McLEAN, Muriel Agnes - Wednesday, 27 Jun 2007
It is with deep sadness that the family announces the passing of our mother, grandmother and friend.
Muriel Agnes McLean was born on December 19, 1926 in Calgary, AB. to Sydney and Mary Hopkins - the eldest of three children. The family moved to Burnaby, BC. in 1928. She graduated from high school, attended UBC, a business school and worked for a brokerage firm and CNR.
Muriel met Doug in a bean patch and after a five year courtship, they married on April 14, 1951. As a young couple they moved to Black Diamond, AB. where they farmed. Doug took the city girl to the country and she loved the country life. They returned to BC. shortly after, settling in Newton for a brief period of time, then finally making their home in Aldergrove, BC. in November 1957.
Muriel was devoted to her children and she spent the majority of her time raising the family and tending the farm, often while Doug was away working at remote construction sites. In the mid 70s the focus changed from farming to construction with the formation of Valley Gravel Sales. This allowed the freedom for traveling which she enjoyed immensely. She traveled to Alaska, Yukon, NWT, Germany, Hungary, Scotland and Australia, as well as many US and Canadian destinations on Doug Jackson’s bus trips. Muriel’s other hobbies included knitting (when she was ten, her knitting was exhibited at the PNE) crocheting, needlepoint and watching activities that her children and grandchildren were involved in.
Muriel was a keen participant in naturopathic healing and lifestyle. Carrot Juice was a particular favourite. Mom battled back from four significant challenges to her health, an indication of her determination to live and her courage to pursue non-traditional treatment.
Muriel held strong religious beliefs and was a member of the Hillside Community Church where she had many valued friends.
Muriel is predeceased by her children Donald John and Janice Evelyn, her parents and her husband of 44 years, Douglas Rolston.
Muriel is survived by children Rod (Leona), Norman (Deborah), Anne (Neil), Barry (Monica), Alan (Bonnie), Judy (Allan), Louise (Felix); brother Edward Hopkins and sister Francis Moore; grandchildren Michael, Ryan, Kyle, Danyel, Meagan, Darryl, Justine, Jessica, Erin, Matt, Alex, Amanda, Brandon, Andrew, Natalie, Sarah and Christoph.
The family would like to thank mom’s caregivers Renee, Samantha, Cheryl, Connie, Barb and Jocelyn for their devotion to mom’s care. You all contributed so much to the enhancement of mom’s life in her final years.
A burial service will be held at 10:30 am. on July 4, 2007, at Valley View Memorial Gardens, followed by a memorial service at 1:30 pm. at Hillside Community Church in Aldergrove. In lieu of flowers donations may be made to a children's charity of your choice.
'She has now gone home to be with her Lord Jesus. We will all miss her very much. '
Love you mom.
