Avery, Ruth
Ruth Avery known as The Rose Lady of Creston passed away peacefully on August 14, 2009 at her apartment after several years of battling cancer.
Ruth Arenia Tinkham was born in Ft. Collins, Colorado on July 29, 1910.
The family lived in Ft. Collins until 1914, Herb had left the family for a while to barber in Vulcan but returned to pack up the family to head north.
Herb barbered in Nanton and Vulcan where the family lived for a while.
They arrived up Edmonton way in 1915 and left for the homestead near Green Court because of the war, things were scarce.
The family lived in a small shack which was very crowded with 7 people, the roof leaked and it did nothing but rain.
Her father left for Edmonton to barber, leaving the family to try to clear the land, they had to do so much work in the time frame allowed or they would loose the land, they stuck it out for a few years then had to give it up. The family then moved to Edmonton. Herb had his barber shop also a small beauty salon which Dorothy ran, when she left to get married Ruth took over the shop.
Business was poor due to the depression, Marcelling was out as the new perment waves were in and they couldn’t afford all of the equipment.
Ab came to Edmonton from Medicine Hat, AB and went to Tinkham’s to board, he and Ruth started dating and soon fell in love.
They wanted to get married but couldn’t afford it and Ab couldn’t get a job in Edmonton area, so he had to go to Creston to live and work with his dad, he also sold Watkins. Ab finally got a job with the Farmers Institute selling animal food. Finally they had enough to get married, the wedding was in Edmonton on June 7, 1934. They caught the train and travelled to Creston for a while they lived with Ab’s parents until they found a small shack across from the Auto Camp. They had no running water, so Ruth carried water by the pail, a big old wood stove and not much else, but they were so happy that they were finally together that they didn’t care. Ab built on to the little house, it was still very cozy without any indoor plumbing but it really didn’t matter. Marilyn was born on December 7, 1935, David on March 30, 1939, and Bruce on October 12, 1942.
Ruth was happy, a wife and mother, she still had time for Church activities, Sunday school, Church choir, and UCW woman’s church group. She was always an avid gardener, soon became a good photographer with lots of family photos. After years of renting, they were finally able to start building their own home. They had a lovely view looking over the valley, Ruth was very involved building her home, which she designed. Once the house was finished there was all the landscaping and gardening, it turned out to be a real show place. Once the kids were gone Ruth started painting, she became one of the better artists in the area. There are many lucky people in the valley who own one of her paintings, most are scenes of the local area.
Ruth belonged to the Camera Club, The Artists Guild, she judged flowers at Crawford Bay Fall Fair and the Boswell Flower Show. She was always willing to talk gardening roses or just gardening in general. She and Ab also had a young peoples group that met at their home, usually there was a get away to Fairmont, this group lasted many years. They found time to do extensive travelling. Ab got to see the scenery and Ruth was taking pictures. Ab passed away on May 30, 1995, Mom was very lonely but still kept her gardening and painting senior citizens and visiting with friends. In 2004, due to failing health, we had to move Ruth from her home she loved, to an apartment at Nikkyl Place. She had 3 girls looking after her and with their care Ruth was able to stay in her own place. Our eternal gratitude to Linda, Rose, Emily and also Evelyn, they took fabulous care of her.
Ruth was predeceased by her husband Ab, parents Herb and Hannah Tinkham, brothers Ernest, George and Herb, sister Dorothy, nephews Brian and Allen Avery, John Truscott, niece Marie Smith and a special girl Agnes Rota who was like a daughter to her.

Ruby “Evelyn” Jobe
“A pearl without price”
There is now, and will be forever after, a tremendous void in the hearts of all who were fortunate enough to know Evelyn. She passed away peacefully at the Creston Valley Hospital on the afternoon of July 16 following a brief illness with pancreatic cancer.
Evelyn was born on August 12, 1922, in the New England District, northeast of Birch Hills, SK. She attended the New England country school and moved to Birch Hills for Grade 11. Evelyn later worked as a practical nurse in the Birch Hills Hospital.
During her youth, Evelyn played guitar and piano in a band with her brothers; they played old-time country dances for twenty-five cents per night. On May 31, 1941, Evelyn married Tom Jobe. Evelyn first helped Tom to work his father’s farm, and to operate a gasoline-trucking business. They then worked various farms in the Birch Hills, SK., area, spending some off-seasons in logging camps where Evelyn was the cook. They finally settled on the “Tice” farm west of Birch Hills where they farmed and operated a construction business for which Evelyn maintained all of the accounting. The farm was a focal point for large family gatherings infused by Evelyn’s warmth, humour and unfailing optimism. Evelyn’s community involvement in Birch Hills included tireless fundraising for multiple sclerosis research, convening church rummage sales, supervising costumes for the figure skating club, and playing competitively in the women’s curling league.
In 1968, Evelyn and Tom semi-retired to Creston, BC, where Evelyn was first employed by Rose and Elidio Salvador at the Downtowner Motel.
From approximately 1971-1987, she was a respected caregiver for the residents of the Endicott Centre.
Her compassion, patience, and wit ideally suited her to this role.
In the early years of her retirement, Evelyn was a frequent volunteer with the Creston Food Bank, the Gleaners, Kootenay Emergency Response Planning, and the Anglican Church Women. She was talented in needlepoint, crocheting, knitting, and other crafts. Evelyn was also a “ green thumb “ gardener whose home was always filled with plants, an avid reader of fiction, and a country music enthusiast. Evelyn was a beloved and gifted mentor to many children for whom she provided voluntary childcare. Along with Tom, she will be long appreciated for her care of several foster children, and of several of her nieces and nephews during times of family need. Tom and Evelyn also supported many overseas foster children throughout their lives.
Memories of Evelyn’s unconditional love will always be cherished by her daughter, Shelley, son-in-law Howell, and grand-daughter, Bronwyn, all of Delta, BC. She will also be remembered with great love by her brother, Charles “Bud” Stevenson of Leduc, AB., her sister, Irene Davidson of Edson, AB., and five sisters-in-law.
For her many nieces and nephews, Evelyn will always be remembered as a “favourite auntie”.
Evelyn was pre-deceased this Jan. 7 by Thomas, her steadfast husband of over sixty-seven years, to whom she provided unfailingly devoted care through many illnesses. She was also pre-deceased by her mother, Ida, her father, Rud, her brothers, Harold, Howard, and Douglas, and her sister, Muriel.
Evelyn was a generous, charismatic humanitarian, who constantly sought out ways to help and encourage others, while never seeking credit for herself. She cheered up everyone with her storytelling and humorous remarks. Evelyn was a lady of great dignity, strength, and compassion, who lived a life of exceptional service and love. She will indeed be sorely missed.
