Mrs. Maria Elvina Payne
February 8, 1922 - October 30, 2007
Passed away peacefully on Oct. 30, 2007 at the age of 85. Predeceased by her husband John of 44 years in 1990. Survived by her loving family: 7 sons, 6 daughters, 42 grandchildren, 27 great-grandchildren, 3 great-great-grandchildren, and 1 sister in New York. Prayers will be offered on Tues, Nov. 6 at 7 p.m. Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Wed. Nov. 7 at 10:30 a.m. with reception to follow in St. Paul Roman Catholic Church, 8251 St. Albans Road, Richmond, B.C. Burial to follow at Gardens of Gethsemani, Surrey, B.C. The family would like to thank Dr. William Wong and the staff of Minoru Residence for the excellent care of Maria.
Mrs. Mary (nee Schur) Duncan
December 4, 1922 - October 30, 2007
Passed away suddenly in Richmond, BC on Tuesday, October 30, 2007 at the age of 84 after a long, happy and interesting life. Predeceased by her parents Pauline & John Szczur, brothers Nestor Schure, Peter Schur & Bill Schure, sister Harriet Veito and son John Duncan. She is survived by her daughter Roberta, son Wayne (Heather), daughter Debra (Jamie), grandchildren Don (Sherri), Krysty (Joe), Richard, Tanis (Dennis), Brittney, ten great-grandchildren and brothers Don (Anne), Eugene (Doreen) and Ernie (Phyllis). We will always remember Mary because of her wicked sense of humour, forthright honesty, great integrity (as long as you didn't play cards with her) and because she always stood out in a crowd (she knew how to accessorize). She dearly loved her family and friends and always had a smile for those who visited. She was Mom or Gram to most of the kids in town and they were always at her house. She will be sorely missed and there is now a hole in many people's lives. A Service of Remembrance will take place at Richmond Funeral Home at 8420 Cambie Road in Richmond, BC at 11:00am on Sunday, November 4, 2007 (don't forget the time change on Saturday night). A second memorial service and internment will take place at a later date in Upsala, Ontario where she will be laid to rest with her beloved son Johnny. The family wishes to thank all the wonderful Caregivers at Fraserview who took such good care of "Miss" Mary, Dr. Lejay, Dr. Arthur, Dr. Lau and the nurses on 4 North, 2 South and Emergency at Richmond General Hospital. Mrs. Esther Florence Drayton
November 19, 1933 - October 25, 2007
She is survived by her husband, Richard Drayton and daughters, Debra Drayton, Cindy Huska and Susan MacInnes, and grandchildren, Matthew and Samantha MacInnes. Esther was a thoughtful, generous, and a beautiful lady, who always had time for the many friends in her life. She had a wonderful sense of humour and a great capacity for living life to its fullest. She will be greatly missed by her family and many friends. Esther wanted all of us to know, she has just gone shopping and will catch up with us later. A memorial service to be held on Sat. Nov. 25, 2007, 1:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. at the Richmond Funeral Home, 8420 Cambie Road.
Mr. Hessel Henderikus Scholtmeijer
January 1, 1919 - November 4, 2007
Hessel Henderikus Albert Roelof Scholtmeijer of Richmond, B. C. passed away quietly at home Sunday, November 4, at the age of 88. He was born January 1, 1919 in Groeningen, the Netherlands, the son of Hessel and Trijntje Scholtmeijer. He first worked in an office, beginning at age fourteen, studying at night to complete his matriculation. He met his wife, Audrey Marian Kent, in 1937. Although separated during World War II, they remained true to their promise and were married in Amsterdaam town hall on November 13, 1945. Their daughters, Trijntje Annette and Marian Louise, were born in Guildford, England. In 1953 the family immigrated to Canada, where Hessel worked for many years at the Vancouver General Hospital, participating in pioneering research as a hyperbaric technician. Hessel enjoyed carpentry, gardening, and stamp and coin collecting. His wife Audrey and an infant daughter, also named Audrey, preceded him in death. As a loving father and grandfather, he will be sadly missed by his daughters, sons-in-law Charles Desch and Ted Altar, and his grandchild Stephanie Helen Marquart. A funeral service will be held at 1:00 p.m. on Sunday, November 11 at Richmond Funeral Home, 8420 Cambie Road.
