Martin, Charles
Charles Stewart Martin passed away on November 21, 2009 in Calgary, AB due to a post-operative stroke at the age of 47 years.
Charles was born on July 20, 1962 in Guatemala City, Guatemala. He received a Bachelor of Arts in Arts and Sciences in Guatemala City and a Home Support Worker Certification Level III in Ottawa, Ontario.
Charles moved from Guatemala to Canada via the United States in 1981. Here he worked in the health care industry as a bellhop to an assistant manager, hospital janitor, care aid, nurse’s aid, counsellor and educator. He also worked as a home support business manager/owner along side his father. In 1998 Charles returned to Guatemala with his father and worked as a counsellor, educator and translator. In 2006 he returned to Canada again and continued in the Home Support industry.
Charles was a member of the Canadian Legion both in Creston, B.C. and Aylmer, QUE. He was also a part of the Doctors Without Boarders Organization and a counsellor/advisor to Community Health Groups in Guatemala, Ontario and British Columbia.
Charles was predeceased by his mother Lily Martin (nee Mendoza) and Uncle Josue Antonio Penagos Y Panagos.
He will be lovingly remembered by his father Robert Ernest Martin, sister Eunice Ardon, aunts Mimi Porras Mendoza, Olga Hidalgo Mendoza and Nydia Renagos Somoya, cousin Carlos Antonio Renagos and numerous nieces and nephews.
A Memorial Service will be held on December 4, 2009 at 11:00 a.m. at the G. F. Oliver Funeral Chapel with Rev. Robin Celiz officiating.

Haswell, Florence
Florence Haswell (nee Guy) passed away on October 25, 2009 in Creston, B.C. at the age of 99 years.
Florence was born in Glasgow, Scotland on October 9, 1910 to parents Samuel and Ada Guy. In 1933 they moved to Moose Jaw, SK where Florence attended school. Florence was a member of Royal Purple.
Florence was predeceased by her husband James Napier Haswell, her parents Samuel and Ada, sisters Lil and Bell and brother Sandy.
She will be lovingly remembered by her only child Richard (Anne) Haswell, two nieces, two nephews as well as numerous grandchildren.
A Tea was held on Sunday November 1, 2009 from 2:00 until 4:00 p.m. at the residence of Anne & Dick Haswell, #8 - 724 Devon St. Creston, B.C.

Cull, Alice
Alice Olivia Cull (nee Pearson) passed away after a lengthy illness on October 16, 2009 at the age of 86 years.
Alice was born on August 28, 1923 in Froude, SK to parents Adele and William Pearson and attended school in New Brunswick. Alice enjoyed her flower garden and bird watching.
Alice was predeceased by her husband Jack Cull and four brothers and sisters.
She will be dearly missed by her sons Robert (Brenna) and Bruce of Creston, grandchildren Daniel of Cranbrook, Montana of Cranbrook, Mark of Kelowna and Michelle of Creston.
A Private Family Celebration of Life Service to be held at a later date.

