Mrs. Doris Emma Irwin
January 1, 1916 - October 12, 2007
Born in Duncan in the early years of the twentieth century Doris was one of the original students at Queen Margaret's School for Girls, along with her sisters Aileen (Lock) and Beth (Pepler). After leaving school, she opened her own hairdressing salon, where she continued to work until her marriage. Doris flew on one of the first commercial flights from Canada to Europe after WWII to marry Frank Irwin of Birmingham, England. They lived for several years in England where Anthony (Tony) was born. The family returned to the Cowichan Valley in 1948 where daughter Jean and son Ronald were born. Doris, as the matriarch of the family, was the grandmother to Adrian and Duncan Irwin, Simon, Charlotte, and Sarah Norris and aunt to Michael and Carol (LaJeunesse) Pepler. Doris was an extremely creative artist. Her floral pastels, embroideries and watercolours are treasured by her family. Later in life she discovered her true artistic passion and explored the world of ceramics. She especially loved to decorate her white stoneware and porcelain with botanical images touched in gold. Two of the highlights of her ceramics career were taking part in an extended workshop with Robin Hopper at Pearson College of the Pacific and visiting David Leach's pottery in Devon, England. Doris was an active member of the Cowichan Valley Potters and she sold her work in several local gift shops. The family would like to thank all the staff past and present of Acacia Ty Mawr for their kind care for Doris in her last years. Donations in Doris' memory can be made to the Maple Bay Gary Oak Preserve or the Somenos Marsh Wildlife Society.