Mrs. Ada Ruth Lowry
December 29, 1911 - November 1, 2007
Ruth Lowry “Aunt Ruth” of Courtyard Gardens, Richmond, formerly of Apple Green, passed away November 1, 2007 at Richmond General Hospital at the age of 95 years. Ruth maintained her sense of humor, her mental and physical capabilities and her capacity to drive her own automobile until her passing. She was predeceased by her first husband, A.E. “Bill” Gotobed in 1959 and her second husband, LaMar “Tim” Lowry in 1999. She was also predeceased by her four brothers and her sister. She is survived by her step-daughter, Carol Bailey and Carol’s daughter, Michelle Kleist (Randy) and her two children Rylen and Brayden, and Carol’s son, Chris. Ruth is also survived by a sister-in-law, Elsie Palmer and numerous nieces, nephews and countless friends. At 9:30 am on Friday, November 9 family and friends are invited to meet at the Richmond Funeral Home on Cambie Street following which interment will take place at the Forest Lawn Cemetery. A memorial service for Ruth will be held later that day at 1:00 pm at The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, 8440 Williams Rd. in Richmond under the direction of Bishop Travis Wosley.
Mrs. Junko (nee Kojima) Hall
May 1, 1946 - October 30, 2007
After a prolonged and courageous battle with cancer, Junko passed away peacefully in the Richmond Hospital on Tuesday, October 30th . Throughout her long illness she was always cheerfully positive and treated every day as a gift. She will be deeply missed by her husband of 28 years, Kenneth, and her children Kim (Silas), Tammy and Kenny. Predeceased by her mother Hisako, she will be mourned in Yokohama by her father Keiji, brother Hiroshi and sister Midori. In addition, she will be sorely missed by numerous aunts, uncles, cousins, nieces and nephews and all of her many friends whom she loved as family. Before her marriage she traveled extensively in Asia, the US, UK and Europe. In her travels she made many contacts that led to long-lasting friendly relationships. Married in Tokyo, Junko immigrated to Canada in 1979 settling with her husband in Richmond and later becoming a Canadian citizen. Her warm and generous, outgoing nature made her many friends locally. She participated enthusiastically in events surrounding her children's education and was deeply supportive. Always putting the needs of others before herself she touched many lives and will be remembered fondly by all those who knew her. A memorial service will be held in the Richmond Funeral Home, 8420 Cambie Road, on Thursday, November 15th at 1:00 p.m. with a reception to follow. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that those who wish, may make donations in her name to the Bc Cancer Foundation.
Dr. Albert "Bert" Leonard Farley
September 12, 1920 - November 1, 2007
Bert died peacefully at Richmond Hospital at 87 years old on November 1st at 7:30 pm after a sudden illness. He had a rich and well spent life. In the 40s, after attending Royal Roads in Victoria, he became a navigating officer on a Corvette and spent the war years in the North Atlantic between Halifax and Europe, escorting convoys. He married Iris Dickson during this time. Upon returning to Canada at war's end, he continued his education at UBC, ultimately earning his PhD in cartography at the University of Wisconsin. The 50s were spent at the parliament buildings in Victoria, where he was employed by the government as a geographer and collaborated to write the first BC Resources Atlas. In the 60s he earned a professorship at UBC where he lectured and researched for twenty years. Just before his retirement, he wrote the new BC Resources Atlas, still in use today. His first wife, Iris, died of cancer soon after he retired and a few years later, he met and married Sylvia Munro. Together, they had a chance to travel the world. Africa, South America, Europe, Mexico, Australia, and Japan were just some of their destinations. He loved music and dancing and he and his beloved Sylvia cut fine figures on the dance floor of many a cruise ship. Bert was loved and admired by all who knew him. He was a gentle, patient and caring man, one who made the world a better place. His wife Sylvia dearly misses him. He is survived and will always be loved by his daughters Barbara (husband Ed) and Wendy (husband John) and his grandchildren, Tula, Hunter, Peter, John, Ryan, and Breanna. A celebration of his life will be held at Richmond Funeral Home on 8420 Cambie Road on Saturday, November 10th, at 12:00 p.m.
Mrs. Sylvia Rosalynd Toop
December 12, 1942 - October 26, 2007
Passed away in Richmond at the age of 64 from cancer. Funeral Services will be held on November 1, 2007 at 1:00 p.m. with a visitation at 12:00 to 12:45 p.m. at The Our Saviour Lutheran Church in Richmond. Interment will be in Rosthern, Saskatchewan. She leaves behind her loving husband, Gary Toop; and her mother, Irene Markwark; her daughters, Michele (Petri) and Lara; brother, Winston; and grandson, Jesse. She was predeceased by her father, Reinhold Markwar.
