Ritson, Alex Friday, 18 Jul 2008
Quesnel, BC
We announce the passing of a great husband, father, grand (great) father, Alex Ritson.
Alex was born on March 7, 1922 in Peace River Crossing, Alberta. The family moved to B.C. in 1937.
Alex’s budding hockey career took off at 18. He saw action in Salmon Arm, Vancouver Jr. Lions, etc... During his first year of pro he joined the Tulsa Oilers, Detroit Red Wings who sent him to Washington Lions, Prov. Reds and Indianapolis for seasoning. At 21 he reported bullet like shots and was drafted by the New York Rangers. His hockey career continued with the likes of Gordie Howe who was considered a friend.
In 1941 Alex moved to Victoria, where he met and married the love of his life, Barbara (Meldram). They were married in Victoria in 1950. They just celebrated their 58th anniversary.
Due to hockey, they eventually moved to Vernon in 1950 and to Quesnel in 1952. Alex was then employed with Weldwood, eventually becoming general foreman. Hockey continued with him playing for the Kangaroos, then coaching until 1964. Hockey was another great love of his life, as was fishing and hunting.
His family was first and foremost and was the best father you could hope for according to his children Craig (Ritson) and Donna (Tansky). He and Barbara retired to Penticton in 1990 and returned to Quesnel in December 2007 to be closer to family again.
Alex passed away quietly July 18 with family by his side.
Bye Poppa for now, we’ll have you in our hearts, until we see you again.
Alex is survived by loving wife Barbara, daughter Donna (Steve) Tansky, Craig (Ingrid) Ritson, grandchildren Stephanie, Jennifer, Kirstin and Brett, great-grandchildren Aura, Brandon and Gracie, brother Don (Marion) Ritson, nephews Brent and Dean Ritson.

NIELSEN, Anni Tuesday, 25 Mar 2008
Richmond, BC
March 25, 1925 – March 25, 2008
In loving memory we wish to announce the regrettable passing of our mom, Anni. Anni is pre-deceased by her loving husband, Georg and her sister Inge. She is survived by her daughter Leanne Bruce (Bobby) and her son Henning Nielsen and his children, Carina Lyth (Matt), Michael, Katie and Robert. She leaves behind 2 great-granddaughters Emily and Olivia.
Born in Copenhagen, Denmark, Anni met her husband Georg when she was fifteen. They were engaged Christmas Eve 1941. Following the end of the war, Georg and Anni were wed in 1946 and began married life in Copenhagen. Anni trained to be a book binder while Georg continued the family history and became a sausage maker. Their son Henning Georg was born in 1950 and Anni elected to stay home to raise him. In 1955 Georg became the youngest supervisor for the largest sausage factory in the country and the family moved to Aarhus.
In 1964 the Nielsen family arrived in Canada. They soon settled in Richmond, buying a house on Bairdmore Crescent. Georg pursued his dream of owning his own delicatessen and in 1967 Anni and Georg became the proud owners of Anni’s Deli. Two years later, Anni had a surprise when she discovered she was pregnant at age 43. Against her doctor’s recommendation she went ahead to have a daughter, Leanne Deborah in October of 1969.
Anni easily adapted to the role of Delicatessen owner. Anni’s Deli began at Cook and 3 Road, moved to Park and 3 Road and then became one of the original stores in Lansdowne Park Shopping Centre. When Georg succumbed to cancer in October of 1979, Anni and Henning continued the business together.
Retiring late in life, Anni was a fixture in her delicatessen and in Lansdowne Mall. The matriarch of her family, Anni not only lived together with her granddaughter Carina when she was younger, she also lived with Leanne and her husband Bobby on and off over the years including most recently on Gambier Island.
Anni loved gardening, watching figure skating and golf on TV, she loved great conversation and had a quick and sarcastic sense of humour. She made friends quickly, enjoyed as many of Bobby’s performances as she could, was fond of a good time, Henning’s cooking, strong coffee and Aquavit.
Although a survivor of many health challenges, Anni succumbed to a massive heart attack on her 83rd birthday. Her family wishes to thank the many health professionals who have helped Mom make her time with us possible. We will be celebrating her life, those who would like to share their fond memories and stories of Mom will be welcome. Please email blbruce2@aol.com or call 604-599-1171 with your contact information and we will forward invitations when the arrangements have been made.
