David Angus Cunliffe

With deep sorrow the family regrets to announce the death of David Angus Cunliffe which occurred at his home in British Columbia on Wednesday, Feb. 7, 2001.
Born in Sydney Mines, he was the son of Kathlene Hayward and the late Peter Cunliffe. He was retired from the military and was an active member in his local legion.
David is survived by his sons, Christopher and Patrick, both of Vancouver; sisters, Christine, Pam, Millie, Jeannie and Bernadine; brothers, Peter, Kenneth and Alex. David will be dearly missed by longtime friend, Jackie Burgoyne.
Besides his father, he was predeceased by sisters, Mary, Kathy and Doreen and brothers, William, Leonard and John.
Funeral services for David will held this week in British Columbia.
Harold Ross

Harold Ross, 69, died in Vancouver in January, 2001.
Born in Middle River, Victoria County, N.S., he was the son of the late Catherine and Oswell Ross, Middle River.
He was a retired master corporal from the RCAF and later retired as an employee of Canadian Airlines.
He is survived by two brothers, Edwin (Mary), River Denys and Donald (Helen), Baddeck.
Cremation has taken place. A memorial service and burial will take place in Middle River at a later date.

Roberta Dufour
38, Vancouver
Margaret Violet Roberta Dufour, 38, Vancouver, B.C., formerly of Sydney, passed away in Vancouver, after a short illness, on Friday, Feb. 16, 2001.
Born in Sydney, she was a daughter of Royce (Ellis) Ramsey and the late Robert Dufour.
Besides her mother, she is survived by her ex-husband, Joseph Snow; daughter, Jolene Rita Snow, Sydney; sisters, Rachel Anderson, Lower Sackville, Rita Anderson, North Sydney, and Roxanne Hart, Dartmouth; brother, William Ramsey, Sydney; step-father, Glenn Ramsey and several nieces and nephews.
Visitation will be held at Sydney Memorial Chapel, Wednesday 7-9 p.m. A memorial service will be held in the chapel, Thursday 10:30 a.m. with Rev. Angus MacDougall officiating.
Donations may be made to a charity of choice.
Virginia (Johnson) Simms
67, Victoria, B.C.
Virginia (Johnson) Simms, 67, of Victoria, B.C., formerly of Chapel Island, Richmond County, passed away Sunday, Feb. 18, 2001, at the Victoria Royal Jubilee Hospital, B.C., after a brief illness.
Born in Bridgeport, N.S., she was the daughter of the late Richard and Esther (Paul) Johnson.
She was a member of Our Lady Queen of Peace, Victoria, B.C. and St. Anne’s Mission, Chapel Island.
In her earlier years, she attended the OLA convent in Arichat and later served in the Royal Canadian Air Force. In 1955 while stationed in France, she was awarded One Flight Wing. She worked for General Motors in Oshawa, Ont. until her retirement in 1998. She was a member of the Royal Canadian Legion, Branch No. 43, Oshawa, Ont.
She is survived by one son, Norman (Amanda); two daughters, Wendy and Lori (Pat) Byrne, B.C.; sisters, Sarah Denny, Eskasoni, Cecelia Marshall, Jean Doucette, and Irene Johnson, Chapel Island, Barbara Johnson, Greenfield, and Florence Johnson, Membertou; brothers, John D., Arthur, Danny, all of Chapel Island, and George, Hay Cove; aunts, Caroline Gould, Waycobah, Dr. Margaret Johnson, Eskasoni; four grandchildren, Jason, Jade, Joshua and Jamie; one Godchild, Virginia Marshall and numerous nieces and nephews.
She was predeceased by brothers, Wilfred Henry, Edward and a brother in infancy; sisters, Alfreda and Pauline Gould.
Cremation has taken place. A memorial mass was held on Monday, Feb. 26, 2001, with Rev. Duncan MacIsaac officiating. Members of Royal Canadian Legion, Branch No. 47 paid tribute to their late comrade.
Lawrence A.C. Burke
75, Courtney, B.C.
Lawrence A.C. Burke, 75, a resident of British Columbia for the past 40 years, formerly of Inglis Street, Sydney, passed away Friday, March 23, 2001, at the home of his sister and brother-in-law, Isabel and Frank Kehoe of Halifax.
Born in Sydney, he was the son of the late George and Catherine (MacNeil) Burke.
In his earlier years, he was employed with Sydney Steel Corp., while living in B.C. Lawrence operated heavy equipment in the logging industry for many years until 1991.
He is survived by four sisters, Mrs. Jennie Nicholson, Schenacadie, Isabel Kehoe (Frank), Halifax, Mrs. Helen Martell, Halifax, and Mrs. Marian LaBrie (Gervais), Halifax; one brother, Gerald (Marina), Sarnia, Ont. Also survived by numerous nieces and nephews and a special niece, Janice.
Predeceased by two sisters, Peggy MacDonald and Eileen in infancy.
The late Mr. Burke will have visitation in T.W. Curry Parkview Chapel, Monday from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m., with one hour visitation Tuesday in St. Barra’s Church, Christmas Island. Funeral mass will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday in St. Barra’s Church with Rev. J.A. MacNeil officiating. Interment in the parish cemetery.

Earl Verner Crocker

The death occurred in Vancouver Thursday, April 5, 2001, of Earl Verner Crocker.
Born in Glace Bay, he was the son of the late Robert and Mildred Crocker, who resided on Winona Street.
He was a member of St. Mary’s Church. He served with the RCAF during the war. After coming out of the service he settled in Vancouver.
He will be sadly missed by his sisters, Clarice Johnstone, Alice Johnstone, Mildred Campbell, Dorothy Quinton.
He was predeceased by his brothers, Graham, Ernest, Lorenzo, Cameron, Gordon, Arthur, Grant and sisters, Hazel Matheson and Marjorie MacQuarrie.
The funeral arrangements are incomplete but burial will be in Vancouver.
Frances (Frankie) MacDonald

Frances (Frankie) MacDonald, beloved wife of Garfield (Gary) MacDonald, died on Saturday, April 21, 2001, at St. Vincent’s Arbutus in Vancouver.
Frankie was born in New Waterford, Cape Breton Island, the daughter of Jack MacMaster and Mary Jane MacEachern.
Frankie was a graduate of St. Joseph’s School of Nursing in Glace Bay, N.S., and for a time worked in the operating room of St. Paul’s Hospital in Vancouver.
She is survived by son, Kevin, married to Darlene Clifton, Regina; daughters, Kathy MacDonald, Newfoundland, and Karen Harvey, Vancouver; sisters, Mary Sargent, Bowling Green, Ky., and Clair MacLelland, Toronto; grandchildren, Tannis, Lauren and Taylor MacDonald, Regina, Sara Harvey Bennett and Kevin Harvey, Vancouver, Spencer and Jennifer Broadbent, Vancouver; great-grandchildren, Alice and Keith and two more on the way. Numerous nieces and nephews reside in Cape Breton, Halifax and Kentucky.
In lieu of flowers, donations to the Alzheimer’s Society would be appreciated.
A funeral mass was held Wednesday, April 25 at St. John The Apostle Church at 39th and Trafalgar in Kerrisdale.