Kelm, Walter
Walter Kelm passed away peacefully at the Creston Valley Hospital with his daughter Lisa and son-in-law Percy Jr. by his side on October 12, 2009 at the age of 88 years.
Walter was born at Wisenfelde, Poland, on December 27, 1920. In July of 1952, at the age of 31, Walter along with his younger brother Eugene, Immigrated to Canada leaving from port of Bremerhaven, North Germany.
They travelled by ship to Quebec, City and from there boarded a train that continued on to Winnipeg, Manitoba. Their older brother Edmund and his family met them. Soon realizing that work was scarce in those hard times, their brother Edmund drove Walter and Eugene by car to Millet, Alberta to visit with their sister Amanda and her family. Eugene stayed with his sister Amanda and Walter travelled back to Edmonton to find work.
Walter found work immediately and was employed by Russell’s Plaster and Stucco Company. Walter worked many long hours and so did manage to purchase the business and make a reasonable living for himself.
Walter lived at a ‘Board and Room’ housing with Emma & Heinrich Roth. At this point in his life he met Lili Frieda Schlegel the love of his life. Lili was a sister to Emma.
With his business, Walter and Lili would buy houses in need of repair, fix them up for market and resale.
In 1963, Walter drove to Creston to visit with his friend Ed Klingbeil and wife Liana. Ed owned the Empire Motel. Walter and Ed decided to become partners in an enterprise which included buying the Kootenay Hotel from Joe Lipovski. Ed sold the Empire Motel then to Berthold & Elsa Sommerfeld.
Lili, who was working at this time as a cook at the University Hospital in Edmonton, soon left her job and followed Walter in the fall of 1963.
On November 29, 1966 Walter and Lili were married. Lili continued to cook and clean rooms at the Hotel. Walter worked in the lounge-bar for a continued 41 years of his remaining life. From 1963 – 2004.
The couple were blessed by adopting a daughter Lisa Mae in April of 1967. Her birthmother was Rosemarie Remanda. Their daughter was ‘The apple of their eye’.
Many happy hours were spent with family and friends entertaining in their home, pool, boat, Hotel. Walter loved when all the nephews and nieces came down on their summer breaks and stayed with him in Creston.
As Lisa matured she met Percy Primrose Jr. Percy Jr. and Lisa had two great children Joey and Teela and Walter’s life began to change from Dad role to Grandfather role. Walter loved playing and hanging out with his Grandkids and was so happy that his family was so close to him.
Walter and Lili always had to celebrate a special occasion with family and friends. Every Baptism, Confirmation, Graduation, and Birthday’s had a banquet meal.
Walter loved decorating for Christmas he often received many community rewards for his Christmas lights. The tradition will carry on in Walter’s memory.
Walter loved spending time with his family, friends, and employers fishing with George Kusiak, Dave Burr, John Kriz and Jimmy Wieberg, boating, swimming in his pool, playing cut throat with George Kusiak, Willie Raaymakers, Lloyd Anderson, Arnold Petrich, Nello Deguisti, and playing scotch with Berthold Sommerfeld, Arnold Petrich, and Edwin Dreger, gardening, hiking and making Christmas decorations.
Walter had a passion for giving. He was a cheerful giver. Walter was so proud of his community and his Church. Walter had been critically ill numerous times in the last few years but he always seemed to get well again. Walter will always be remembered for his loving devotion to his wife, family, friends, and the warm hospitality to everyone in the community.
Lisa was daddy’s girl and would do anything for him. When Lili passed away in August of 2003 Lisa and her husband Percy Jr. took care of Walter until his final hours.
Walter was predeceased by his father and mother August and Ottilia Kelm, his dear wife Lili on August 27, 2003, three brothers Edmund, Otto and Roman Kelm, six sisters Amanda Wichman, Klara Arndt, Wanda Stobbe, Lote Miller, Lucy Madu and Ella Kelm.
He will be lovingly remembered by his beloved daughter Lisa (Percy Jr.) Primrose of Creston, B.C., two grandchildren Joey and Teela Primrose of Creston, brother Eugene (Nelly) Kelm of Edmonton, two sister-in-laws Ella Kelm of Edmonton and Emma Roth of Creston as well as numerous nieces and nephews.
The Funeral Service was held on Monday October 19, 2009 at 2:00 p.m. at the Redeemer Lutheran Church with Pastor Harry Haberstock officiating. Committal service took place at the Forest Lawn Cemetery in Erickson, B.C. immediately following the service. A luncheon for family and friends was served by the Redeemer Lutheran Church Ladies in the lower Church Hall.
Pall Bearers were Percy Primrose Jr., Joey Primrose, Eugene Kelm, Ron Kelm, Les MacDougall, and Gary Ahlefeld.
Honourary Pall Bearers were George Kusiak, Willie Raaymakers, Ed Klingbeil, Lloyd Anderson, Arnold Petrich, Gary Kelm, Alex Lorentz, Eugene Lorentz and Brendan Stead.

White, Laurence (Larry)
Laurence Paul White passed away due to pneumonia on October 12, 2009 in Columbus, OH at the age of 41 years.
Laurence was born on August 29, 1968 in Kelso, WA to parents Doreen and Peter White. He attended school at the Yaqan Nukiy School, worked at an orange juice factory in Vancouver, B.C., Cominco in Trail and was with “Toys ‘R’ us” in Columbus, OH for a lengthy time. Laurence also helped with preschool and travelled miles throughout the United States drumming at Pow-wows. Some of his favourite pastimes were watching hockey, baseball, basketball and football games. Laurence also enjoyed collectors items.
Laurence was predeceased by his father Peter M. White.
He will be forever remembered by his wife Jennifer Saunders, sons Alex Saunders-White and Jake Smith, mother Doreen, sisters Debbie and Joanne, Georgina ( Bunny), brothers Pierre, Kanim, Izzy, William Castro, step-daughter Janeese Saunders as well as numerous nieces and nephews.
The Funeral Service was held on Tuesday October 20, 2009 at 11:00 a.m. at the Lower Kootenay Band Complex with Mary Richardson officiating. Interment followed the service at the St. Peter’s Cemetery in Creston, B.C.
