Mrs. Irma Kaufmann
October 3, 1919 - August 7, 2007
passed away peacefully on August 7, 2007. Born Oct. 3, 1919 in Kassel, Germany, Irma (Schweitzer) was the oldest of 3 children. She helped her father raise her two younger brothers following the death of her mother. Irma continued her care of others by working in a hospital and orphanage after obtaining her nursing degree. One day while having coffee with friends in a local café, a waiter handed her a note. It was from a gentleman that wanted to meet her and perhaps buy her coffee. That gentleman was Rudolf Kaufmann. A few years later the couple immigrated to Canada (1950) where they were married. Irma and Rudolf forged ahead with their life in Canada. Rolf, their first son was born in Victoria in 1953. Peter, their second son was born in 1956. During these years Irma and Rudolf bought land on Herd Road near Osborne Bay Road. It was a tough life, clearing land, trying to establish a working farm. Rudolf worked out of town and Irma had two young sons and no running water for a time. Irma resumed her nursing career following the death of her son Peter, retiring from Cowichan District Hospital in 1975. Irma had been a worldwide traveler with her husband Rudolf and friends Maria (Mitzi) and Louis Munzer. Even after the deaths of their husbands, Irma and Mitzi continued to travel extensively. Grandchildren Elisha, Wendy, and Derek, were the apples of her eye. Always a very involved Grandma, she spent many hours with her "enkelkinder", lavishing them with love and attention. Irma had a wonderful sense of humour, mischief, adventure and loyalty to family and friends that never diminished over the years. Predeceased by son Peter in 1967, and husband Rudolf in 1988, Irma is lovingly remembered by son Rolf (Susan); grandchildren Elisha (Dan), Wendy (Mike), Derek (Morgyn), and special friend Maria Munzer. Thank you to the staff at Cowichan Lodge for their loving care of Irma. A very special thank you to the Activity Staff. A celebration of Irma's life will be held at Sands Funeral Chapel, 187 Trunk Road, Duncan, B.C. on Monday, August, 13, 2007 at 1:00 p.m. A reception will follow in the Arbor Reception Centre. In memory of Irma, the family has asked that in lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Cowichan Lodge, Activities Program, 2041 Tzouhalem Road, Duncan, B.C. V9L 5L6.
