Will, Elane
1924 - Oct 22, 2009
Elane was born in Calgary, Alberta, in 1924, the granddaughter of Alberta pioneer George Lane, one of the legendary founders of the Calgary Exhibition and Stampede.
She spent her youth on the Oxley Ranch west of Stavely, Alberta, in the heart of ranching country.
Her older sister, Betty, and younger brother, Jim, are both deceased.
Elane was raised on a ranch with cattle and horses in the Porcupine Hills on Willow Creek.
Her love and affinity for animals lasted her entire life.
Elane was schooled in a one-room school house and after completing business courses, she worked at the High River Air Force base.
Subsequently, she graduated as a teacher from the School for the Blind in Vancouver, where she had a rewarding career.
Returning to the ranch for a summer vacation, she rekindled her friendship with William (Red) McDougall whom she subsequently married.
Red and Elane raised a family of four: Peggy Barr (Brent), Alec McDougall (Gail), Pat McDougall (Bruce Nelson) and the youngest, Bill McDougall.
Raising her children as the wife of an Alberta Wheat Pool agent, she lived in many company houses in Southern Alberta communities including Purple Springs, Magrath, Mazeppa and Aldersyde.
As a young wife and mother with four young children, Elane was widowed in 1957.
Moving to High River, she purchased a small home and obtained employment as secretary/receptionist for the local Department of Agriculture, the Snodgrass Funeral Home and later, at the law offices of Colin Heseltine.
At this time, John Will came into her life.
A long-time friend of the family, John was a mixed farmer north of Mazeppa, who often lent the McDougall's work horses for their vegetable garden.
Marrying John in 1960, she moved to the farm, where she was very active in daily farm life, the High River Anglican Altar Guild, Women's Institute, and the Glady's Ridge community.
John and Elane retired to an acreage in Lumby, B.C. in 1979, where they continued to enjoy the rural life.
As John's health deteriorated, Elane and John moved to Vernon, where she continued to be very active in the Women's Institute and the Anglican Church.
Elane remained devoted to John and nursed him daily at the Noric Nursing Home, until his death in April of 2000.
After John's death, Elane lived alone in her Vernon home surrounded by her many close friends and neighbours.
A caring and active person, she continued to drive her friends to medical appointments and social events up until her death.
She always enjoyed spending time with family and friends.
Elane will be missed and remembered by her children, their spouses and her grandchildren: Karla Forster, Kathryne Johnstone (Jeff), Michael McDougall and Cheryl Molyneaux and her great-grandchildren: Spencer Forster, Nathan and Kaylee Johnstone.
She will also be missed by all the grandchildren that continued to enlarge her loving family: Angie, Ian, Meredith, Libby, John, Mike Marina, and Tanya.
Elane was a loving mother, grandmother and great-grandmother.
Elane gave the gift of unconditional love, honesty and humility her whole life.
She taught the meaning of sharing and physical and spiritual sustenance.
Her legacy of insight, humour, thoughtfulness and humanity lives on in her loving family.
