FERGUSON_ Judge Mervin E. Ferguson, passed away suddenly on Friday, June 16, 2000, in his 91st year. He leaves to mourn his loving wife, Marion; his only sister Esther McShane; and his cousin Zella Armour. Also missing him are Marion's daughters JoAnne Bennett (Arnold), Susan Marshall (Ralph); his wonderful grandchildren and great-grandchildren of which he was very proud. He is also fondly remembered by his niece and nephews, and many close friends. Merv was predeceased by his first wife Katherine Mary (Mae); and daughter Marilyn. Judge Ferguson enjoyed a full life of notable service as an administrator of the UBC Endowment Lands as a Provincial Court Judge and as a builder and participant in amateur sport. He was an executive member of the Commonwealth Games and the Canadian Olympic Association and is recognized in three Halls of Fame - BC Sports, AAU of Canada and Canadian Lacrosse. Mervin also received the Order of Canada. A celebration of his life will be held at Kerrisdale Presbyterian Church, 2733 West 41st Avenue, Vancouver, on Wednesday, June 21st at 2:00 p.m, Rev. FLITTON - Ralph Johnston. Born in Peterborough, Ont. on July 18, 1918. Died peacefully in Victoria on June 17, 2000. Survived by his loving daughters Gail (Don Dixon), Deborah and Lyn (Joel Poslums), and his grandchildren Thomas Clarke and Emma and Simon Poslums. He will also be greatly missed by his dear brother Kenneth and his niece and nephews, Corinne, Robert and Edward. While attending West Hill High School in Montreal, Ralph was a leading Shakespearean actor and later in the McGill Arts faculty, he acted extensively with the Montreal Repertory Theatre. A graduate of McGill University (BA '42), Ralph served as Lieutenant Commander in the Royal Canadian Navy during WW II. In June of 1944, he led the rescue of survivors of the torpedoed ship "HMCS Valleyfield" in the North Atlantic and was "Mentioned in Dispatches." Ralph worked for Imperial Oil Limited in Toronto, Vancouver and Penticton, before joining the faculty of the newly inaugurated Langara College in 1965. He was a popular business teacher there until his retirement in 1983. He was also an active member of the Vancouver Community Arts Council for 25 years and was instrumental in the establishment of the Centennial Museum complex in Vanier Park. Upon leaving Langara, he earned his real estate license and worked in that field for several years before moving to Parksville, B.C. He has been living in Victoria since 1995. Ralph lived a very good life; he was a keen student of nature, loved good books and interesting people and enjoyed travel to many places. He appreciated fine art and music, especially jazz. His family particularly wish to thank the staff at Oak Bay Lodge for their loving care of Ralph in the past year. FRIESEN - Elizabeth (Betty) nee Schmidt passed away at the Vancouver Hospital and Health Sciences Centre (V.G.H.) on Thursday, June 15, 2000 at the age of 73 years. Betty was born on March 23, 1927 in Coaldale, Alberta and moved to Aldergrove, B.C. in 1943. Betty was predeceased by her husband Peter on December 31, 1999 and is survived by her 5 children and 11 grandchildren. Ron (June) Friesen, Shawn and Wendel of Phoenix, Arizona, U.S.A.; Loretta (Bob) Penney, Laura and Mark of Tsawassen, B.C.; Evelyn Faulkner, Jason, Darla and Andrea of Aldergrove, B.C.; Dorothy (Bob) Johnson, Kurtis and Erin of Abbotsford, B.C.; and Allan Friesen (Darlene), Angela and Nicole of Abbotsford, B.C. She is also survived by one sister Tina (Nick) Enns and 6 brothers, Jake (Neta), John (Olga), Bill (Mary), Isaac (Agnes), Dave (Mary) and Nick (Jacqui). Betty was predeceased by two brothers, Henry and George. A special thanks to Dr. Allardyce, Vancouver Hospital and Health Services Centre (V.G.H.) and the caring nursing staff of 8 West and I.C.U. Betty was married to Peter for 52 years and together they dedicated their lives to their family, their farm, their community and to their church. Betty loved to garden and won awards for her beautiful flowers and lovely landscaped gardens. Memorial service will be held on Wednesday, June 21, 2000 at 11:00 a.m. from South Abbotsford M.B. Church at 32424 Huntingdon Rd, Abbotsford, B.C., Pastor Dave Epp officiating. A private family burial will be held at South Poplar Cemetery. Woodlawn Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements. HALES - Jeanie Grant Milne. Born in Glasgow, Scotland on June 22, 1905. Passed away peacefully at Surrey Memorial Hospital on Thursday, June 15, 2000. Predeceased by her loving husband Leonard Leslie and by her brother Robert Logan. Survived by her loving daughter Sheila Kerr (Bill). Predeceased by his parents, Sylvester Beckwith and Delsena Mitchell; brother Orville of California, and son-in-law Alan Messent. Bert owned and operated Beckwith Electric Ltd from 1939 to 1964.
