Creek & attended Moyase Public School, the first school in Ta Ta Creek.
Dorothy met Charlie Shannon, who was a cook for the forest fire crews and their courtship began. They were married on June 15, 1934. Together, they raised Lorna, Larry & Linda, in Kimberley and Marysville.
Dorothy loved to garden & their yard & home were always immaculate. She loved to feed the birds & watch the deer that came into her yard. She was a wonderful cook & baker. We all enjoyed her treats, butter tarts, cookies, pies, etc.
She was a very kind & generous person to all of her friends & especially to her family. She was constantly knitting afghans, slippers, baby clothes, etc. for everyone. She made items for the Salvation Army for many years, right up until the time she entered hospital. She entered her afghans & other knitting & crocheted work in the Wycliffe Fall Fair & received red ribbons for her handiwork.
Dorothy loved to dance, being a country girl & Charlie would take her to the dances at the Ta Ta Pavilion, Bluebird Inn in Cranbrook & K.P. Hall in Kimberley (wherever they could find a dance floor). Sometimes when asked to go along with them, Lorna & Fred would ‘tag’ along too.
Twelve years after Charlie passed away, Dorothy moved to Cranbrook, living in an apartment & was of sound mind & good judgment for the rest of her life.
Dorothy loved to go to Lethbridge to the Chuckwagon Races. She was inducted into “The Pink Ladies’ group, wearing a pink cowboy hat at the races.
She was an avid Toronto Blue Jays fan & tried to watch all of their games on TV & cheer them on.
Even though Dorothy’s health was failing, she still had an excellent memory & a wonderful sense of humour. She enjoyed listening to ‘jam sessions’ in her home, with her grandchildren & Zoi supplying the music.
Dorothy was pre-deceased by her parents & siblings, Gordon, Sonny & Jack; her husband Charlie on June 5, 1977 & her son-in-law Fred Jackson on September 10, 2007. She is survived by her daughter, Lorna Jackson; son Larry (Marlene) Shannon; daughter Linda Shannon (Zoi Sallans); her six grandchildren, 13 great-grandchildren & 1 great-great-grandchildren.
A celebration of life will be held for Dorothy on Saturday, February 23 from 2:00-4:00 pm at the Bavarian Chalet Ballroom, in Days Inn, Cranbrook, B.C. (formerly the Town & Country Inn), 600 Cranbrook Street South.
In lieu of flowers, a donation may be made to the SPCA Cranbrook Branch at Box 2, 3339 - Highway 3 & 95, Cranbrook, B.C., V1C 4H6, in memory of Dorothy Shannon or a charity of your choice.
