Mr. Joel Eric Swain "Skip"
August 11, 1939 - August 29, 2007
Skip passed away at his home in Sidney with his daughter and dear friend by his side. He is predeceased by his mother Margaret Helen and wife Heather Zimmerman. Skip is lovingly remembered by his son Michael (Darlene Roane) and daughter Lisa (Tim) Cambridge all of Calgary, girlfriend Charmaine Pasutti of Victoria and many close friends. After serving in the Royal Canadian Navy he was a member of the Calgary Fire Department and eventually became a BC Fisheries Officer working mainly in the Queen Charlotte Islands. He retired to Sidney and continued to enjoy the ocean, golf, gardening and especially vacationing in Hawaii. It’s a well known fact Skip avidly collected gadgets of all kinds and loved to teach us all about them. Skip loved life; he was warm, friendly and always kept a positive attitude, despite a lengthy battle with cancer. He loved parties and social events; he made a gracious host and a fun-loving guest. He will be missed by his many life long friends on the island. We are grateful to Dr Ambrose Marsh, the nurses of the Peninsula Health Unit (District 40) and PRT for their skill and kindness. A special sincere Thank You to Dr. Catherine Fitzgerald for her care and friendship during the past years.
At Skip’s request there will be no formal service. A gathering to celebrate his life will be announced at a later date. If friends so wish, donations in Skip’s memory may be made to the BC Cancer Foundation or the Canadian Cancer Society.

Mrs. Rachelle Marie (nee Chalifoux) Nedelec
November 21, 1918 - September 4, 2007
Peacefully on Tuesday September 4, 2007, Rachelle passed away at Richmond General Hospital, after an ongoing struggle with dementia and Alzheimer’s disease. Rachelle Chalifoux was the first born of a hard working French Canadian Family operating a dairy farm in rural Alberta. Rachelle began a lifetime of caregiving when orphaned as a teenager with four younger brothers. As a young adult in Edmonton, she began her nursing training at Edmonton General Hospital, graduating as a Registered Nurse in the early 1940’s. During these same years, Rachelle met the love of her life, Albert Nedelec, and began a life together which would span over forty years and nine children. Albert’s career with Air Canada led the family to various ‘posts’ across Canada, including Edmonton, Lethbridge, Moncton, Winnipeg and Richmond, with each stop bringing with it new homes, new communities, and new opportunities for friends and family growth. Rachelle’s devotion to her children, optimism, and unwavering selflessness guided her life and was felt by all who knew and loved her. Raising a large family had its challenges, but Al and Rachelle worked as a team to provide a stable homelife filled with laughter and togetherness. After the passing of her husband in 1980 Rachelle’s spirit continued to shine, undaunted, as an attentive grandmother, world traveler, painter, and Edmonton General Hospital Alumni volunteer. Rachelle’s smiling face, supportive words, and giving nature were welcomed by all of her friends and family as she continued with a busy life on her own. Rachelle leaves behind one surviving brother, Robert (Alice), four sons, Paul (Jackie); David (Janice), Dan, and Marc, four daughters, Madeline, Juliette, Lorraine, and Susan, as well as fifteen grandchildren and four great grand children. Rachelle not only leaves this living legacy, but a spiritual legacy of kindness, good humour, and genuine caring which will live on in the generations that follow her. Rachelle, the sister, the friend, the wife, the mother and the grandmother…..you have enriched our lives beyond any expectations, and we shall be eternally grateful for how you have touched us. We wish you peace, comfort and the happiness of being reunited with those awaiting you in the life after.
Prayers will be held on Thursday, September 6, at 7:00 p.m. at St. Joseph the Worker Parish, 4451 Williams Road (between Railway and No.1 Road) in Richmond, B.C. Funeral will be held on Friday, September 7th at 11:00 a.m. also at the church. Interment will take place at 3:00 pm at the Gardens of Gethsemani Cemetery 15800 32nd Ave., Surrey, (2 blocks east of the freeway cutoff - 152nd north). Donations in lieu of flowers to be made to the Alzheimer Society of Canada.
