NEW - Eva Viola, born August 1, 1906, in Portage la Prairie, Manitoba, passed away at Cascade Residence, Burnaby Hospital on October 4, 2000. Predeceased by her husband, Oswald (Sparkie) in 1983. Eva is survived by her son, Bill (Beverley) of Vancouver; daughter Linda (Alec) of Cairns, Australia; grandchildren Bradley Sakiyama, Heather (Gordon) Denusik and Brenda (Harry) Tilk; great-granddaughter Lauren Denusik; her sister Wilma Sim, and family. Eva had a lifelong interest in public education, teaching at Read Island, Kersley and Galiano; serving on the Provincial P.T.A. Executive and later the Vancouver School Board (1958-72) and sharing the board of Vancouver Community College. After retiring to Galiano with Sparkie in 1974, Eva was a board member of Lady Minto Hospital, Ganges. The family wishes to thank the staffs of Rideau Manor and Cascade Residence, Eva's homes since 1989. Memorial service will be held at 1:30 p.m. on Wednesday, October 11, at St. Margaret's Church of Scotland, Galiano, Rev. James Erb officiating. In lieu of flowers, donations to B.C. Children's Hospital Foundation, 4480 Oak St., Vancouver, B.C. V6H 3V4 would be appreciated.

PEVERLEY - Garfield of S. Surrey passed away September 11, 2000. Born in Montreal October 16, 1918. Survived by wife Robbin; brother Rea (Veta); grandsons Troy (Heather), Lance (Esther) and Colin (Karen); great-grandchildren Trevor, Ethan and Nicole; daughter-in-law Quita; and grand-daughter Sarah. Predeceased by son Floyd in 1995. Served in the RCAF, 1942-43. With his enthusiasm for the human spirit and talent for talk, Gar was no stranger to coffee shops in White Rock and Parksville. Diverse interests in mechanics, electronics and security followed him in various careers in Montreal, Manitoba, Seattle and Vancouver. From aircraft mechanic to audio equipment distributor to locksmith, Gar worked with a smile and a handshake for anyone with a topic. His memory lives on in the conversations he inspires.

DRICOS - Ruth Marie - April 14/1935 - February 6/2000. A beautiful spirited woman who loved to have fun and never passed up an opportunity to put on her party dress. She was in real estate for many years and managed an apartment block in Vancouver. Ruth spent her last years in extended care in Vancouver. Predeceased by her husband, Christian. Survived by her children Grant (Diane) of Burnaby, Mark (Kelly) of Terrace and Christopher (Barb) of 100 Mile House; grandchildren Charles, James, Elizabeth, Stephan, Alana, Mathew and Mckala. PERRET - Aline Alma (nee Tremblay), demonstrating the inner strength, love and humour that she had shared through 59 years of marriage, 58 years of motherhood and 77 years of being special, Aline passed away peacefully and with dignity on February 29, 2000, surrounded by family. Thoughout a courageous but quiet battle with cancer Aline continued to teach us lessons of kindness, compassion and priorities associated with all aspects of life. SANDILANDS - Joyce (McLaren), born March 6, 1922 in Manchester England, passed away peacefully on February 26, 2000 after a long and courageous struggle with Alzheimers Disease. A much loved wife, mother and grandmother, she will be forever cherished in the memories of her devoted husband of 54 years Tom; her daughters Lynda and Heather and her son Bryan. Joyce was predeceased by her sister Doris and will always be fondly remembered by her three grandchildren Sarah, Drew and Kyle; her brother-in-law Jim Parker and by her many nieces and nephews. Joyce brightened the lives of all who knew her with her generous spirit, her laughter and quick wit and especially with her gift of music both as a performer and teacher of classical piano. Our heartfelt thanks to all the staff, residents and their families of the Fair Haven, Burnaby, for their love and support and for the compassionate care given to Joyce throughout her stay. Thelma was predeceased by her brother Eric and sister Madeline. She will be sadly missed and always loved by her husband Alexander; her son Brian (Georgina); twin daughters Lois McIsaac (Earl) and Lesley Edwards; as well as 4 grandchildren, Sean, Sarah, Haley and Samantha. WILLIAMS - Phyllis Edna passed away peacefully on May 4, 2000 at the age of 84. She was born of missionary parents, Canon A.J. and Edith Williams in Honan, China, April 9, 1916. She is lovingly remembered by her sister Florence (Robert) Svenson, her two brothers Richard (Betty) and James (Frances), 7 nieces and nephews, 16 grandnieces and nephews and a great-grandniece. She was predeceased by her fiancee, John Gates of the P.P.C.L.I., killed in action in Italy in 1944. She, herself, served 4 years in the Canadian Women's Army Corps., demobilizing as a Lieutenant. She was actively involved in her church and community, most recently with Village Crafts, the Oak Bay Harmonaires and with hospital visiting. A memorial service will be held at St. Mary's Anglican Church, 1701 Elgin St., Oak Bay, Friday, May 12 at 3 p.m. Donations in lieu of flowers may be sent to the Primate's World Relief & Development Fund in care of St. Mary's, Oak Bay.
