Ms. Florence "Muriel" Patterson
January 20, 1919 - September 26, 2007
Florence "Muriel" Patterson was born in Prince Albert, Saskatchewan, true child of the plains, although she later came to love the enchantment of the trees, mountains, and ocean of Vancouver Island.
Muriel spent her youth in North Battleford, Saskatchewan, where her father, Edward Patterson, a 32nd degree Mason, served as engineer of the Canadian Pacific Railway.
Her mother, Edna, was a homemaker, played music by ear, even the saw, was a member of the Rebecca's, and Worthy Matron of the Eastern Star.
At age 18, Muriel attended Normal School and subsequently taught in one-room rural school houses where all grades were present.
With the arrival of World War II, she settled in Sorrel, Quebec, where she assembled torpedoes for the Canadian Forces.
In 1950, after spending some time in Ontario, Muriel moved west to Vancouver, where, in 1951, her daughter, Barbara Lee was born. Following the birth of her daughter, Muriel spent six years teaching among the First Nations people.
Initially, she served in Anhousat, then Kitimat and Hazelton.
Muriel was deeply touched by the warm welcome of the Anhousat people and formed many friendships.
In 1956 Muriel returned to Vancouver, attending the University of British Columbia where she completed two years of university in one year in order to obtain her high school teaching certificate, graduating with distinction.
Moving to the Cowichan valley, she bought a house in Maple Bay.
She initially taught at Cowichan High School, moving to Quamichan Middle School when it first opened.
She spent the remainder of her career there, first as a teacher of French and English, and finally as a librarian among her beloved books.
Muriel retired from teaching in 1982.
During her teaching career she served as a member of many charitable organizations.
Following her retirement, Muriel filled her life with volunteer work, such as Meals-on-Wheels and helping to run the card shop at the Cowichan Lodge.
She was also involved with her beloved United Church and was a part of the Seekers until her debilitating stroke at the age of 87. Family then became the cornerstone of her life, centering on her beloved daughter and grandson.
Thanks, Mom, for all the support and for allowing me to be you little girl when I needed it most. Muriel died peacefully and beautifully on September 26, 2007.
Predeceased by her parents (Edward and Edna), her brother (George), and her baby brother (Douglas), she leaves to mourn her daughter, Lee Patterson; grandson Jesse Patterson, and his fiancé, Diana; niece, Lee Gibson; best friend, Marge Worthy; dear, caring friend, Duncan Scott; longtime friend and former student, Brian Wallace, and his wife, Joan.
Also to be mentioned are her United Church family, including Marian and Laurel; Sharon and Arlene, the world's most wonderful hairdresser's.
Not forgotten are the many other lives she touched.
Godspeed Mom and Grandma… be assured you still live in memory, poetry and song. We love you very much.
A memorial service will be held at the Duncan United Church, 246 Ingram Street, Duncan, B.C., on Wednesday, October 10, 2007 at 2:30 PM.
All who wish to join us to celebrate Muriel's life, please share with us as we say 'Good bye" to a most valiant soul.
